  10. The Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) patch is
  11. designed to upgrade your Office 97 installation in place by
  12. updating only those files that have changed in SR-1. The
  13. patch contains the most significant enhancements in SR-1,
  14. including the Word 6.0/95 Binary Converter for Word 97 and
  15. the Outlook Internet Mail Enhancement patch.
  16.  
  17. The SR-1 patch is designed to upgrade the U.S. English
  18. versions (not including International English versions) of
  19. Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition, Office 97 Standard
  20. Edition, and the individual Office 97 standalone products.
  21. Note that this SR-1 patch is not designed to upgrade
  22. localized versions of these products. Contact your local
  23. subsidiary for information about getting international
  24. versions of the Office 97 SR-1 patch.

  38. INSTALLING THE SERVICE RELEASE 1 PATCH
  39.  
  40. The Office 97 SR-1 patch is a self-contained executable file
  41. (SR1Off97.exe) consisting of only the changes made to Office
  42. files in Office 97 SR-1. When you run the patch, the patch
  43. executable finds the Office 97 files on your computer,
  44. determines which components you currently have installed
  45. from Office 97, writes the SR-1 changes to those files, and
  46. then makes appropriate changes to your Windows Registry.

  49. Service Release 1 System Requirements
  50. -------------------------------------

  52. The SR-1 patch requires the following service packs be
  53. installed before running the patch.
  54.  
  55. * For computers running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation
  56.   3.51 or Windows NT Server 3.51, install service pack 5.
  57. * For computers running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
  58.   or Windows NT Server 4.0, install service pack 2 or
  59.   later.
  60. * No service pack is required for computers running
  61.   Microsoft Windows 95.
  62.

  69. The SR-1 patch requires 32 MB of disk space to run (25 MB if
  70. you run the installer executable SR1Off97.exe from CD or
  71. floppy disk), and adds up to 8 MB of files to your hard
  72. disk.

  82. The expanded and temporary files are placed in a Windows
  83. temporary folder and removed after the patch is complete.
  84. The updated Office files remain on the disk after the
  85. computer is rebooted.

  88. Installing the SR-1 Patch On A User Computer
  89. ---------------------------------------------
  90.  
  91. The SR-1 patch only upgrades computers that have Office 97
  92. applications installed locally. If you are running Office 97
  93. from a network server, you must use the SR-1 Enterprise
  94. Update to upgrade your computer. To update your network
  95. installation of Microsoft Office 97, you need to create a
  96. new administrative installation of Microsoft Office using
  97. the SR-1 Enterprise Update.
  98.  
  99. Before installing the SR-1 patch, make sure that you have
  100. installed the required service packs for the operating
  101. system that you are running. See, "Service Release 1 System
  102. Requirements" earlier in this file.
  103.  
  104. For computers that have the Windows NT file system (NTFS),
  105. make sure you have administrative privileges; otherwise, the
  106. SR-1 patch will fail while trying to write to the Windows NT
  107. Registry.
  108.  
  109. NOTE   If you need any Office components that you do not
  110. currently have installed, install those components on your
  111. computer before installing the SR-1 patch. For more
  112. information, see "Running Office 97 Setup After the SR-1
  113. Patch," later in this file.

  115. To install the SR-1 patch on a client computer:
  116.  
  117.  1. Close any open Windows-based applications.
  118.  
  119.  2. If you are installing the patch from the World Wide Web,
  120.     connect to the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release Web site
  121.     and download the patch executable (SR1Off97.exe) to your hard
  122.     drive.

  126.     If you are installing the patch from a CD-ROM, insert the CD
  127.     in the CD-ROM drive.

  129.     If you are installing the patch from floppy disks, insert disk
  130.     1 in drive A or B.

  132.  3. In Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT
  133.     Workstation 4.0, click Run on the Start menu, and then type
  134.     path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options,
  135.     or double-click on the SR1Off97.exe file in Windows or Windows
  136.     NT Explorer.
  137.  
  138.     In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, click Run on the Program
  139.     Manager or File Manager File menu, and then type
  140.     path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options,
  141.     or double-click on the SR1Off97.exe file in File Manager.

  143.     For example, if you download the SR1Off97.exe file to folder
  144.     C:\Temp, type
  145.  
  146.     C:\Temp\SR1Off97.exe
  147.

  149.     information about the various command-line options you can use
  150.     with the patch utility.

  152.  4. Follow the instructions.
  153.  
  154.  5. If prompted, reboot the computer to complete the process.
  155.  
  156. When the patch finishes, your computer is upgraded to
  157. Office 97 SR-1.
  158.  
  159. Similar to Office 97 Setup, you can have users run the patch
  160. themselves, or you can automate the process using the same
  161. techniques described in Chapter 6, "Customizing Client
  162. Installations," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit. See
  163. "For More Information" later in this Readme file for
  164. information on obtaining the Resource Kit.
  165.  
  166. The patch executable supports the /Q command-line option,
  167. which installs the patch without user intervention.
  168.  
  169. The 7-MB file SR1Off97.exe, which you download from the Web
  170. or run from a CD or floppy disk, is an installer that
  171. contains the patch executable and its associated files in a
  172. compressed format. When you download this file from the Web
  173. and run it, or when you double-click to run it from a CD or
  174. floppy disk, it expands to approximately 15 MB of files on
  175. your hard drive, including the patch executable itself,
  176. Off97SR1.exe. When the patch executable runs, it needs an
  177. additional 10 MB of temporary disk space to update your
  178. Office files. When the patch completes and the computer is
  179. rebooted, up to 8 MB of new and updated Office files remain
  180. on the hard disk.

