V. About the Authors Appearing on this CD-ROM
Joseph Bruchac (1942- ) was born in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was raised by his grandfather, a member of the Abenaki people. Today Bruchac is a well-known editor, publisher, poet, and collector of folk tales.
Judith Ortiz Cofer (1952- ) was born in Hormigueros, Puerto Rico. Because her father was in the military, she spent her childhood moving back and forth between a village in Puerto Rico and a city neighborhood in Paterson, New Jersey. She has taught English and Spanish, conducted poetry workshops, and been involved with the Bread Loaf Writers' Conferences. Her writings comprise several poetry collections, essays, and a novel, The Line of the Sun (1989).
Russell Freedman (1929- ) has written more than thirty nonfiction books for children and young adults. His book Lincoln: A Photobiography won the Newberry Medal for the most distinguished contribution to children's literature in 1988.
Pat Mora (1942- ) grew up in El Paso, Texas. Much of her poetry is about the blending of Hispanic culture into American society. In addition to several books of poetry, she has written books for children that are based on her own childhood experiences.
Naomi Shihab Nye (1952- ) was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She has written several collections of poems, including Red Suitcase (1994) and Words Under the Words: Selected Poems (1994). She regularly reads her poetry in schools, where she also runs workshops to help students find the poetry hiding in their imaginations.
Gary Soto (1952- ) was born and raised in Fresno, California, the setting of many of his stories and poems. In his writing, Soto tries to re-create the sights and sounds of the Mexican American neighborhood where he grew up.
Jackie Torrence (1944- ) grew up on a farm near Salisbury, North Carolina. She is a professional storyteller as well as a writer. Many of her most popular stories are based on traditional African American tales.

HRW License Agreement
PLEASE READ THIS LICENSE CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THIS PRODUCT.
BY USING THIS PRODUCT, YOU ARE AGREEING TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, PROMPTLY RETURN THE UNUSED PRODUCT AND ANY ACCOMPANYING ITEMS IN SALABLE CONDITION TO HOLT, RINEHART AND WINSTON, INC., FOR A REFUND. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS REGARDING THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT, THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, OR THE RETURN OF THE PRODUCT, PLEASE CONTACT THE HRW TECHNICAL SUPPORT DEPARTMENT.
1. Grant of License. This Product and related documentation, whether on disk, in read-only memory, or on any other media are being licensed to you by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc. ("HRW"). You own the media on which the Product is recorded; however, HRW and its licensors retain title to the Product and related documentation.
This Product is an educational product intended for instructional use on a single computer within an educational building. Use of this Product outside of an educational building for instructional purposes, except for those uses specified below, is prohibited. This Product contains electronic communication features that may be used over a network. For Site License information, contact the HRW Technical Support Department.
By purchasing this Product and agreeing to the terms of this license, you have permission to use the text, audio, video, tools, and other educational resources contained within the Product for use in lesson preparation, professional staff development, customizing instruction, providing instruction to individual students, and creating teacher and student presentations or work products.
You have permission to make one back-up copy of the software portion of the Product in its entirety for archival purposes, or copy it onto the hard disk of your computer and retain the original for archival purposes. Licensed users may copy the software portion of the Product in its entirety from the original media or from one single computer to another single computer, when used in conjunction with the instructional uses specified above. Copies of the Product may not be made from copies. Back-up copies must include the HRW copyright notice and any other propriety legends that were on the original copy of the Product.
2. License Restrictions. HRW reserves the rights of all materials herein and restricts the use of those materials in whole or in part for broadcast, distribution, the creation of derivative works, and all other uses of the Product not specified in the "Grant of License" portion of this agreement. Under the terms of this agreement, you may not translate the software portion of the Product, merge it with another program, or modify it, except as specifically described in the "Grant of License" portion of this agreement. No portion of the Product may be resold, loaned, sublicensed, leased, or rented. Reverse-engineering, disassembly, decompiling, or otherwise attempting to discover the source code of the software portion of the Product is strictly prohibited.
3. Copyright. This Product is copyrighted by HRW and is protected by United States and international copyright laws and international treaty provisions. Your use of this Product is subject to the terms of the "License Agreement." The right to use this Product terminates automatically if any portion of the "License Agreement" is not adhered to. You may terminate this "License Agreement" at any time by destroying the product and related documentation and all copies thereof.
4. Replacements. Should any of the media components of the Product become inoperable as a result of physical damage, HRW will replace the media component at its current manufacturing costs plus the cost of shipping and handling within one year from the date of purchase. For replacement of a media component due to physical damage, please call the HRW Technical Support Department to request a return authorization. The damaged item must be returned to the HRW Technical Support Department along with your written request for a replacement and a copy of your paid invoice. No replacements will be made for copies of the Product sold outside the United States, except for the United States Department of Defense schools.
5. LIMITED WARRANTY. HRW REPRESENTS THAT FOR A PERIOD OF 90 DAYS FROM YOUR RECEIPT OF A COPY OF THE PRODUCT THAT: 1) THE MEDIA ON WHICH THE PRODUCT IS DISTRIBUTED WILL BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER NORMAL USE; AND 2) THE PRODUCT WHEN USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS WILL SUBSTANTIALLY PERFORM THE FUNCTIONS SPECIFIED IN THE USER'S MANUAL. ANY WRITTEN OR ORAL INFORMATION GIVEN BY AN HRW REPRESENTATIVE, DEALER, AGENT, OR EMPLOYEE WILL IN NO WAY INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THIS WARRANTY.
IF THE PRODUCT DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED WARRANTY, HRW'S ENTIRE LIABILITY AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WILL BE REPLACEMENT OF THE MEDIA OR A FULL REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES ONLY IF THE PRODUCT OR MEDIA ITEM IN QUESTION IS RETURNED TO HRW ALONG WITH A COPY OF YOUR PAID INVOICE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF THE DATE YOU RECEIVED THE PRODUCT. ANY REPLACEMENT PRODUCT WILL BE WARRANTED FOR 90 DAYS FROM THE TIME IT IS RECEIVED. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS. YOU MAY HAVE OTHER RIGHTS, HOWEVER, WHICH MAY VARY FROM STATE TO STATE.
6. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTY. HRW DISCLAIMS ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WITH RESPECT TO THE PRODUCT. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO THE ABOVE EXCLUSION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
7. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY. IN NO EVENT SHALL HRW OR ITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF ANTICIPATED BENEFITS OR PROFITS, LOSS OF INFORMATION, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, OR OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCT, EVEN IF HRW HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. BECAUSE SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.
