Glass was imported to the Baltic from Bohemia and Germany. In addition to Hanseatic merchants, trade was controlled by the Teutonic Order, which owned vineyards by the Rhine, as well as Bohemian glasshouses. To the towns of the Baltic area the Order distributed glass objects (incl. beakers with applied glass threads) from Bohemia, ceramics from Saxony, as well as wine from Moravia and the banks of the river Oder. In western Scandinavia glass vessels were always used much less than in the Mediterranean region. Only small amounts of glass were taken from the eastern parts of Central Europe to the shores of the Atlantic.
