In the High Middle Ages some glass vessels were made of lead glass. Lead glass is so called because of the high lead content of the batch. Analyses of elements have revealed that the proportion of lead could rise to as high as two thirds of the metal. Strong colours, such as vivid green and bright yellow, are typical of lead glass. Many different kinds of objects were made of lead glass, including both goblets and beakers. In the northern Baltic area, only a few shards of early lead glass have been preserved e.g. in Koroinen in Turku. So far only a little is known about lead glass objects and their use in Europe.
