{4}Akebono, meaning dawn, was launched February 21, 1989 from Kagoshima, Japan.
It's mission is to investigate the particle acceleration regions above the
auroral region in order to develop a better understanding of the acceleration
mechanism and of its relation to substorm phenomena. The main receiving station is
in Kagoshima however, additional stations are planned at Syowa (Antarctica) and Prince
Albert (Canada).
