  10. The Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 2 (SR-2) patch is
  11. designed to upgrade your current version of Office 97 by
  12. updating only those files that have changed in SR-2. The
  13. patch contains all the enhancements in SR-2. 
  14.  
  15. The SR-2 patch is designed to upgrade the English versions 
  16. of Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition, Office 97 Standard
  17. Edition, and the individual programs included in Office 97.
  18. Note that this SR-2 patch is not designed to upgrade
  19. localized versions of these programs. For information about
  20. getting international versions of the Office 97 SR-2 patch,
  21. contact your local subsidiary.

  37. INSTALLING THE SR-2 PATCH
  38. The Office 97 SR-2 patch (sr2bof97.exe) is an installer that
  39. contains the patch executable file and its associated files in a
  40. compressed format. The patch contains only the changes made to Office
  41. files in Office 97 SR-2. When you run the executable file, it finds 
  42. the Office 97 files on your computer, determines which Office 97 
  43. components you currently have installed, makes the SR-2 changes 
  44. to those files.
  45.  
  46. Before running the SR-2 patch, make sure the original install 
  47. location (either CD-ROM or network server) is available.
  48.  
  49. The SR-2 patch cannot patch an installation of Office 97 that is
  50. configured to run from a CD-ROM. Contact Microsoft Technical 
  51. Support for a replacement CD-ROM.
  52.  
  53. The Microsoft Office 97 Version Checker (sr2chk.exe) utility 
  54. is not intended to be used to verify a network installation of 
  55. Microsoft Office 97. It should be run on a local workstation or 
  56. your personal computer to verify the Office 97 installation and 
  57. to recommend the best method for upgrading to SR-2 level.

  59. SR-2 Patch System Requirements
  60. -------------------------------------

  62. The SR-2 patch requires that all installed Office 97 programs
  63. already be upgraded to the SR-1 level. If any of your installed
  64. Office 97 applications are not at the SR-1 level, you can find the
  65. SR-1 patch (Sr1off97.exe) on the SR-2 patch CD or at the following 
  66. Web site:

  70. The SR-2 patch also requires that the following service pack be
  71. installed before installing the patch:
  72.  
  73.  
  74. * For computers running Microsoft Windows NT Workstation
  75.   3.51 or Windows NT Server 3.51, install service pack 5.
  76. * For computers running Windows NT Workstation 4.0
  77.   or Windows NT Server 4.0, install service pack 3 or
  78.   later.
  79.  
  80. No service pack is required for computers running Microsoft
  81. Windows 95. The Setup program for the SR-2 patch will ask for
  82. the full Product ID number, which can be found in the About
  83. Product Name dialog box (Help menu) of any installed
  84. Office 97 program.

  91. The SR-2 patch requires 65MB of disk space. Expanded and 
  92. temporary files are placed in a Windows temporary folder 
  93. and removed after the patch is complete. Only the updated 
  94. Office files remain on the disk after the computer is 
  95. rebooted.

  97. Installing the SR-2 Patch
  98. ---------------------------------------------
  99.  
  100. The SR-2 patch upgrades files for Office 97 that are installed
  101. locally. If you are running any Office 97 programs from one or 
  102. more network servers, every server must be upgraded to SR-2 
  103. before you can install the patch on your computer. Contact 
  104. your system administrator for more information.
  105.  
  106. Before installing the SR-2 patch, make sure that you have
  107. installed the required service packs for the operating
  108. system that you are running. See "SR-2 System
  109. Requirements" earlier in this file.
  110.  
  111. NOTE   If you need any Office components that you do not
  112. currently have installed, install those components and then
  113. upgrade them to SR-1 before installing the SR-2 patch. For 
  114. more information, see "Running Office 97 Setup After Installing
  115. the SR-2 Patch," later in this file.

  117. >>>To install the SR-2 patch:

  119.  1. Close any open Windows-based applications.
  120.  
  121.  2. Do one of the following:
  122.  
  123.     *If you are installing the patch from the World Wide Web,
  124.     connect to the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release Web site 
  125.     (http://www.microsoft.com/office/office/enhancements/sr2off97.asp)
  126.     and then download the patch installer (sr2bof97.exe) to your hard
  127.     disk.
  128.  
  129.     *If you are installing the patch from a CD, insert the CD
  130.     in the CD-ROM drive.
  131.  
  132.     *If you are installing the patch from a Web download, at the
  133.     command prompt in the download directory, type "sr2bof97.exe"
  134.  
  135.  3. Do one of the following:
  136.  
  137.     * If you are running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT
  138.     Workstation 4.0, click Run on the Start menu and then type
  139.     path\sr2bof97.exe with the appropriate command-line options
  140.     (see "Using Command-Line Options" later in this file),
  141.     or double-click the sr2bof97.exe file in Windows Explorer or
  142.     Windows NT Explorer.
  143.  
  144.     * If you are running Windows NT Workstation 3.51, click
  145.     Run on the File menu in Program Manager or File Manager,
  146.     and then type path\sr2bof97.exe with the appropriate
  147.     command-line options (see "Using Command-Line Options"
  148.     later in this file), or double-click the sr2bof97.exe
  149.     file in File Manager.

