  99.  This is THE Software Installation Application Version 3 (C) by Pepys
  100.  Ltd. 1994 which is a sophisticated installation and distribution
  101.  program to accompany other Pepys' applications.
  102.  
  103.  This section of the document contains only a brief description of the
  104.  product and its features, along with instructions for its installation.
  105.  
  106.  How many times have you been hampered in using a package by a weak or
  107.  non-existent installation program?  This application enables easy and
  108.  straightforward installation together with the ability to propogate the
  109.  installed applications further.
  110.  
  111.  It is a Windows program requiring Version 3.1.  Use of the program
  112.  should be intuitive to existing Windows users.
  113.  
  114.  After the welcome window the main window allows the user to:
  115.  
  116.  *    Change the source path for installations to any drive\directory
  117.  *    Select any application for installation/download
  118.       (supported by a 'pepyinst.lst' file)
  119.  *    Change the target location of installation/download
  120.  *    Change the type of installation/download between:
  121.       - User installation on hard disk
  122.       - Distribution disk creation (on floppy of course)
  123.       - BBS Upload (on hard or floppy disk)
  124.  *    Select/Deselect any optional files for installation
  125.  *    Action the Installation, this builds a Log file which can be
  126.       reviewed and/or printed.
  127.  *    Obtain context-sensitive help
  128.  *    Quit the Program

  130.  Quite detailed help is contained within the program.  Further
  131.  information can be found in the section labelled:

  136.  THE Software Installation Application is FREEWARE in respect of its use
  137.  to install and create downloads of Pepys' and any other software which
  138.  is supported by a 'pepyinst.lst' file.
  139.  
  140.  You should not have paid any fee specifically for this application to
  141.  any disk vendors, dealers, etc, albeit that they may have charged you
  142.  for the application which is to be installed.
  143.  
  144.  If you have paid a fee then it was as a fee for their copying and
  145.  distribution services, rather than a payment for any form of use of the
  146.  program.

  148.  The program is self-installing - if required in a particular context
  149.  then it is installed in the most appropriate place on the user's system
  150.  or distribution/upload disk.

  152.  As you will have realised by now, this file is in the VENDINFO.DIZ file
  153.  standard.  If has come to you as a BBS Download, to avoid conflict with
  154.  the VENDINFO.DIZ file of the user application it will have been called
  155.  PEPYINST.DIZ.  In all other contexts it is saved as VENDINFO.DIZ.  THE
  156.  Software Installation Program controls the naming of this file when it
  157.  propagates it.

