³ This is a VENDINFO Product Information Record ³
³ ³
³ This record is a means of conveying information about a software ³
³ product from the author to distributors and users. It contains a ³
³ normal, "human-readable" section (you're reading it now), followed ³
³ by a compressed data record. The data record contains a great ³
³ deal of information in a form useable by automated tools. This ³
³ allows BBSes, disk vendors, etc. to test automatically for ³
³ permission to distribute, and to automatically extract product ³
³ information for use in BBS files databases, vendor catalogs, etc. ³
³ ³
³ The VENDINFO file standard is published and is freely useable. ³
³ ³
³ The VENDINFO toolset includes a free end-user viewer, processing ³
³ tools for use by distributors (BBSes, shareware disk vendors, ³
³ etc.), and the editor used by author/publishers to produce these ³
³ records. These tools are either free or very-low cost shareware. ³
³ The toolset can be obtained from many sources, including the ³

===== Information for Users ("READ-ME") ================
This is THE Software Installation Application Version 3 (C) by Pepys
Ltd. 1994 which is a sophisticated installation and distribution
program to accompany other Pepys' applications.
This section of the document contains only a brief description of the
product and its features, along with instructions for its installation.
How many times have you been hampered in using a package by a weak or
non-existent installation program? This application enables easy and
straightforward installation together with the ability to propogate the
installed applications further.
It is a Windows program requiring Version 3.1. Use of the program
should be intuitive to existing Windows users.
After the welcome window the main window allows the user to:
* Change the source path for installations to any drive\directory
* Select any application for installation/download
(supported by a 'pepyinst.lst' file)
* Change the target location of installation/download
* Change the type of installation/download between:
- User installation on hard disk
- Distribution disk creation (on floppy of course)
- BBS Upload (on hard or floppy disk)
* Select/Deselect any optional files for installation
* Action the Installation, this builds a Log file which can be
reviewed and/or printed.
* Obtain context-sensitive help
* Quit the Program
Quite detailed help is contained within the program. Further
information can be found in the section labelled:
'DETAILED PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION CONTENTS'
(after the INSTALLATION section below)
THE Software Installation Application is FREEWARE in respect of its use
to install and create downloads of Pepys' and any other software which
is supported by a 'pepyinst.lst' file.
You should not have paid any fee specifically for this application to
any disk vendors, dealers, etc, albeit that they may have charged you
for the application which is to be installed.
If you have paid a fee then it was as a fee for their copying and
distribution services, rather than a payment for any form of use of the
program.
The program is self-installing - if required in a particular context
then it is installed in the most appropriate place on the user's system
or distribution/upload disk.
As you will have realised by now, this file is in the VENDINFO.DIZ file
standard. If has come to you as a BBS Download, to avoid conflict with
the VENDINFO.DIZ file of the user application it will have been called
PEPYINST.DIZ. In all other contexts it is saved as VENDINFO.DIZ. THE
Software Installation Program controls the naming of this file when it
propagates it.
===== Packing List =====================================
As released by the author or publisher, this package contained the
following files in addition to this VENDINFO.DIZ:
Filename Size Date Time CRC32
PEPYIN32.EXE 56642 10-May-1995 03:20a 89C6D798
===== Installation =====================================
There IS no separate installation procedure for THE Software
Installation Program (S.I.A.) It can be run from any source, be it
hard or floppy disk. The program controls its own propagation
dependent uponm the context of the required installation or download.
The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
S.I.A. In the instructions below, the filename PEPYIN** refers to the
latest version as supplied, eg PEPYIN32 for version 3.2
INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
A diskette may either be in Distribution Disk or BBS Upload/Download
format. The difference is irrelevant to S.I.A. except that:
* BBS Upload/Download disks should only contain ONE installable
application in the disk root directory, alongside PEPYIN**.EXE
* Distribution Disks may contain ONE OR MORE installable
applications, each one being contained in a separate sub-directory.
The root directory contains PEPYIN**.EXE, a VENDINFO.DIZ file for
S.I.A. and any system files (eg VBRUN300.DLL)
To install from diskette(s), you need to perform the following steps.
1 Place the distribution diskette in the appropriate diskette drive.
2 Load Windows and go to File Manager
3 Run the "PEPYIN**.EXE" program on the distribution diskette.
For example, if the distribution diskette is on drive A then
issue the following command: FILE, RUN, a:pepyin**, or double
click on the program in the a: drive directory listing.
4 Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
You will have a chance to approve the installation before any
changes are actually made to the contents of your hard drive. The
program will ask you for a destination drive and directory (after
suggesting defaults) and will copy the application to that
directory. If you so direct it, S.I.A. will install the
application(s) in other drives\directories of your choice.
5 At a certain stage of the installation you are asked if you are
likely to want to later propogate the application(s) . If you so
define, then PEPYIN**.EXE and this file are loaded into the
directory above that where the application(s) is/are loaded.
INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
If you downloaded a Pepys application from a BBS (or received it in the
form of archive files from some other source), you will need to perform
the following steps.
1 Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
directory on your hard drive. The procedure for doing this
varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
perform this step. If not, you should be able to obtain
directions for this from the same source from which you received
the package.
2 Load Windows and go to File Manager
3 Execute the "PEPYIn**0.EXE" program which you have extracted.
For example, if the temporary directory into which you have
extracted the application is C:\TEMPDIR, you would issue the
following command in File Manager: FILE, RUN,
"c:\tempdir\pepyin**" or to double click on the filename
"pepyin**.exe" in the c:\tempdir directory listing.
4 Follow Steps 4 and 5 as for INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES above
5 When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
Quiz Machine (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all
its contents.
YOU'RE READY TO GO
Once you've complete the installation, you should consult the
VENDINFO.DIZ files for the application(s), which contain all relevant
documentation. These are contained in the same directory to which each
