  26. NEW FEATURES 
  27.  
  28. 1.  VirusScan's powerful new user interface provides 
  29.     advanced scan configuration settings and a complete
  30.     Tools menu. From the Tools menu, users can: Password 
  31.     protect scan tasks, gain access to the McAfee Virus 
  32.     List, and start the VirusScan Console. The Tools menu
  33.     is conveniently located in VirusScan's main window.     
  34.  
  35. 2.  The VirusScan Console is an intuitive addition to
  36.     VirusScan for Windows 95. The VirusScan Console
  37.     facilitates easy and efficient scheduling and 
  38.     configuring of scan tasks. 
  39.  
  40. 3.  VirusScan now offers configuration lockdown for 
  41.     both the on-demand scanner and VShield, the on-access
  42.     scanner, through password protection. 
  43.  
  44.     Users or administrators can now password protect scan
  45.     settings to prevent unintentional changes being made.
  46.  
  47. 4.  ScreenScan is now compatible with 3-D screen savers 
  48.     in Windows 95 OSR2. 
  49.  
  50. 5.  Increased file compression scanning capabilities.
  51.     VirusScan now scans files compressed with PKLITE,
  52.     LZEXE, and LHA compression software.

  54. 6.  VShield is now compatible with Microsoft's 'FindFast' 
  55.     Fast File Indexer that comes with MS Office. Now, while 
  56.     FindFast indexes your files for faster access, VShield 
  57.     will check them for macro viruses. Now you can have fast,
  58.     safe access to all your documents.

