  60.       Many years ago as a filmmaker I developed an interest
  61.       in interactive technologies.  As I began to work with
  62.       them, I realized that they had great potential for
  63.       opening up new kinds of learning experiences for young
  64.       people.  They offered an alternative to some of the
  65.       traditional approaches to education that did not work
  66.       for me as a youth.  As a result, for over 15 years
  67.       I've been committed to finding ways to capture kids'
  68.       natural interest in learning and engage them more
  69.       actively and productively in the learning process.

  77.    B) Minimum System Requirements
  78.  
  79.       The minimum system requirements for Pit Droids on your
  80.       Windows 95 or 98 system are as follows:
  81.  
  82.       COMPUTER: 100% Windows 95 or 98 DirectX compatible
  83.       computer required.
  84.  
  85.       CPU: Pentium class 166MHz or faster processor
  86.       required.
  87.  
  88.       MEMORY: 32MB RAM minimum required.
  89.  
  90.       GRAPHICS CARD: 100% DirectX compatible PCI or AGP
  91.       graphics card required.
  92.  
  93.       SOUND CARD: 100% DirectX compatible 16-bit sound card
  94.       required.

  96.       INPUT DEVICES: 100% Windows 95/98 compatible mouse and
  97.       keyboard required.

  99.       DIRECTX: Microsoft DirectX 6.1 is available for download
  100.       at the Microsoft website and must be installed to play the
  101.       Pit Droids Demo.  See section 1-C ('DirectX 6.1') in this
  102.       ReadMe file for more information.

  104.          NOTE: Your system may require the "latest" Windows
  105.          95/98 drivers for your particular hardware.
  106.  
  107.       HARD DISK SPACE: Demo installation requires 21 MB free
  108.       hard disk space.  It is recommend that you have at
  109.       least 50 MB free space available after installing the
  110.       game for the Windows swap file.
  111.  
  112.    C) DirectX 6.1
  113.  
  114.       DirectX 6.1 must be properly installed on your system to
  115.       play the Pit Droids Demo. It is available for download at
  116.       the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/directx.
  117.       Select the DirectX Downloads link and follow the on-screen
  118.       prompts to download DirectX 6.1. This page also provides
  119.       instructions for DirectX installation. Microsoft DirectX
  120.       is an application that allows Pit Droids to have instant
  121.       access to your system hardware in the Windows environment.
  122.       For more information about DirectX, please consult 'DirectX
  123.       Setup' (Section 5) of the Pit Droids Demo Troubleshooting
  124.       Guide.

  126.       To access the Pit Droids Demo Troubleshooting Guide after
  127.       installing the demo, follow these steps:
  128.  
  129.          1. Click START on the Windows task bar.
  130.  
  131.          2. Select PROGRAMS.
  132.  
  133.          3. Select LUCAS LEARNING.
  134.  
  135.          4. Select STAR WARS PIT DROIDS DEMO.
  136.  
  137.          5. Select READ PIT DROIDS TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE.

