A great many archaeological excavations have been carried out in Trondheim. The excavation of the town libraryΓÇÖs (Folkebibliotek) site revealed foundations of town quarters from as early as the 13th century. In those times the houses of burghers were situated on elongated along the streets. Trading houses were built along the street, and workshops and dwellings at the back of the yard. There was also a church on the site, most likely the one called ΓÇÿOlavskirkenΓÇÖ (the Church of St Olaf), and along the river bank there were piers and places for securing boats.