  182. By default, the installer program copies the expanded files
  183. into a temporary Windows folder that is deleted when the
  184. patch utility finishes the upgrade process. You can specify
  185. a different destination folder using the /T command-line
  186. option. You can also use the /C command-line option to
  187. direct the installer program to copy only the files to the
  188. temporary folder, so you can run Off97sr1.exe separately.

  191. Using Command-Line Options
  192. --------------------------

  194. To use command-line options with the patch installer:
  195.  
  196.  1. Download the patch installer program (SR1Off97.exe) from the
  197.     Web to your hard drive without running it.
  198.  
  199.     - or -
  200.  
  201.     Copy SR1Off97.exe from CD or floppy disk to your hard drive.
  202.     (You can also run the executable directly from the disk.)
  203.  
  204.  2. In Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0, click Run on the
  205.     Start menu, and then type path\SR1Off97.exe with the
  206.     appropriate command-line options.
  207.

  210.     In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, click Run on the Program
  211.     Manager or File Manager File menu, and then type
  212.     path\SR1Off97.exe with the appropriate command-line options.
  213.  
  214.     For example, if you have downloaded SR1Off97.exe to a folder
  215.     named C:\Temp, you can run the installer with no user prompts
  216.     by typing the following:
  217.  
  218.     C:\Temp\SR1Off97.exe /Q
  219.  
  220. The installer recognizes the following command-line options:
  221.  
  222. Option       Description
  223. ------       -----------
  224. /Q           Runs in quiet mode; no user prompts are given.
  225.              The patch will not reboot the computer
  226.              automatically; the user must reboot the
  227.              computer manually before the changes will take
  228.              effect.
  229. /T:path      Changes the default temporary folder to the
  230.              specified path. The installer program uses the
  231.              specified temporary folder for expanding
  232.              files. Folder contents are not deleted when
  233.              the patch executable finishes.
  234. /C           Extracts files to the folder specified by the
  235.              /T option, but does not run the patch
  236.              executable.

  239. SR-1 Patch Log File
  240. -------------------
  241.  
  242. The patch executable records a log of all the actions it
  243. takes. The log file is named 97sr1_0.txt and is created in
  244. the Office subfolder of the Microsoft Office folder (default
  245. is \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office). If the patch is
  246. run more than once, additional log files are created with
  247. the names 97sr1_1.txt, 97sr1_2.txt, and so forth.

  252. RUNNING OFFICE 97 SETUP AFTER THE SR-1 PATCH
  253.  
  254. If you need to run Office 97 Setup to add an Office
  255. application (Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint,
  256. or Word) after running the patch, then you must run the
  257. patch again to update the additional files.
  258.  
  259. If you need to run Office 97 Setup to add any individual
  260. components (such as Equation Editor or the Word Address
  261. Book) after running the patch, you cannot run the patch
  262. again to update the additional files. Instead, you may need
  263. to remove Office 97, install it with the additional
  264. components, and then run the patch again. For more
  265. information on adding Office 97 components after running the
  266. SR-1 patch, connect to the Microsoft Technical Support

  271. If you need to return a client computer to the original
  272. Office 97 version, use Office 97 Setup to remove Office and
  273. then install it again.

  275. To reinstall Office 97 after the SR-1 patch:
  276.  
  277.  1. Close all Windows-based applications.
  278.  
  279.  2. In Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0, point to Settings
  280.     on the Start menu, and then click Control Panel.
  281.  
  282.     - or -
  283.  
  284.     In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, double-click the Control Panel
  285.     icon in Program Manager.
  286.  
  287.  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  288.  
  289.  4. Double-click Microsoft Office 97, Standard Edition, or
  290.     Microsoft Office 97, Professional Edition.
  291.  
  292.     This starts the Office 97 Setup program.
  293.  
  294.  5. Click Remove All.
  295.  
  296.     Setup removes all Office 97 files, including SR-1
  297.     modifications, but leaves any user files created using Office
  298.     97 applications.
  299.  
  300.  6. Run Setup from the original Office 97 network server, CD, or
  301.     floppy disk to install Office 97. For more information, see
  302.     "Installing Office from the Network" in Chapter 4, "Installing
  303.     Microsoft Office," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit.

  305. This will remove all the modifications made to Office files
  306. by the patch and return Office 97 applications to the
  307. original version.
  308.  
  309. Some of the system files modified by the patch will remain
  310. on the computer, but this does not affect the operation of
  311. Office 97 or other applications. The following system files
  312. are modified by the SR-1 patch and are not returned to their
  313. original versions when Office 97 is removed and reinstalled.
  314. Do not attempt to manually remove these files because they
  315. are used by Office and other Windows applications.
