  15.              In a lab far far away in the Great White North...

  17.              Dr.  Lanny  B.  Brilliant  was  completing  his work on the
  18.         creation  of  8  new  elements  not yet included on the periodic
  19.         table.  After  going  over  his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in
  20.         his head...

  22.              Suddenly his future didn't seem so bright...
  23.  
  24.              Lanny  hadn't  researched  his  new elements enough to have
  25.         discovered  they  were  highly unstable.  Before he could react,
  26.         they  were  everywhere.  He  had  nothing  for  the  Nobel Prize
  27.         committee to assess.

  29.              But  there is still hope!  Lanny knows he can stabilize the
  30.         atoms  if he bonds 3 or more atoms of the same element together,
  31.         forming a molecule chain.

  36.         Tubes: The Game

  39.              The  object of Tubes is to keep the large beaker as free of
  40.         atoms  as  is  possible.  This is accomplished by lining up 3 or
  41.         more like coloured atoms in a row,  vertically, horizontally, or
  42.         diagonally.  Use  the  test  tube you control to catch the atoms
  43.         falling  from the dispenser tubes and place them into the beaker
  44.         at  your  discretion.  The  game  is  over  when  you've dropped
  45.         enough  atoms  to  exceed the drop limit,  or when you've filled
  46.         up the beaker with atoms.

  49.         Minimum System Requirements

  52.              Tubes will check to ensure your system meets the minimum
  53.         requirements, however, here they are:
  54.  
  55.         - At least a 286 processor.  A 386, 486, or Pentium is fine.
  56.         - 420K of free conventional memory is the minimum.  Sound
  57.           will require an additional 65K and Music will require 25K.
  58.           Total memory requirements are 510K.
  59.         - A VGA card with at least 256K.  Super VGA cards are also fine.

  61.              Tubes also supports the following hardware:

  75.              At this point you might as well run Tubes by typing "TUBES"
  76.         at the DOS prompt.

  80.              Tubes will run the SetUp program so you may configure Tubes
  81.         for your system.

  87.         Setting Up Tubes
  88.         ════════════════

  90.              Once  you  have  configured the game, you won't have to run
  91.         the  setup  program again, unless you wish to change any of your
  92.         previous device choices.

  94.              Sound Effects:
  95.  
  96.              Sound  Blaster is the best selection for the sound effects,
  97.         and  will  enable  you  to  hear  the  outstanding digital sound
  98.         effects throughout the game.  If you do not have a Sound Blaster
  99.         card,  the  PC  Speaker can also play the digital sound effects.
  100.         This  method is very processor intensive and will require a very
  101.         fast computer,  at least  a 386 running at 25mhz.  There are two
  102.         quality modes.  "Good as it gets" will sound the best.  If Tubes
  103.         plays very badly, your computer probably can't keep up.  Try the
  104.         "Okay"  setting,  if  Tubes is still unplayable, then select "No
  105.         Sound."  This method will sound really bad if your computer does
  106.         not  use  a normal speaker (cone).  Notebooks and Laptops are an
  107.         example of this.

  109.              Music:

  111.              Only  FM  music  is available.  Those with Adlib compatible
  112.         cards  such as the Sound Blaster and it's many clones will allow
  113.         you to hear the fantastic sound track that accompanies the game.
  114.         There is no music available to users with no sound card.

  116.              Input:

  118.              The  recommended  input  method  is the joystick,  although
  119.         some may  prefer  the  keyboard.   The  mouse  is  provided  for
  120.         completeness, however it is not ideal for  this  type  of  game.
  121.         The  default  Keys  for  the  Keyboard  are the cursors keys for
  122.         movement,  CTRL  for  Button  A,  and  ALT for Button B.  Select
  123.         Keyboard to redefine your keys if you prefer.

  126.         Main Menu

  129.              You  can  move  around  the  menus  with your input device.
  130.         Button  A  selects the highlighted option,  and Button B returns
  131.         to the previous menu.

  133.              Start Game:

  135.              Starts  the  game  of  Tubes.  After selecting this option,
  136.         you  are  then  asked  to choose between Wave and Endurance mode
  137.         which   are  the  two  styles  of  game  play  in  Tubes.  After
  138.         selecting  the  mode  of  play,  you  must choose the difficulty
  139.         level  -  101  is the easiest,  for beginning players because it
  140.         allows 9 drops, 201 allows  6  drops,  and 301 is for the expert
  141.         player  who  is  only  allowed 3 drops.  Atom speed and the rate
  142.         that they appear is also determined by the difficulty setting.