  169. ===== Installation =====================================
  170.  
  171.  There IS no separate installation procedure for THE Software
  172.  Installation Program (S.I.A.)  It can be run from any source, be it
  173.  hard or floppy disk.  The program controls its own propagation
  174.  dependent uponm the context of the required installation or download.
  175.  
  176.  The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  177.  S.I.A.  In the instructions below, the filename PEPYIN** refers to the
  178.  latest version as supplied, eg PEPYIN32 for version 3.2
  179.  
  180. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
  181.  
  182.  A diskette may either be in Distribution Disk or BBS Upload/Download
  183.  format.  The difference is irrelevant to S.I.A. except that:
  184.  
  185.  *   BBS Upload/Download disks should only contain ONE installable
  186.      application in the disk root directory, alongside PEPYIN**.EXE
  187.  
  188.  *   Distribution Disks may contain ONE OR MORE installable
  189.      applications, each one being contained in a separate sub-directory.
  190.      The root directory contains PEPYIN**.EXE, a VENDINFO.DIZ file for
  191.      S.I.A. and any system files (eg VBRUN300.DLL)
  192.  
  193.  To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
  194.  
  195.    1  Place the distribution diskette in the appropriate diskette drive.
  196.  
  197.    2  Load Windows and go to File Manager
  198.  
  199.    3  Run the "PEPYIN**.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
  200.       For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A then
  201.       issue the following command:  FILE, RUN, a:pepyin**, or double
  202.       click on the program in the a: drive directory listing.
  203.  
  204.    4  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  205.       You will have a chance to approve the installation before any
  206.       changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.  The
  207.       program will ask you for a destination drive and directory (after
  208.       suggesting defaults) and will copy the application to that
  209.       directory.  If you so direct it, S.I.A. will install the
  210.       application(s) in other drives\directories of your choice.
  211.  
  212.    5  At a certain stage of the installation you are asked if you are
  213.       likely to want to later propogate the application(s) .  If you so
  214.       define, then PEPYIN**.EXE and this file are loaded into the
  215.       directory above that where the application(s) is/are loaded.
  216.  
  217. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  218.  
  219.  If you downloaded a Pepys application from a BBS (or received it in the
  220.  form of archive files from some other source), you will need to perform
  221.  the following steps.
  222.  
  223.    1  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  224.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  225.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  226.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  227.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  228.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  229.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  230.       the package.
  231.  
  232.    2  Load Windows and go to File Manager
  233.  
  234.    3  Execute the "PEPYIn**0.EXE" program which you have extracted.
  235.       For example, if the temporary directory into which you have
  236.       extracted the application is C:\TEMPDIR, you would issue the
  237.       following command in File Manager: FILE, RUN,
  238.       "c:\tempdir\pepyin**" or to double click on the filename
  239.       "pepyin**.exe" in the c:\tempdir directory listing.
  240.  
  241.    4  Follow Steps 4 and 5 as for INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES above
  242.  
  243.    5  When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
  244.       should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
  245.       Quiz Machine (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all
  246.       its contents.
  247.  
  248. YOU'RE READY TO GO
  249.  
  250.  Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the
  251.  VENDINFO.DIZ files for the application(s), which contain all relevant
  252.  documentation.  These are contained in the same directory to which each
  253.  installation has been targeted.
  254.  
  255. FURTHER DISTRIBUTING APPLICATIONS
  256.  
  257.  As freely distributable Freeware, you are free to pass this software
  258.  (unchanged) onto anyone else.  It is possible that the applications
  259.  which it covers are Shareware.  The best way of ensuring that you pass
  260.  the applications on unchanged is to use THE S.I.A. using the options to
  261.  either create a distribution diskette or BBS Download.
  262.  
  263.  However, please note that the Freeware version of the S.I.A will NOT
  264.  create Distribution Disks or BBS Uploads of Registered versions of
  265.  software.  We can supply a registered version which has these
  266.  facilities.