installation has been targeted.
FURTHER DISTRIBUTING APPLICATIONS
As freely distributable Freeware, you are free to pass this software
(unchanged) onto anyone else. It is possible that the applications
which it covers are Shareware. The best way of ensuring that you pass
the applications on unchanged is to use THE S.I.A. using the options to
either create a distribution diskette or BBS Download.
However, please note that the Freeware version of the S.I.A will NOT
create Distribution Disks or BBS Uploads of Registered versions of
software. We can supply a registered version which has these
facilities.
----- Detailed Product Documentation Contents ---------------------
The following 'headings' follow within this section:
* Using THE S.I.A
* Release History
* Hey! Authors, Vendors and Distributors
- You CAN buy THE S.I.A.
* Company Information
* Viewing this File in Full.
----- Using THE S.I.A ---------------------------------------------
On initial loading the user is presented with a welcome screen. Pressing
continue initiates a search of the path from which the application was
run, and all sub-directories under it. A message box then announces how
many applications have been found.
Also, if you are running the program from a floppy disk, you are asked
if you wish to have the later facility of uploading to Distribution
Disks and Bulletin Boards: answer YES or NO. If you answer NO, certain
files will not be installed and you will be unable to replicate the
software at a later stage. After a short delay the main window is
displayed.
The opening window is divided into 3 areas:
* The source box occupying most of the left hand half of the screen,
giving details of the on the source of applications to install or
download.
* The target box occupying all the right of the window, giving details
of the target of applications to install or download
* The command box in the bottom left-hand corner, containing buttons
which control the application.
Quick Start
***********
Presuming that at least one application has been found, the 'Application
to Install' frame will display these installable applications.
These applications can be selected by clicking on the combo-box in that
frame. An outline description of the application can be obtained by
clicking on the 'About Application' button in the same Frame.
On the right, the Target box will offer a default target drive, target
directory and a type of installation. Normally, the following will be
offered as the defaults:
* If pepyin**.exe was started from a floppy disk:
Drive: Your highest hard drive
Directory: \Pepys\Application-default
Type of Installation: User Installation
Install Options: Displayed, if later distribution option
denied.
* If pepyin**.exe was started from a hard disk:
Drive: Your lowest floppy drive
Directory: Appication-default
Type of Installation: Distribution Disk
Install Options Not available
You may change the target drive, target directory and type of
installation subject to certain logical limitations (such as a
distribution disk cannot be created on a hard drive!). If they are
available, you may deselect 'Install Options', avoiding the loading of
certain files to your installation.
Once you are satisfied, then press the large button in the bottom left
hand corner. This will be labelled as "Create .... " whatever
installation type has been selected (eg, 'Create User Installation')
The directories proposed will be validated, and the window will change
to an installation log. As installation proceeds, you will see the
progress. You may also be asked to choose whether to overwrite any
existing files, if found.
At the conclusion of the installation, the installation log also shows
the outcome of the installation - either a Total Success, Partial
Success or Unsuccessful. You may print the log out by pressing the
Print Log button.
If the installation was successful a Program Manager Group entitled
'Pepys Applications' will be created in your system and an icon for the
application installed will be included in it.
Finally, press the Close Log button to return to the main window. At
this point, you may select another application to install (if there is
more than one available to install) or Quit the program by pressing the
Quit Button.
The 'Quick Start' section has taken you quickly through a simple
installation or download of one application. The S.I.A has much more
flexibility than that and the remaining sections of this guide go
through other options in more detail.
On Loading S.I.A
****************
The selection of otherwise of the option to later distribute the
software (when running from floppy disk) has the following effects.
* If 'YES' selected:
Pepyin**.exe (and its vendinfo.diz file) are copied to the directory
above each user installation.
Install Options (bottom right hand box) are not offered.
* If 'NO' selected:
Pepyin**.exe etc are NOT loaded to your installation
Install Options are offered for user installations.
This option is further offered if you subsequently log to a floppy drive
as the source of installations (see section on CHANGING SOURCE)
If no applications are found in the path from which PEPYIN**.EXE is run,
then a message box informs you accordingly. When the main window
appears, the focus is highlighted on the Source Drive and Directory
boxes. You must first re-select the drive and/or directory to conduct a
different search for installable applications (see next section on
CHANGING SOURCE)
Changing Source
***************
Either when forced to by exception (as described above) or by your
choice, the application enables the source of installable applications
to be changed.
If you wish to initiate a change, first of all click on the Drive List
Box. Even if you wish to just change directories, it is necessary to
click on the Drive List Box.
Then select a directory (or the whole drive) within which to search for
installable applications. You do this by double-clicking on the
required directory. The higher up the directory tree you go, the wider
the search, however, a search of a whole 100 Mb disk with 100
directories may take a minute or so to complete.
Click on the button 'Find Installable Applications' which appeared after
clicking on the drive list box. The application will then display its
search and inform you at the conclusion of how many applications have
been found. CLick on the OK button, and these installable applications
will be listed in the 'Applications to Install' list box.
If no applications were found a message will inform you accordingly. All
other areas of the application will be disabled, and you will have
broaden or change the directories of search.
If more than one application is available for installation then this can
be changed by clicking on the 'Applications to Install' list box. There
will be a short delay whilst the target details are changed.
Conclusion
**********
All other features of the product were described under 'Quick Start'.
The SIA should result in successful installations with no error
messages. However, it is possible that, if files have been lost in
transmission, errors of missing files will be recorded. If this is so,
take a hard a copy of the Installation Log and compare it against the
contents of the source media. If expected files are deficient, you will
need to contact the originator to obtain them.

