  5. {4}For nearly twenty years, the Landsat satellites have been the primary civil operational
  6. land remote sensing space platforms for the United States.  The early image data
  7. generated by this program has greatly enhanced the scientific community's
  8. understanding of such varied Earth sciences as geology, agriculture, forestry,
  9. hydrology, oceanography and bathymetry.  Today, the Landsat data continues to
  10. serve a vital role in diverse applications such as environment monitoring, mapping,
  11. disaster assessment, oil/mineral exploration, land use and regional planning.  It's
  12. orbit is sun-synchronous.  During the Operation Desert Shield/Storm in the Middle
  13. East, Landsat image data was crucial both for preparing up-to-date maps of the region
  14. to support military operations, and for monitoring the overall environmental impacts
  15. to the area.
