  4. Summary
  5. -------
  6. The object of this game is to capture the elements of the periodic table
  7. without your ship being destroyed in the process.  As you capture more
  8. elements, your ship gains additional capabilities.  If an atom hits your ship,
  9. your shield power is reduced depending on the size of the atom and the speed
  10. of the collision.  If your shield power goes to zero, your ship is destroyed.

  12. Classroom Use
  13. -------------
  14. This program was designed to give students something fun to do when they finish
  15. their work.  The student can enter his or her name, play the game, and print
  16. a periodic table with their name on it and the elements they have collected.
  17.  
  18. The 'entire' periodic chart (109 elements in this version) can also be printed
  19. for reference.

  39. Installation Notes
  40. ------------------

  42. The unregistered version of Atom Explorer does not include an installation
  43. program. The following files are included:

  45. PERTAB.EXE      - the program
  46. PERTAB.TXT    - this file
  47.  
  48. After extracting the archive, simply run PERTAB.EXE from the File menu,
  49. or you may open the Games group and add a new program item with the
  50. following properties:
  51.  
  52.         Description:  Atom Explorer
  53.         Command Line: C:\WINDOWS\PERTAB.EXE
  54.  
  55. The other properties don't matter.
  56.  
  57. These instructions assume that PERTAB.EXE is in the C:\WINDOWS directory.

  65. The atom explorer ship is controlled with the arrow keys:
  66. left and right for turning, up for thrust, down for reverse (if available)
  67.  
  68. The element boxes along the top of the screen are opened by clicking with the
  69. mouse. Each time you open a box it costs points.  The TAB key will also open
  70. the next available box.

  100. It is left to the user to guess how these elements
  101. might be used in providing the ship with the capabilities
  102. mentioned.

  104. Click in the middle of the screen with the right mouse button
  105. during game play to bring up the menu.  You may save the game this way.
  106.  
  107. Quick Tutorial
  108. --------------
  109.  
  110. After getting the program started, choose Easy level, 
  111. and set the number of elements per level to 5.
  112. Press New Game to start the game.
  113.  
  114. Get used to moving the ship around and avoiding atoms 
  115. by turning with the arrow keys and using the up arrow 
  116. to go forward.
  117.  
  118. Press the spacebar and you will see two beams converge in front of the
  119. ship. If there is an atom where they converge, it will become trapped.
  120. The lower right corner of the screen where it says BEAM charge will 
  121. show you the number of protons in the atom.
  122.  
  123. Find the element box along the top of the screen that corresponds to the atom
  124. (on the easy level, the boxes show the atomic numbers at the top).  Click
  125. on the box with the left mouse button to open it.
  126.  
  127. If you have selected the right box, the beam will stabalize and the atom will
  128. stop moving.  The beam power goes down quickly, so don't take too long
  129. or it will disengage.
  130.  
  131. If you are low on power, you may wish to wait a bit before trying to move the
  132. atom. The quicker you try to move the atom, the quicker the power goes down.

  134. Turn your ship pointing towards the box you have opened and guide the atom into
  135. the box.  If you have the right box for the element, the atom will be captured.

  137. Collect the rest of the atoms to complete the level.

  140. Notes
  141. -----
  142. Some of the elements at the top of the screen are not real elements, but
  143. all of the ones you can capture are.  On the easy level, you can see that
  144. they have unusual atomic numbers.
  145.  
  146. If you have a slower computer, you may wish to reduce the Atom Rotation Angles
  147. so the game will start quicker.  You may also reduce the elements per level
  148. to improve the game performance.
  149.  
  150. The elements for each level are chosen randomly.  If you are fortunate with the
  151. unregistered version, you may have the necessary elements to try out some of
  152. the ship's advanced capabilities.  If you aquire lasers and/or guns depending
  153. on the level, you will find that something new may emerge to fire at.