  151. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  152.  
  153. 5. If prompted, reboot the computer.
  154.  
  155. The patch is installed without 
  156. user intervention. An end-user can install the patch, or
  157. the system administrator can automate the process by using the 
  158. techniques described in Chapter 6, "Customizing Client
  159. Installations," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit. See
  160. "Sources for More Information," later in this file for
  161. information on obtaining the Office Resource Kit.

  163. Using Command-Line Options
  164. --------------------------
  165.  
  166. The Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 Patch program is an IExpress 
  167. application. To run the SR-2 Patch program in Quiet and 
  168. Admin modes, at the prompt, type:
  169.  
  170. sr2bof97.exe /Q /c:"sr2patch.exe /A"
  171.  
  172. When the Microsoft Office SR-2 Patch program runs in Admin 
  173. mode, it will prompt you for locations of the Microsoft 
  174. Office application, the Microsoft Shared Applications, 
  175. and for the location of the STF and INF files (Setup files). 
  176. The Setup files are typically located in the same location 
  177. as the Microsoft Office applications. If you have used the 
  178. Network Install Wizard (NIW) to customize the Setup files, 
  179. these files are located either at the same location or in 
  180. a subdirectory that was created using the NIW program.
  181.  
  182. The installer recognizes the following command-line options:
  183.  
  184. Option                 Description

  186. /A                     Runs in Admin mode.
  187.  
  188. /Q                     Runs in quiet mode; limited user prompts
  189.                        are given. At the MS-DOS prompt, type:
  190.                        sr2off97 /q /c:"sr2patch /q"  
  191.  
  192. NOTE    If you are a system administrator for multiple servers,
  193. upgrade all servers to SR-2 before upgrading workstations that
  194. run applications directly from the network server. Doing so 
  195. will prevent problems if users are running different Office 97 
  196. applications from different servers.

  198. SR-2 Patch Log File
  199. -------------------
  200.  
  201. The patch executable file records a log of all of the actions it
  202. takes. The log file is named 97sr2_0.txt and is created in
  203. the Office folder in the Microsoft Office folder (default location 
  204. is \Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office). If the patch is
  205. run more than once, additional log files are created with
  206. the names 97sr2_1.txt, 97sr2_2.txt, and so on.

  209. Detecting the latest changes on a machine
  210. ----------------------------------------------------------
  211.  
  212. To detect that this version of the SR2 patch is installed on
  213. a machine, check the version numbers of the following files:
  214.  
  215. File           SR2b version

  217. msjet35.dll    3.51.2723.0
  218. msrepl35.dll   3.51.2404.0
  219. rm.dll         1.0.0.104
  220. transmgr.dll   1.0.0.100 (note: File Properties incorrectly report 1.0.0.102)

  224. RUNNING OFFICE 97 SETUP AFTER INSTALLING THE SR-2 PATCH
  225.  
  226. If you need to run Office 97 Setup to add an Office
  227. program (Microsoft Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint,
  228. or Word) or any individual component after installing 
  229. the patch, then you must reinstall the patch to update 
  230. the additional files.
  231.  
  232. If you need to return a computer to the original
  233. Office 97 version, use Office 97 Setup to remove Office and
  234. then reinstall it.
  235.  
  236. >>>To reinstall Office 97 after installing the SR-2 patch:

  238.  1. Close all Windows-based applications.
  239.  
  240.  2. Do one of the following:
  241.  
  242.     *In Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation 4.0, point to Settings
  243.     on the Start menu, and then click Control Panel.
  244.  
  245.     *In Windows NT Workstation 3.51, double-click the Control Panel
  246.     icon in Program Manager.
  247.  
  248.  3. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  249.  
  250.  4. Double-click Microsoft Office 97, Standard Edition, or
  251.     Microsoft Office 97, Professional Edition, or any Office 97
  252.     program.
  253.  
  254.     This starts the Office 97 Setup program.
  255.  
  256.  5. Click Remove All.
  257.  
  258.     Setup removes all Office 97 files, including SR-2
  259.     modifications, but leaves any user files created by using Office
  260.     97 programs.
  261.  
  262.  6. Run Setup from the original Office 97 network server, CD, or
  263.     floppy disk to install Office 97. For more information, see
  264.     "Installing Office from the Network" in Chapter 4, "Installing
  265.     Microsoft Office," in the Microsoft Office 97 Resource Kit.

  268. Changes to Microsoft Jet 3.5
  269. ---------------------------------------------------------
  270. This release of Microsoft Office 97 SR2 Update
  271. contains the latest Year 2000 compliant changes to Microsoft
  272. Jet 3.5 files. The changes are described in the Knowledge
  273. Base article:

  279. In Microsoft Access 97, you can specify a two-digit date as a 
  280. criterion in the QBE (query by example) grid or in an object's 
  281. property sheet. This will prevent inconsistent dates that 
  282. might have occurred depending on the system settings of the 
  283. computer on which you run the query.

  286. Changes to Microsoft Outlook 97
  287. ---------------------------------------------------------
  288. This release of Microsoft Office 97 SR2 Update contains the
  289. latest Year 2000 compliant changes to Microsoft Outlook 97.
  290. The changes are describe in the Knowledge Base article:

  297. text files may not be imported or exported correctly

  302. and exporting in Outlook 97.
