- This is the first of a series of reviews of the IBM PS/2 computer series from
- an actual user. The present review concerns a model 60.
-
- The configuration of the machine being reviewed is a PS/2 M60 with 44Meg HD,
- an IBM 8512 color monitor and an external 5 1/4 floppy drive. There is a 3270
- emulation card inside and it communicates with our mainframe satisfactorily.
-
- The only physical complaints we have is the external floppy disk drive is
- huge, crawling on your hands and knees to make cable connections to the floor
- mounted system unit is a pain, and bless IBM, they moved the power on/off
- switch to the front of the unit, but placed it about the same height as a
- person's knee. If you work at just a little, you can accidently turn of the
- machine with your knee. The system unit robs you of about 8 inches of under
- desk knee room.
-
- We have run all the standard software and have only run across couple of
- things which will not work. Microsoft recommends the use of their
- RAMDRIVE.SYS with WINDOWS. This ramdisk drives the PS/2 crazy. Their is no
- ramdisk driver for DOS 3.3 except an ASM file sent with the Technical
- reference manual. We tried the old DOS 3.2 VDISK.SYS and this works well so
- far.
-
- The public domain program EGAFONTS runs on this graphics adapter, but the full
- screen is not filled. It is though three or four lines are chopped off. The
- problem is actually the number of vertical dots used in the foreign fonts
- which are less than those found in the machine's default font.
-
- We welcome questions or suggested compatability tests.
