Info on AST's Current EMS 4 driver. 09/14/88
AST REMM.SYS (Versions 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3)
The current version of AST's REMM.SYS driver, listed above is
being distributed by AST as a disk upgrade ($10) or for free via
their Bulletin Board System (714)852-1872.
Quarterdeck DOES NOT RECOMMEND using this driver with DESQview.
While we believe the EMS 4.0 driver will eventually be worth
having, the current driver will not give you as much memory in
DESQview windows as the existing EEMS driver and is generally not
as sound.
Since DESQview fully supports the EEMS driver, it's really not a
big deal anyway. However, if you are using the new driver and
are having trouble, but don't have trouble with the older driver,
don't leave messages telling us. We know. TELL AST.
AST will eventually (probably soon) get these "glitches" cleared
up and when they do, we'll post a message here.
*** Update History ***
REMM 4.2 is better than 4.1, but still not as good as the EEMS
driver.
REMM 4.3 fixes MOST problems and is generally serviceable with
DESQview, BUT... It still does not support the alternate mapping
registers on existing RAMpage cards and Premium 286 machines.
Such support is essential for efficient support of high speed
communications.
And, it still does not pass all of the PC Magazine EMS 4 tests.
It should be used for the RAMpage Plus cards, which being real
EMS 4 hardware, require it, but we would continue to recommend
the EEMS driver (version 3.3 or 3.5) with DESQview, when running
on boards or machines designed under the EEMS spec, particularly
if you are doing high speed communications.