----- HEY! Authors, Vendors and Distributors,
You CAN by THE S.I.A for your own use
This is a generic piece of Windows software which can be used to
install any application. It has the added advantage of also being used
to create a distribution diskette or BBS Upload on hard or floppy disk.
**************************
** INSTALLATION PROGRAM **
**************************
The program is designed specifically for propogating shareware and its
features provide considerable benefits to authors and distributors of
software written in any language.
* Generic program, installation controlled by a standard file:
PEPYINST.LST. Your construction of this file defines the
installation.
* Install option features (defined in pepyinst.lst) include:
- Wildcard file installations - handle 0,1 or many files meeting
the same wildcard specification (eg *.bmp)
- Installs specified windows and/or system files (eg .wav's
.dll's, vbx's, etc) to windows and/or system directories only
if not present already. - User selectable options supported
- Small data files created from pepyinst.lst directly.
- One-on-one small file creations can be linked to wildcard file
installations.
- Also handles installation of documentation and install program
files.
* The installation program can be used to propogate the program.
It can successively be used to do a user installation and then a
distribution diskette and BBS upload production and over again.
* Can handle more than one application on one distribution disk.
* The user can specify any valid drive\directory for installation
* An installation log is produced on-screen and can be printed.
* Pepyinst.lst files are encrypted to prevent tampering.
The program can be sold to you at one of two levels:
* The object code with the encrypter, a description of the
PEPYINST.LST standard and branding with your own graphic. This
could be used to install any Windows software, not just Visual
Basic. This is available for just $24.99 (14.99)
* The Visual Basic 3 source code with the above package. Authors
would have the freedom to modify the package (ie introduce new
features, change logos, etc) and to issue Copyright on the object
code provided that:
- It is distributed as Freeware
- No attempt is made to re-sell the source code.
- No changes are made to existing elements of the PEPYINST.LST
standard.
- Any ADDITIONS and EXTENSIONS made to the standard must be
communicated back to Pepys Ltd.
The price of this option is $99.99 (59.99).

The heading at the foot of the document announces the VENDINFO
compressed data section. This communicates, in a structured way, the
status, content and licensing arrangements for this product. Pepys
have summarised all salient facts in this 'human-readable' section of
the document, however, if you are involved in the business of software
distribution, or are on-line to BBS then you will almost certainly want
to be able access the full information content of this file.
To do so you need the program VENDVIEW, which is Freeware. Pepys are
able to distribute this file to you for a small distribution charge.

specifically includes the following:
- All material relating to Pepys' own advertising on the Order
Form, namely the *.bmp files and the file TITLES.TXT, all
unaltered.
- This VENDINFO.DIZ file.
- The installation list file PEPYINST.LST, unaltered. This is
essential for the installation program PEPYIN**.EXE to work

similar or dissimilar nature for distribution; however, we
re-iterate that the installation program PEPYIN**.EXE and
PEPYINST.LST must still be available in such distribution.