  280. ----- Using THE S.I.A ---------------------------------------------

  283. On initial loading the user is presented with a welcome screen. Pressing
  284. continue initiates a search of the path from which the application was
  285. run, and all sub-directories under it.  A message box then announces how
  286. many applications have been found.
  287.  
  288. Also, if you are running the program from a floppy disk, you are asked
  289. if you wish to have the later facility of uploading to Distribution
  290. Disks and Bulletin Boards: answer YES or NO.  If you answer NO, certain
  291. files will not be installed and you will be unable to replicate the
  292. software at a later stage. After a short delay the main window is
  293. displayed.
  294.  
  295. The opening window is divided into 3 areas:
  296.  
  297. *   The source box occupying most of the left hand half of the screen,
  298. giving details of the on the source of applications to install or
  299. download.
  300.  
  301. *   The target box occupying all the right of the window, giving details
  302. of the target of applications to install or download
  303.  
  304. *   The command box in the bottom left-hand corner, containing buttons
  305. which control the application.
  306.  
  307.  
  308. Quick Start
  309. ***********
  310.  
  311. Presuming that at least one application has been found, the 'Application
  312. to Install' frame will display these installable applications.
  313.  
  314. These applications can be selected by clicking on the combo-box in that
  315. frame.  An outline description of the application can be obtained by
  316. clicking on the 'About Application' button in the same Frame.
  317.  
  318. On the right, the Target box will offer a default target drive, target
  319. directory and a type of installation.  Normally, the following will be
  320. offered as the defaults:
  321.  
  322. *    If pepyin**.exe was started from a floppy disk:
  323.  
  324.      Drive:                     Your highest hard drive
  325.      Directory:                 \Pepys\Application-default
  326.      Type of Installation:      User Installation
  327.      Install Options:           Displayed, if later distribution option
  328.                                 denied.
  329.  
  330. *    If pepyin**.exe was started from a hard disk:
  331.  
  332.      Drive:                     Your lowest floppy drive
  333.      Directory:                 Appication-default
  334.      Type of Installation:      Distribution Disk
  335.      Install Options            Not available
  336.  
  337. You may change the target drive, target directory and type of
  338. installation subject to certain logical limitations (such as a
  339. distribution disk cannot be created on a hard drive!).  If they are
  340. available, you may deselect 'Install Options', avoiding the loading of
  341. certain files to your installation.
  342.  
  343. Once you are satisfied, then press the large button in the bottom left
  344. hand corner.  This will be labelled as "Create .... " whatever
  345. installation type has been selected (eg, 'Create User Installation')
  346.  
  347. The directories proposed will be validated, and the window will change
  348. to an installation log.  As installation proceeds, you will see the
  349. progress.  You may also be asked to choose whether to overwrite any
  350. existing files, if found.
  351.  
  352. At the conclusion of the installation, the installation log also shows
  353. the outcome of the installation - either a Total Success, Partial
  354. Success or Unsuccessful.  You may print the log out by pressing the
  355. Print Log button.
  356.  
  357. If the installation was successful a Program Manager Group entitled
  358. 'Pepys Applications' will be created in your system and an icon for the
  359. application installed will be included in it.
  360.  
  361. Finally, press the Close Log button to return to the main window.  At
  362. this point, you may select another application to install (if there is
  363. more than one available to install) or Quit the program by pressing the
  364. Quit Button.
  365.  
  366. The 'Quick Start' section has taken you quickly through a simple
  367. installation or download of one application.  The S.I.A has much more
  368. flexibility than that and the remaining sections of this guide go
  369. through other options in more detail.
  370.  
  371. On Loading S.I.A
  372. ****************
  373.  
  374. The selection of otherwise of the option to later distribute the
  375. software (when running from floppy disk) has the following effects.
  376.  
  377. * If 'YES' selected:
  378.  
  379.  Pepyin**.exe (and its vendinfo.diz file) are copied to the directory
  380.  above each user installation.
  381.  
  382.  Install Options (bottom right hand box) are not offered.
  383.  
  384. * If 'NO' selected:
  385.  
  386.  Pepyin**.exe etc are NOT loaded to your installation
  387.  
  388.  Install Options are offered for user installations.
  389.  
  390. This option is further offered if you subsequently log to a floppy drive
  391. as the source of installations (see section on CHANGING SOURCE)
  392.  
  393. If no applications are found in the path from which PEPYIN**.EXE is run,
  394. then a message box informs you accordingly.  When the main window
  395. appears, the focus is highlighted on the Source Drive and Directory
  396. boxes.  You must first re-select the drive and/or directory to conduct a
  397. different search for installable applications (see next section on
  398. CHANGING SOURCE)
  399.  
  400. Changing Source
  401. ***************
  402.  
  403. Either when forced to by exception (as described above) or by your
  404. choice, the application enables the source of installable applications
  405. to be changed.
  406.  
  407. If you wish to initiate a change, first of all click on the Drive List
  408. Box. Even if you wish to just change directories, it is necessary to
  409. click on the Drive List Box.
  410.  
  411. Then select a directory (or the whole drive) within which to search for
  412. installable applications.  You do this by double-clicking on the
  413. required directory.  The higher up the directory tree you go, the wider
  414. the search, however, a search of a whole 100 Mb disk with 100
  415. directories may take a minute or so to complete.
  416.  
  417. Click on the button 'Find Installable Applications' which appeared after
  418. clicking on the drive list box.  The application will then display its
  419. search and inform you at the conclusion of how many applications have
  420. been found. CLick on the OK button, and these installable applications
  421. will be listed in the 'Applications to Install' list box.
  422.  
  423. If no applications were found a message will inform you accordingly. All
  424. other areas of the application will be disabled, and you will have
  425. broaden or change the directories of search.
  426.  
  427. If more than one application is available for installation then this can
  428. be changed by clicking on the 'Applications to Install' list box.  There
  429. will be a short delay whilst the target details are changed.
  430.  
  431. Conclusion
  432. **********
  433.  
  434. All other features of the product were described under 'Quick Start'.
  435.  
  436. The SIA should result in successful installations with no error
  437. messages.  However, it is possible that, if files have been lost in
  438. transmission, errors of missing files will be recorded.  If this is so,
  439. take a hard a copy of the Installation Log and compare it against the
  440. contents of the source media.  If expected files are deficient, you will
  441. need to contact the originator to obtain them.

  565.  status, content and licensing arrangements for this product.  Pepys
  566.  have summarised all salient facts in this 'human-readable' section of
