  4. BAND.EXE is the name of the program
  5. The Standard Edition consists of the program with 24 styles
  6.         and 24 demo chord progressions named after each style.
  7. The Professional Edition has an additional 50+ styles (total 75+).

  18. (  BB.EXE is a different program and is the MIDI version of Band-in-a-Box
  19.   If you have a MIDI system (MPU 401 ) you should use the BB.EXE program
  20.   and not the BAND.EXE .  )

  22. This is the help file for the SoundBlaster/AdLib version of
  23. Band-in-a-Box . ( It is an ASCII file called BANDHELP.BB )
  24.  
  25. To use the program you require a SoundBlaster/AdLib or compatible
  26. card.
  27. The Band-in-a-Box program is an automatic musical accompaniment
  28. program, providing professional quality accompaniment of 3 instruments-
  29. bass,drums and piano. This means that you have a built in jazz/rock
  30. combo inside your PC , willing to play any song in any style , in any
  31. key at any tempo - willing to "back you up" for hours with no complaints !
  32.  
  33. You just type in the chords to any song , using standard chord symbols
  34. such as C or Fm7 or C13b9#11/Bb . The screen is pre-divided into beats
  35. and bars. You may enter 4 chords per bar ( 1 per note ) .
  36. You then pick a style from among 24 built in styles (jazz/pop etc. )
  37. or pick a user style from disk ( files ending in .STY ).
  38. After specifying a few things like tempo/ song title / looping points
  39. for the song you press play <F4 key>. The program automatically
  40. generates an arrangement of your chords in your style .

  42. Songs are saved to disk as .SG? files . These are tiny files less than
  43. 1 K , so you can get literally thousands of your songs onto your hard disk.

  45. There's lots you can do as the song is playing :
  46.  
  47.   - pressing F1 during playback provides a help screen listing all functions
  48.     available during playback .

  51.   - playalong melody using "intelligent playalong" feature

  57.         Using the bottom 2 rows of the keyboard - play along
  58.         with the song - don't worry - you can't hit any wrong notes !
  59.         The intelligence of the program makes sure that what you play
  60.         sounds good !

  62.         There are a few different modes of the intelligent playalong .
  63.      F2 Scale ( non intelligent )
  64.      F3 Intelligent Soloing mode ( Pop/Jazz/Country)
  65.          When playing along in intelligent Soloing mode use either the
  66.          bottom row (chord tones ) or the top row (extensions like 9th 11th)
  67.      F4 Rock scale soloing
  68.       You can change playalong modes during playback. The program
  69.       defaults to mode F3 - the intelligent soloing mode .
  70.       Some of the rock styles default to the F4 Rock scale though .

  85. You may use the Band-in-a-Box manual provided with the program.
  86. This manual was written for the MIDI version of the program. So you
  87. get to ignore all of the info concerning setting up the program to
  88. work with synthesizers/MIDI - because the BAND.EXE works automatically
  89. with the SoundBlaster and you don't need MIDI or Synthesizers for this
  90. version .
  91.   All you do is :
  92.   ( if you have a hard drive )
  93.     1. Make a new subdirectory on your hard disk called bb
  94.           C: md\bb
  95.     1. copy all files to hard drive
  96.          Copy  *.*  c:\bb
  97.     2. run the program by typing   Band  <ENTER>
  98.     3. Move around the screen with cursor keys
  99.     4. Use the pull down menus by holding down the ALT key and the
  100.        first letter of the Pull down menu .

  102.     5. Type in chords to any song
  103.           The #s on the screen on bar #s . PageUp/Down to change pages
  104.           The highlighted cell is where your chords will go. It moves
  105.           2 notes at a time . You may enter 2 chords per cell which
  106.           means that you cab enter 4 chords per bar .

