The Maigelein were simple and small cups, only about 3 to 5 cm high and usually made of green Waldglas. Optical decoration made with a grooved mould was typical of these cups which were probably meant for drinking wine. Making Maigelein was easy. One could almost say that their manufacture in the 15th-century Germany (e.g. Hesse and the Rhineland) was mass production. Like the Krautstr├╝nke, dozens of Maigelein have been preserved as reliquaries in Germany. Many glasses have also been found by archaeologists, especially in western Germany. They have been recovered in Norway, especially in Bergen, in copious amounts, but in the Baltic area they are few in number.
