  1.  Info on AST's Current EMS 4 driver.                        09/14/88

  3.            AST REMM.SYS (Versions 4.1, 4.2 and  4.3)

  5. The current version of AST's REMM.SYS driver, listed above is
  6. being distributed by AST as a disk upgrade ($10) or for free via
  7. their Bulletin Board System (714)852-1872.

  9. Quarterdeck DOES NOT RECOMMEND using this driver with DESQview.
  10. While we believe the EMS 4.0 driver will eventually be worth
  11. having, the current driver will not give you as much memory in
  12. DESQview windows as the existing EEMS driver and is generally not
  13. as sound.

  15. Since DESQview fully supports the EEMS driver, it's really not a
  16. big deal anyway.  However, if you are using the new driver and
  17. are having trouble, but don't have trouble with the older driver,
  18. don't leave messages telling us.  We know.  TELL AST.

  20. AST will eventually (probably soon) get these "glitches" cleared
  21. up and when they do, we'll post a message here.

  25. REMM 4.2 is better than 4.1, but still not as good as the EEMS
  26. driver.

  28. REMM 4.3 fixes MOST problems and is generally serviceable with
  29. DESQview, BUT... It still does not support the alternate mapping
  30. registers on existing RAMpage cards and Premium 286 machines.
  31. Such support is essential for efficient support of high speed
  32. communications.

  34. And, it still does not pass all of the PC Magazine EMS 4 tests.
  35. It should be used for the RAMpage Plus cards, which being real
  36. EMS 4 hardware, require it,  but we would continue to recommend
  37. the EEMS driver (version 3.3 or 3.5) with DESQview, when running
  38. on boards or machines designed under the EEMS spec, particularly
  39. if you are doing high speed communications.
