  8. {4}The most sophisticated Earth-Observations Satellite ever built in Europe, is
  9. delivering huge quantities of validated products to the scientific and applications
  10. communities. The primary mission of ERS-1 and -2 is to perform remote sensing of
  11. the Earth's oceans, ice caps, and coastal regions.  The satellites will provide
  12. systematic, repetitive global measurements of wind speed and direction, wave height,
  13. surface temperatures, surface altitude, cloud cover, and atmospheric water vapor
  14. levels. Their orbit is sunsynchronous , and cover nearly every corner of the globe at
  15. least once. The radar payload allows observations through cloud and darkness.