  113.            To get 2 chords in
  114.           a cell - use a comma  ie  Cm7,F7

  116.            To blank a cell use the <SPACEBAR>

  122.     6. TAB key gets you to settings at top of screen.
  123.           You can set info like title/tempo/looping points/Key from here
  124.     7. Select a style from the Pull Down menus or select a user style
  125.        from the F9 key .
  126.     8. Play your song by pressing the F4 Key
  127.     9. Playalong with the song using intelligent playalong of melody
  128.        or drums  (see above )
  129.     10.There is a number of demo chord progressions that come with
  130.        the program- one for each style. It is a good idea to load in these
  131.        songs (using F3 key ) and Play them (using F4 key) to get an idea
  132.        of what each style sounds like.
  133.        The demo songs are conveniantly titled by the style that they are
  134.        in  ie SALSA.SGU is a song in Salsa Style .
  135.        Songs have the extension .SG? where the ? is the style # of the
  136.        song with 1-9 and a-o being the 24 built in styles and
  137.        .SGU are songs saved with a user created style .

  139.          eg.  MySong.SG1   saved as style #1 = Jazz Swing
  140.               MySong.SGA   saved as style#10 = Shuffle Rock
  141.               MySong.SGU  saved with a User Style

  143.        User created styles are saved with extensions of .STY
  144.          ex  AFRICAN.STY is a User created style called AFRICAN
  145.  
  146.       11.Create a Standard MIDI file by <F6> key
  147.            You would do this if you have a sequencer program and want
  148.            to Edit the music produced by Band-in-a-Box . Make sure
  149.            that your sequencer is current enough to read in Standard
  150.            Midi Files which end with .MID extension .

  152.       12.Blank the worksheet by <ALT> B or pull down menu EDIT Blank
  153.       13.<F10> to quit  .

  157. The Professional Edition of the program comes with an additional
  158. 51+ styles - all 51+ may be edited (SoundBlaster users can
  159. only edit the drums- MIDI version can edit bass and piano too )
  160. The editable styles are called "User Defined Styles" and are named
  161. with extension .STY 22 of the styles are User Defined Style
  162. versions of the Built in styles - they are
  163. identified by  naming beginning with Z
  164.  
  165. ie. Z_JAZZSW.STY is User Defined Style version of the built in
  166. style Jazz Swing . Note that these Z styles are similar but
  167. not identical to the built in ones - just made with the same
  168. style in mind . The other 30+ styles on the Professional Edition
  169. are brand new styles eg. AFRICAN.STY would be African User Defined
  170. Style.

  174. SECTION 2
  175. INTRODUCTION TO THE PROGRAM
  176.  
  177.       Band-In-A-Box (version 4) is a MIDI program for IBM compatible
  178.       computers with an SoundBlaster compatible card or MIDI MPU401
  179.       interface . The program
  180.       provides automatic accompaniment of bass,piano chording, and
  181.       drum parts in a wide variety of popular styles of music
  182.       (total of 24 including Jazz swing ,Rock ,Country, Ethnic and more ).

  184.       This program was designed and programmed by a musician.The concept
  185.       is to provide the fastest means possible to provide a complete
  186.       piano,bass and drum accompaniment to any song .
  187.       To play a song all the program requires is :
  188.            - the chords of the song ( as typed in by the user onto
  189.                  the screen using standard chord symbols-eg:C13b9 )
  190.        and - the form of the song (ie. the looping points for the chorus
  191.              to begin and end , number of choruses to play , tag ending)
  192.        and - part markers placed throughout the song to indicate new
  193.              parts and locations for drum fills.
  194.        and - the desired style (chosen by the user from a menu of
  195.                  24 available styles )

  197.       A typical song may be entered in about 2 minutes . This
  198.       allows the user to quickly build up a large library of songs
  199.       in many styles of music .
  200.    Examples of situations where the program is most useful include:
  201.      1. Playalong at home using the computer's keyboard
  202.      2. Playalong/SingAlong at home playing your guitar etc.
  203.      3. Educational - see all the notes being played , learn about chords
  204.      4. Flexible/Expandable/Compatible - as the program is also
  205.         available as a MIDI version , if your system grows to MIDI your
  206.         songs and styles will still all work as ALL FILES ARE COMPATIBLE
  207.         IN MIDI AND NON MIDI. ALSO FILES ARE COMPATIBLE BETWEEN
  208.         THE IBM ATARI AND MAC VERSIONS OF BAND-IN-A-BOX . So if your
  209.         friend has an Atari - you can send your song to him that you
  210.         made on the IBM and it will play on his/her computer !

