  1. VGA.DRV
  2. --------
  3. This is a special version of the Windows 95 VGA
  4. display driver.  It works around a compatibility
  5. problem between the Intel "Triton" PCI controller
  6. and some PCI based display adapters.
  7.  
  8. If you have a PCI based computer and are
  9. experiencing system lock-ups on the first boot
  10. after installing your PCI display adapter, 
  11. in "fail-safe boot", or when your display is 
  12. set to 640x480, 16 colors, then you should 
  13. copy this version of VGA.DRV over the version
  14. already in your Windows \system directory.

  16. VGA.VXD
  17. --------
  18. This is an extension to the Win95 VGA driver
  19. needed on some older VGA adapters, including:
  20.     DEC PC 320P laptops
  21.     Cirrus Logic 5401/02 VGA adapters
  22.  
  23. If Win95 will not boot at all, even in fail-safe
  24. boot, on a computer with a very old VGA adapter
  25. installed, then VGA.VXD may correct the problem.

  27. To use VGA.VXD, the display type must be set
  28. to "Standard Graphics Adapter (VGA)" in the
  29. Display control panel, Settings page, Change
  30. Adapter Type dialog.

  32. To install:
  33. 1) Copy VGA.VXD into the Win95 \system subdirectory.  
  34. 2) In SYSTEM.INI, edit the display= line in the [386enh] 
  35.    section to add vga.vxd, so that it appears as:
  36.     display=*vdd, vga.vxd
  37. 3) In SYSTEM.CB, add the line above to the [386enh] section.
  38.    (This file is used instead of system.ini for fail-safe boot.)
  39. 4) Restart the computer, and Win95 should boot normally.