  144.              Continue Saved Game:

  146.              Starts a previously saved game from where you left off.

  148.              Preview Registered:

  150.              Lets  you  play five waves of the deluxe registered version
  151.         featuring the extremely helpful ANTI-MATTER and BONUS atoms..

  155.              Opens  another  menu  which  includes the options of Toggle
  156.         Sound and/or Music, and Define Input Device.

  186.              Tubes should always be played from DOS.  Tubes will  detect
  187.         a  multitasking environment when it starts up and will recommend
  188.         you run from DOS but it won't stop you.  The game will  give  up
  189.         time slices but it's recommended if  you  must  run  Tubes  from
  190.         Windows that you don't run anything else at the same time.

  192.              Windows and the digital PC SoundFX  option  should  not  be
  193.         used together.  Tubes should work, but will be unplayable during
  194.         a sound effect.

  197.         Hints 'n' Tips

  200.              Playing Endurance mode is a great way to learn how to  play
  201.         Tubes for the first time.
  202.  
  203.              Hoard  Flashium  atoms  in  the test tube until they can be
  204.         used  most  effectively,  these are valuable atoms and shouldn't
  205.         be wasted.
  206.  
  207.              Use  Anti-Matter  atoms  to destroy troublesome Xenon atoms
  208.         that accumulate in the beaker.
  209.  
  210.              Try  to  create  a  4 or 5 atom chain when possible,  since
  211.         they  count  as  2  and  3  chains respectively,  and double the
  212.         points.

  230.              Tubes generates three error messages:

  232.              "Run SETUP.EXE to configure Tubes for your System"

  234.              Tubes  hasn't  been  setup  for  your  system.   Normally,
  235.          Tubes will run the SetUp program  for  you,  if  it  can't  do
  236.          that  it  displays  this  message.   The  solution is  to  run
  237.          SETUP.EXE yourself then run TUBES.EXE again.

  240.              "Tubes requires <some number> bytes  of  free  memory  with
  241.          this SetUp!"
  242.  
  243.              Tubes checks how much free  conventional  memory  you  have
  244.          when it first runs.  If you  don't  have  enough  Tubes  aborts
  245.          with this message.  The solution is  to  free  up  more  memory
  246.          or lower Tubes' memory requirements, for  example,  turn  sound
  247.          and/or music off.

  250.              "<Where ever it occurs> Resource Error!"

  252.              It could mean many things, but 99% of  the  time  it  means
  253.         there wasn't enough memory to  load  something  Tubes  requires.
  254.         Although rare, it is still  possible  to  get  this  error  even
  255.         though Tubes checks  to  ensure  you  have  enough  memory  when
  256.         it first runs.  The solution is to free up more memory or  lower
  257.         Tubes' memory  requirements,  for  example,  turn  sound  and/or
  258.         music off.

  264.              Tubes  is copyrighted software,  however you are encouraged
  265.         to  copy  and freely distribute the Shareware version as long as
  266.         all files are included.  Shareware allows you to  "try it before
  267.         you buy it".

  269.              Why  register?  Besides  getting  an  incredible registered
  270.         version of Tubes,  registration will ensure future games will be
  271.         released   and   with  the  same  high  quality.  You  are  also
  272.         supporting  the  entire Shareware concept,  without which,  many
  273.         excellent  programs  would  not  be available.   Neither Impulse
  274.         Software  nor  Absolute Magic receive a penny when  you purchase
  275.         a disk with Tubes from a Shareware Library,  or download it from
  276.         a commercial information service,  such as CompuServe, or from a

  294.              Tubes was written in Borland Pascal  v7.  It   consists  of
  295.         approximately  15,000  lines  of  Pascal   code   and   compiles
  296.         completely in under 20 seconds.

  298.             Tubes uses a planar Mode 13h commonly referred to as Mode X,
  299.         all graphic routines were written with the  built  in  assembler
  300.         present in  Borland  Pascal.   I  experienced  great  difficulty
  301.         debugging the VGA graphics with planar modes being  undocumented
  302.         so I created a utility called UNCHAIN  that  fixed  the  problem
  303.         along with  other  VGA  related  problems  such  as  losing  the
  304.         palette.  It's free so if you also have problems, it's out there
  305.         somewhere.

  307.              All of the drivers  (Music, Sound FX, Input)  were  created
  308.         in Turbo Assembler's IDEAL  mode  and  are  loaded  at  run-time
  309.         as need.