  139.    D) Laptop Systems
  140.  
  141.       While Pit Droids should work fine on most systems
  142.       that meet the minimum hardware specifications, it has
  143.       not been tested with laptop systems and therefore we
  144.       cannot guarantee compatibility.
  145.  
  146.       Due to the wide variety of hardware configurations that
  147.       ship with today's laptop systems, it would be impossible
  148.       to configure a game that would work with all of them.
  149.       Many laptops are limited in their ability to be used as a
  150.       gaming machine because of memory configurations, their
  151.       microchannel architecture, port configurations (i.e. no
  152.       place for a joystick) and sound systems that are primarily
  153.       designed to be used with productivity software.
  154.  
  155.       Laptop systems will also attempt to compress the
  156.       traditional version of the standard 101-function keyboard
  157.       (found on almost all desktop systems) into a much smaller
  158.       key configuration.  This is usually done by relying on
  159.       multi-function keys that allow the user to assign different
  160.       functions to the same key.  Unfortunately, this has been
  161.       known to cause problems with our games.
  162.  
  163.    E) OEM Features on Brand Name Machines
  164.  
  165.       Many brand name computers come with a variety of features
  166.       provided by the manufacturer, including special buttons on
  167.       the keyboard or special functions assigned to buttons
  168.       common to all keyboards.  In general, we recommend that you
  169.       do not use the special buttons or special functions assigned
  170.       to buttons that your machine came with while playing Pit
  171.       Droids.  Contact the manufacturer of your computer for
  172.       more information.
  173.  
  174.    F) Task Switching (or ALT-TAB)
  175.       
  176.       We do not recommend using the Windows task switching
  177.       (ALT-TAB) function with Pit Droids.  If you need to access
  178.       another program on your computer while running the game, we
  179.       recommend that you first quit out of Pit Droids.
  180.       
  181.    G) Game Crash Issues
  182.  
  183.       If the game unexpectedly freezes up, returns you to your
  184.       desktop, or if you experience any other severe problems,
  185.       you should try to properly exit Windows and reboot your
  186.       computer.  (As a rule, you should never turn off your
  187.       computer while the hard drive is active.)  This will help
  188.       to prevent possible problems related to the error that
  189.       you have experienced.
  190.  
  191.       If you end up at a black screen or the screen appears
  192.       frozen, please press ESC, SPACE BAR, or ENTER before
  193.       trying anything else.
  194.  
  195.       If your screen remains black for an extended period of
  196.       time, restart your computer.
  197.  
  198.    H) Internet Explorer 4.0 Active Desktop
  199.  
  200.       If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0, we recommend that
  201.       you disable Active Desktop before playing Pit Droids.
  202.       Active Desktop uses memory and resources that the game
  203.       may need.
  204.  
  205. 2) PLAYING THE STAR WARS PIT DROIDS DEMO
  206.  
  207.    A) Disabled Modes of Play
  208.  
  209.       In the full version of Pit Droids, you may choose
  210.       between several modes of gameplay.  For the purposes
  211.       of this demo, however, all modes of play except
  212.       Puzzle Chooser are disabled.
  213.  
  214.    B) Puzzle Chooser
  215.  
  216.       Puzzle Chooser allows you to play Pit Droids puzzles
  217.       one at a time. In the full version of Pit Droids,
  218.       you can even play custom-made puzzles you receive
  219.       from friends and new puzzles you download from the
  220.       Internet.
  221.  
  222.       To enter Puzzle Chooser, scroll to the right in the
  223.       Main Menu and click on PUZZLE CHOOSER.  Here you
  224.       may select a specific puzzle* to play.
  225.  
  226.          * NOTE: Most puzzles, including those that are
  227.            randomly selected by the program for you, are
  228.            only available in the full version of Pit
  229.            Droids.

  231.    C) Getting Help in the Game
  232.  
  233.       Should you get stuck while playing the Pit Droids Demo,
  234.       help is always available:

  236.       1) R2-D2
  237.  
  238.          a) Overview
  239.  
  240.             R2-D2 is available to help you whenever you see
  241.             his icon on the game screen.  To get help from
  242.             R2-D2, click on his icon.  This will cause your
  243.             mouse cursor to change to an image of R2-D2.  Point
  244.             this cursor at anything on the game screen, and
  245.             R2-D2 will display information about the item.
  246.             Click anywhere to turn R2-D2 off.
  247.  
  248.          b) Obtaining R2-D2 Help About Tiles
  249.  
  250.             To obtain help from R2-D2 about a specific tile in
  251.             the game, hold the R2-D2 Help cursor over the base
  252.             of the tile.

  254.    E) Pausing the Game
  255.  
  256.       Click on the PAUSE button at the bottom center of the
  257.       game screen, or press the SPACE BAR on your keyboard to
  258.       pause the movement of the pit droids during gameplay.
  259.       Click the PAUSE button or press the SPACE BAR again to
  260.       unpause the pit droids.