  263. SECTION 4 TUTORIAL FOR SOUNDBLASTER/ADLIB COMPATIBLES

  266. Tutorial :
  267.  
  268. 1. Start up the program by typing Band at the C:\bb prompt
  269.    ( assuming that you have loaded all the files to C:\bb subdirectory )
  270. 2. Load in a Demo Song of your choice from the Demo chord progressions
  271.    supplied with the program .
  272.       LET'S LOAD BOSSA.SG4   ...
  273.    Hit the <F3> key to get a menu of all songs available .
  274.  
  275.    Let's explore the File Selector window that pops up .
  276.  
  277.    From the menu of all songs you use cursor keys or PageUp/Down
  278.    to move around all of the songs .
  279.    Also the End key takes you quickly to the last item , which isn't
  280.    a song but is a special icon that allows you to move between
  281.    different subdirectories .Press ENTER key over this last icon and
  282.    then you can move up or down between levels of subdirectories .
  283.    Once you pick a song from a new subdirectory - you will automatically
  284.    be there when you look next time. You probably don't have any
  285.    songs in other directories at the moment so will get a No Files
  286.    message .

  288.    Anyways , find your Bossa.SG4 song , move the highlight bar over it
  289.    and press <ENTER> . The song will load in to the screen now .
  290.  
  291.    Press F4 to play the song.The song will start playing , initially
  292.    giving you a 2 bar drum count in .Then the music will start .
  293.    As its playing you can do lots of things , buts lets review the
  294.    PlayAlong basics
  295.     ( these are described in detail near the top of this file and
  296.     are also summarized by the Help screen available by the F1 key
  297.     during playback. )

  299.    Press [ or ] to change tempo by 5
  300.    Press { or } to change tempo by 20

  302.    use the 0 to 9 keys to change the playalong instrument
  303.       eg. 2=organ 3=jazz guitar 4=Elec.Piano 5=vibes
  304.    Shift 0 to 9 - to change the chording instrument
  305.    Alt 0 to 9 to change the Bass instrument.

  307.    F9 and F10 to change  overall volume .

  309.    o and p to change volume of playalong
  310.    Shift o and p to change volume of Chording
  311.    Alt o and P to change volume of Bass

  314.    Now , playalong !!
  315.      Using the Bottom two rows of the computer's keyboard , start
  316.      playing keys .
  317.      First use the bottom row  zxcvbnm,./ keys
  318.      Whatever note you play will be adjusted by the intelligence of
  319.      the program , so will sound good . The Bottom row is mainly
  320.      chord tones whereas the 2nd row is more interesting tones like
  321.      9ths , 11ths and 13ths of the chords .
  322.      If you want to revert to a regular scale you can do this by
  323.      pressing F2 function Key . F3 gets you back to the intelligent
  324.      mode. F4 key gets you to a rock scale , not much use in bossa
  325.      nova but useful in heavy rock,blues etc.

  327.      As you're playing , you can cahnge ocatves by the Caps Lock key
  328.      or the Shift Key  (total Playalong range 3 1/2 octaves )
  329.  
  330.      Hit the QWERTYU keys for drum sounds .
  331.  
  332.      Press ENTER Key to shut a melody note off that is playing .
  333.  
  334.      Press F1 for help during PlayBack.
  335.      Press Escape to stop Playing .

  337.      When stopped , you can freely type in your own chords to any
  338.      song, choose different styles etc. There is a tutorial for this
  339.      in the manual.
