  3. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version
  4. **********************************************

  6. Welcome to HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version. This
  7. document has information on:
  8.     - System requirements
  9.     - Installing HoTMetaL PRO
  10.     - Un-installing and re-installing HoTMetaL PRO
  11.     - Possible installation problems
  12.

  15. After you have installed HoTMetaL PRO, see the file
  16. readme.wri and the HoTMetaL PRO online help for more
  17. product information. You can also consult SoftQuad's online

  21. System requirements
  22. -------------------
  23.  
  24. HoTMetaL PRO Evaluation runs under Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  25. Your system must have the following, or higher:
  26. - 80486, 33MHz (Pentium recommended)
  27. - 16 MB RAM
  28. - Super VGA display, 256 colors, 640x480 resolution

  31. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version
  32. ----------------------------------------------

  34. There were two options for downloading the HoTMetaL
  35. files over the Web. The steps for installing
  36. the product are different for each option.
  37.  
  38. Option 1: If you downloaded the product in 2 pieces,
  39. then the files "hm4ev.exe" and "hm4ev.bat" should be
  40. present on your system. 
  41.  
  42. Option 2: If you downloaded the product in 7 pieces,
  43. then the files "hm4ev_1.exe", "hm4ev_2.exe", ..., "hm4ev_6.exe",
  44. and the file "hm4ev_1.bat" should be present on your system.

  47. If you chose Option 1
  48. =====================
  49.  
  50. 1. Using Windows Explorer, create a new, temporary folder
  51. and move the files "hm4ev.exe" and "hm4ev.bat" to this folder.
  52.  
  53. 2. You will need approximately 40 Mb of free disk space
  54. in order to install HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version.
  55.  
  56. 3. Double-click on "hm4ev.bat".
  57.  
  58. This will extract the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive that
  59. you downloaded, and will start the HoTMetaL installer.
  60. This step causes an MS-DOS window to be displayed.
  61.  
  62. 4. Follow the instructions given by the installer.
  63.  
  64. Note: if you already have HoTMetaL PRO 3.0, HoTMetaL Light 3.0,
  65. or HoTMetaL 3.0 Evaluation on your PC, *do not* install
  66. HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation version in the same folder as
  67. any of these products.

  69. 5. When the installation is complete and the title bar in
  70. the MS-DOS window indicates "Finished", close the MS-DOS window.
  71.  
  72. 6. You can now delete the files "hm4ev.exe" and "hm4ev.bat",
  73. and the temporary folder and all the files and folders that 
  74. it contains. Before you do this, it would be a good idea to 
  75. make sure that the main components of HoTMetaL PRO (Editor, 
  76. Information Manager, and Site Maker) can be launched successfully.

  79. If you chose Option 2
  80. =====================
  81.  
  82. If you downloaded 7 files, carry out the following
  83. steps:
  84.  
  85. 1. Using Windows Explorer, create a new, temporary folder
  86. and move the files "hm4ev_1.exe", "hm4ev_2.exe",..., "hm4ev_6.exe",
  87. and the file "hm4ev_1.bat" to this folder.
  88.  
  89. 2. You will need approximately 40 Mb of free disk space
  90. in order to install HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version.

  92. 3. From Windows Explorer, double-click on "hm4ev_1.bat".

  105. 5. When the installation is complete and the title bar in

  109. files and folders it contains. Before you do this, it would 
  110. be a good idea to make sure that the main components of 
  111. HoTMetaL PRO (Editor, Information Manager, and Site Maker)

  114. Un-installing and re-installing
  115. -------------------------------

  118. To uninstall HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version:
  119. 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings, and then Control Panel.
  120. 2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  121. 3. Choose SoftQuad HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation from the list.
  122. 4. Click on Add/Remove.
  123. 5. Choose SoftQuad HoTMetaL Site Maker Database Evaluation from the list.
  124. 6. Click on Add/Remove.
  125. 7. To re-install, follow the installation instructions again.

  128. Possible installation problems
  129. ------------------------------
  130.  
  131. Site Maker installer appears to fail
  132. ====================================
  133.  
  134. Sometimes the installer for SoftQuad Site Maker appears to fail or
  135. terminate abnormally. Each time that we have experienced this,
  136. the Site Maker files have still installed successfully. 
  137.  
  138.  
  139. Site Maker installation sometimes "hangs"
  140. =========================================
  141.  
  142. If the Site Maker installation does not terminate within 10 minutes:
  143.  
  144. 1. Interrupt the installation:
  145.     a. Type Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
  146.     b. Choose HoTMetaL PRO Eval Setup from the task list.
  147.     c. Click on End Task.
  148.  
  149. This will cause all files installed so far to be un-installed.
  150.  
  151. 2. Re-run the installer by running setup.exe. 
  152.  
  153. 3. At a certain point in the installation you will see
  154. a dialog box with the following prompt:
  155.  
  156.         "Setup will now invoke the Site Maker Installer 
  157.         to install the Site Maker - this is required for proper
  158.         functioning of the Information Manager.
  159.  
  160.         Please install the Site Maker now."
  161.  
  162. When you see this message, click on the No button.
  163. The HoTMetaL installation will continue to completion.
  164.  
  165. 4. Using Windows Explorer, go to the "sitemake" folder 
  166. (located in the folder containing the files that you downloaded), 
  167.  
  168. 5. Double-click on setup.exe in that folder to install the Site Maker.
  169.

  174. Installer fails on NT systems without 16-bit support
  175. ====================================================
  176.  
  177. If your PC is running Windows NT and 16-bit support has
  178. been removed, the HoTMetaL PRO installation program setup.exe
  179. will not run. In this case, see SoftQuad's Support Center
  180. (available from http://www.softquad.com) for an alternative installer.

  183. Installer sometimes fails to register DLLs and OCXs
  184. ===================================================
  185.  
  186. If the HoTMetaL installer gives you an error message indicating that
  187. it did not register the required DLL and OCX files, you can complete
  188. this step by running a script, as explained here:
  189.     - Copy the file fixocx.bat, located in the folder
  190.       containing the files that you downloaded,
  191.       to your Windows system folder (usually windows\system)
  192.     - Choose MS-DOS Prompt from the Programs menu
  193.     - Change directory to the system folder
  194.     - Run the script by typing fixocx.bat
  195.     - If any errors occur, open the script file with a text editor,
  196.       identify the lines that caused the errors (just look for
  197.       the OCX or DLL name that appeared in the error
  198.        message), and enter each of those lines individually at the
  199.       MS-DOS prompt.
