KAYPRO 16
11/14/84 Kaypro Corp introduces upgraded personal computer
Solana Beach, Calif. -- Kaypro Corp. unveiled its most powerful
and expensive personal computer to date, the long-awaited Kaypro
16, which company officials expect will retail for $3295.
As it has successfully done with its other inexpensive and
strictly utilitarian machines, Kaypro plans to sell the new
computer bundled with a lavish software package, including a
word-processing program, a financial spread sheet program, and a
data-base management system.
The company said the Kaypro 16 computer, more than a year in
development, is "slightly more powerful" than its other models
and is the first Kaypro machine built to be compatible with those
by IBM.
The company said it already has begun shipping the new machine to
the 1200 stores in its retail network. Kaypro is manufacturing
about 2,000 machines this month, company officials said.
The Kaypro 16 is based on the 8088 processor and features an
internal 10 mega-byte hard disk drive, one DS-DD floppy drive,
9-inch green monitor, MS-DOS, 256k RAM, an IBM style keyboard,
RGB monitor output, and bundled with MicroPro's Word*, Data*,
Calc*, Report*, and MITE. It weighs the same as the Kaypro 10
at near the 30 pound mark and is classed as "transportable."
Analysts expect the machine to compete most closely with the
Compaq Plus, manufactured by Compaq Computer Inc, which retails
for $3995. The Kaypro 16 is "a darn good bargain for the price,"
said Kenneth Lim, an analyst with Dataquest Inc., a market
research firm based in San Jose, Calif.
Still under development is a powerful lap-held computer that will
weigh less than 10 pounds. Like the Kaypro 16, the lap-held
model will be capable of handling IBM 16-bit software.
