Over a period of millions of years, there were volcanic eruptions as the planet gradually cooled. These released more gases which changed the composition of the primitive atmosphere. Volcanic eruptions were the main source of atmospheric gases until life evolved on the planet. At this stage there was little oxygen in the atmosphere, although some was formed by the breakdown of water vapour by ultraviolet†radiation.