  451. ISSUES ADDRESSED IN THIS RELEASE
  452.  
  453. 1.  Issues surrounding the removal of LAROUX.A and LAROUX.E 
  454.     Excel macro viruses have been resolved.  
  455.  
  456. ____________
  457. KNOWN ISSUES
  458.  
  459. 1.  The new 3000 series DATs contained in VirusScan v3.1.1
  460.     are not backward compatible with the VirusScan v2.x
  461.     series. The 3000 series DATs should not be used with
  462.     VirusScan v2.x products.
  463.  
  464. 2.  Windows 95 no longer requires MS-DOS memory managers.
  465.     Using MS-DOS memory managers may cause VirusScan for
  466.     Windows 95 to falsely detect viruses in memory. To
  467.     eliminate false warnings, remark (Rem) the memory 
  468.     manager lines from your CONFIG.SYS to deactivate them.
  469.  
  470. 3.  ScreenScan's log file has a maximum size of 100KB. If
  471.     the file reaches this size, the oldest data will be
  472.     deleted. To retain logging data, you should edit the
  473.     content to keep the log file under 100K or save the
  474.     oldest data to another file.
  475.  
  476. 4.  ScreenScan will stop scanning after it detects a 
  477.     virus and prompt you to launch VirusScan. If you have
  478.     additional viruses on your system, ScreenScan will not
  479.     notify you until the next time it activates. McAfee
  480.     recommends that you scan and clean your entire system
  481.     with VirusScan whenever ScreenScan detects a virus.
  482.  
  483. 5.  After uninstalling ScreenScan, the screen saver will
  484.     be set to None. You can reactivate your screen saver
  485.     from the Display Properties.
  486.  
  487. 6.  If using CTRL+ALT+DEL to shut down a Windows 95 system
  488.     when VShield or any other VxD is enabled, Windows will
  489.     not shut down. However, VShield or the VxD will be
  490.     disabled. Windows will not shut down unless the shut
  491.     down process is repeated. This is a known issue with
  492.     Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system.   
  493.  
  494. 7.  When creating an Emergency Disk, you must close all 
  495.     open windows to the floppy drives. The Emergency Disk
  496.     creation utility must have exclusive access to the 
  497.     floppy or the system file transfer may fail, making
  498.     the disk non-bootable.    
  499.  
  500. 8.  If password protection is set for VShield or any
  501.     scan task, when an associated program is launched, you 
  502.     will be prompted to verify the password. You must use 
  503.     the mouse to click in the text field to enter the 
  504.     password, or click on Cancel to exit. Keyboard strokes
  505.     are not functional. This is a Microsoft issue as stated 
  506.     in Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article ID #Q84133.
  507.  
  508. 9.  The Status properties page for VShield Properties can
  509.     only be updated by closing and reopening VShield's Task
  510.     Properties window.
  511.  
  512. 10. If an .LZH file is infected with the Concept macro
  513.     virus, you must first decompress the file to delete
  514.     the virus.
  515.  
  516. 11. The VShield component of VirusScan 3.1.0 and v3.1.1
  517.     contains significant enhancements over the VShield 
  518.     component of VirusScan 3.0.0. Because of these extensive
  519.     modifications to the product, McAfee strongly recom-
  520.     mends you reboot your system after installing the new
  521.     version of VirusScan. You will not be protected by
  522.     VShield until you reboot.
  523.  
  524. 12. When running two or more instances of Scan32.EXE and two or 
  525.     more LHA compressed archives are scanned simultaneously,
  526.     Scan32.EXE will terminate with a page fault.
  527.  
  528. 13. Scan32.EXE is not fully compatible with FAT32 boot sectors.
  529.  
  530. 14. When an infected file is unzipped directly to a Novell 
  531.     server, VShield will not detect the infection as the file
  532.     is created. For maximum security, use VirusScan to scan
  533.     the Novell server after the files have been unzipped to 
  534.     the server.
  535.  
  536. 15. Because disk defragmentation programs move files around as
  537.     they maximize disk efficiency, applications running during 
  538.     a disk defragmenting program session may return an error 
  539.     message stating files cannot be found. 
  540.  
  541. ____________
  542. INSTALLATION         
  543.  
  544. * INSTALLING THE PRODUCT *
  545.  
  546. 1.  Do one of the following:
  547.     
  548.     - If installing from diskette or compact disc, insert it 
  549.       into your floppy disk drive or CD-ROM drive.
  550.  
  551.     - If installing from files downloaded from a BBS or the 
  552.       McAfee Web Site, decompress the zipped files into a 
  553.       directory on the network or your local drive.
  554.  
  555. 2   Select Run from the Start menu.
  556.  
  557. 3.  If installing from diskette, type x:\setup.exe where x 
  558.     is the drive in which you placed the diskette. Click OK.
  559.  
  560.     If installing from compact disc, type x:\win95\setup.exe
  561.     where x is the drive in which you placed the CD-ROM. 
  562.     Click OK.
  563.  
  564.     If installing from downloaded files, type 
  565.     x:\path\setup.exe  where x:\path is the location of the
  566.     files (for example, C:\DOWNLOAD\SETUP.EXE). Click OK.
  567.  
  568.     Response: The Welcome screen is displayed. Click Next to 
  569.     continue.
  570.  
  571. 4.  Follow the on-screen installation instructions to 
  572.     complete VirusScan installation.
  573.  
  574. 5.  When installation is complete, reboot your system
  575.     for the changes to take effect. 
  576.  
  577.  
  578. * PERFORMING A SILENT INSTALLATION *
  579.  
  580. If you would like to perform a "silent" installation
  581. of VirusScan, requiring minimal user interaction and
  582. using all default or "Typical" installation settings,
  583. add -s (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s) to the setup command when
  584. you install the product.
  585.  
  586. Network Administrators can customize the silent
  587. installation feature by following the steps outlined
  588. below.
  589.  
  590. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a
  591.     file named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it
  592.     does, rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  593.  
  594. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, (i.e. SETUP.EXE -r).
  595.  
  596. 3.  Select the components you would like to be installed
  597.     during the silent installation.  All responses will
  598.     be recorded.
  599.  
  600. 4.  Finish the installation, and locate the file SETUP.ISS
  601.     in the Windows directory.
  602.  
  603.     Note: You can modify this file to allow the instal-
  604.           lation to copy the VirusScan files to the drive
  605.           where the operating system resides instead of 
  606.           defaulting to the C: drive by following the 
  607.           instructions below:
  608.           
  609.           Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the 
  610.           SETUP.ISS file and go to the line: Result=x
  611.  
  612.           where x is equal to:
  613.           301 (Typical installation)
  614.           302 (Compact installation)
  615.           303 (Custom installation)
  616.  
  617.           Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result
  618.           variable is equal to 401, 402, or 403. 
  619.  
  620. 7.  Copy the installation files onto a local or mapped
  621.     drive, then rename, back up, or delete the SETUP.ISS
  622.     file.
  623.  
  624.     Note: A silent install cannot be performed from
  625.           multiple media as the silent operation will be
  626.           comprimised when the install prompts the user
  627.           for more media. 
  628.  
  629. 8.  Copy the new SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory
  630.     to the location of the installation files.
  631.  
  632. 9.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -s switch (i.e. SETUP.EXE -s).
  633.  
  634.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer for
  635.     all dialog boxes during the initial installation, the
  636.     silent installation will fail. Also, the file used
  637.     for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not work
  638.     properly across different operating systems. For
  639.     example, if the silent install is generated for
  640.     Windows 95, it may not work properly in Windows 3.1x
  641.     or Windows NT.
  642.  
  643. 10. When the silent installation is complete, the machine 
  644.     will reboot automatically.
  645.  
  646.

  827. effort by anti-virus vendors throughout the world to 
  828. come up with one standard by which customers can verify 
  829. their anti-virus installations. To test your 
  830. installation, copy the following line into its own 
  831. file and name it EICAR.COM.

  851. MANUALLY UNINSTALLING THE PRODUCT

  853. McAfee recommends using VirusScan's uninstall program
  854. provided. You can access the uninstaller from the Start menu
  855. in Programs/McAfee VirusScan. If, however, UNINSTALLER.EXE
  856. is not present on your system, follow the instructions
  857. outlined below to manually uninstall VirusScan: 
  858.  
  859. 1.  Remove VirusScan from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
  860.  
  861.     1.  Go to the System Configuration Editor window by
  862.         typing SYSEDIT in the Start/Run dialog box and press
  863.         Enter.
  864.     2.  In the first file, the AUTOEXEC.BAT, delete the
  865.         VirusScan entry and the @IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE line
  866.         if present.
  867.     3.  Save the changes and close the Configuration Editor 
  868.         window.

  871. 2.  Remove VirusScan icons:

  873.     The VirusScan icons can be removed from the Taskbar 
  874.     properties page in Start/Settings/Taskbar. Follow the

  977. A:  If you have configured a scheduled scan and it does
  978.     not take place on schedule, it is likely that you did not
  979.     have the VirusScan Console open when the scan was to take
  980.     place. The VirusScan Console must be open (it may be 
  981.     minimized) in order for the scan to take place.

  984. Q:  VirusScan detected a virus on my system, but it is not
  985.     a document, spreadsheet, or executable file (.EXE, .COM,
  986.     .DO?, .XL?). Therefore, I suspect it may be a false 
  987.     detection. What can I do to verify a detected virus?

  989. A:  If you suspect a false detection on a non-executable 
  990.     file, run VirusScan's command line scanner, SCAN.EXE, 
  991.     to verify an infection. If VirusScan for Windows95

  994.     files and scan your system again. If VirusScan still

  1008.     Windows 95, the McAfee electronic Wizard will prompt

  1014.     Internet to download your order via the Internet.

  1033.     my emergency disk's performance?

  1035. A:  To enable your own Emergency Disk, you must create a

  1037.     following lines:

  1058. A:  You need to customize your options. Take these
  1059.     steps:
  1060.  
  1061.     1.  Navigate to the location of the saved .VSC file.
  1062.     2.  Right-click on the .VSC file to reveal the 
  1063.         Context Menu.
  1064.     3.  From the Context Menu, select Properties.  
  1065.     4.  Select the Options Tab on the property sheet. 
  1066.     5.  Check the Start Automatically box.

  1068.     By enabling this option, scanning will begin 
  1069.     automatically. If viruses are not detected VirusScan
  1070.     for Windows 95 will automatically close and free up

  1111.     1.  At the Detections property page, click Add.
