The WordPerfect Report
Spring 1993
Volume VII, Number 1
THE RACE IS ON!
With the December release of WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows (WPWin
5.2), our race into 1993 is off to an exciting start. WPWin 5.2 is
the first in a suite of Windows applications that are lined up for
release this yearlook for three more: WordPerfect Office 4.0 for
Windows, Presentations 2.0 for Windows, and InForms for Windows.
We have also recently added some of the worlds "best-of-class"
products to our line-upproducts that we have watched other
companies develop and market with a great deal of innovation and
success.
Grammar Checker
This spring, we will complete the acquisition of the company that
makes the best-selling grammar checker in the world, a product
known to millions as Grammatik. We are delighted to welcome
Reference Software International, the maker of Grammatik, as the
newest member of WordPerfect Corporation.
Communications
MagicSoft was acquired last summer to provide you with the best
communications software on the market for our e-mail, calendaring,
and scheduling software. Youll see the expertise of MagicSofts
innovative developers in WordPerfect Office 4.0, our Works
products, and other products coming this year.
Integrated Software
Last fall, we bought BeagleWorks for Macintosh from Beagle Bros,
Inc., so we could give you the best possible integrated software
program for Macintosh. We are calling this all-in-one package
WordPerfect Works for Mac. Included are six modules: word
processing, database, draw, paint, communications, and spreadsheet
with charting.
New Versions of WordPerfect and Office
WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS will soon be in beta testing, our last
testing phase before we ship the product. QuickFinder and
Grammatik 5 are two powerful tools included with WP6.0. This new
release of WordPerfect will be available soon on all supported
platformswith complete compatibility built in.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 is like nothing on the market today. Our
goal was to bring into one program solutions to the most common
communications problems in the work place. As you will discover,
e-mail, calendaring, scheduling, and task management are handled
easily and smoothly with Office 4.0. Office 4.0 for Windows, DOS,
and other platforms will soon be available.
International Growth
International sales accounted for almost 40 percent of our total
sales last year. Because international interest is strong and
growing, we are looking at several new ways to expand our namerecognition to compowder users around the world.
In Europe, for example, we just announced our three-year
sponsorship of the world-champion Jan Raas cycling team. Cycling
is especially popular in Europe, and next to soccer, the
most-watched sport in Europe. We look forward to making many new
friends through the sponsorship of this excellent team.
For us, the race is on for 1993. With so many changes and plans
nearing completion, you wont want to miss what is coming in the
next few months. Stay with us for what will be a very eventful and
exciting year.
Sincerely,
Alan Ashton
President

[end box]WORDPERFECT OFFICE 4.0 ENTERS BETA
WordPerfect Office 4.0,WP Corp's new electronic mail, calendar, and
scheduling program, is in beta testing and is scheduled for release
in mid-1993. This feature-rich product introduces a completely new
approach in electronic communications.
What Is Different About Office 4.0?
You will see some exciting changes with WordPerfect Office 4.0.
Users of previous versions will see that this newest release is a
major upgrade from what theyve used before.
Features Retained
The most popular features from WordPerfect Office are still
thereOut Box, message and status tracking, control (retraction or
"save your job" feature), WP interface, and more.
Changes
Instead of offering three separate programs to meet your office
needs, Office 4.0 has them all combined into one. And, instead of
simply adding new features for e-mail, this version extends such
features as folders and rules (intelligent management of messages)
to work with more than just e-mailgiving a whole new dimension in
setting up appointments, scheduling resources, and assigning to-do
items (tasks).
Expanded Capabilities
WordPerfect Office 4.0 has been expanded to support workflow
services and electronic forms capabilities (with WP InForms).
Why Upgrade to WordPerfect Office 4.0?
With the new system administration and directory services in 4.0,
adding users across the network, regardless of platform, is
automatic. Setting up large networks with connections between
gateways and remote offices can be done centrally through a
consistent administration interface.
Support for large organizations is no longer a problem with our
directory service which is capable of supporting more than 100,000
users. The interface has been enhanced and now offers the
convenience of pull-down menus, mouse support, Button Bar, and
direct WP printing capabilities for calendar printouts. In
addition, WPCorp is still committed to cross-platform supporta 4.0
version will be introduced for Macintosh, DOS, and Windows at the
same time, with OS/2 PM and UNIX coming out shortly thereafter.

[end box]EASY-TO-USE DATAPERFECT 2.3 IS READY TO USE
A new release of DataPerfect is scheduled to begin shipping in
February 1993, and is available to WordPerfect word processing
software owners for a limited time for $129.US/$155.CAN.
DataPerfect 2.3 for DOS gives you advanced, fully-relational
database capabilities without requiring you to learn a programming
language. Front-end menus navigate you through databases so you
can quickly and easily access and manipulate information.
DataPerfect menus will also direct you step-by-step as you build
your own database applications. The applications you create
automatically incorporate flexible lookup features, networking, and
other powerful capabilities.
In DataPerfect you dont have to work with any code to program its
database management capabilities into your applications. As a
network-ready product, DataPerfect requires no special network
installation. You can also use DataPerfect as a stand-alone
product on your PC.
To make the product even easier to use, we are bundling ten
database applications with DataPerfect 2.3. You can start using
the checkbook, time and billing, invoicing, mailing, and other
applications just as soon as you load your software.
New Enhancements
With its new capabilities, DataPerfect 2.3 is easier to use and
more powerful than ever. New enhancements include front-end menus,
a Quick Merge Define report option, diagnostics and order
utilities, phone dialing capabilities, and an optional transaction
log feature.
Improved Menu System
The new menu system will give you better control and faster access
to your data. You can customize front-end menus and create a
number of submenus for each database. You can run reports from
menu selections, launch shell macros, or go directly into specific
panels. Password protection will help you control to what extent
other users can create, edit, and delete records.
Reporting and Dialing Capabilities
DataPerfect gives users simultaneous access to records so that
multiple users can create, edit, set up, and run reports at the
same time. You can never be "locked out" of a record you have
password rights to access, even when another user is accessing that
record. With one keystroke, you can use the new Quick Merge Define
feature to create WordPerfect 5.0 or 5.1 secondary merge files.
DataPerfect phone dialing capabilities let you direct a modem to
dial a phone number from a file simply by pressing a function key.
Added Utilities
DataPerfect 2.3 ships with two new utilities, DPDiagnostics and
DPOrder. If you develop a structural or other problem in thedatabase applications you create, DPDiagnostics detects those
errors and sends error messages to a file that can be read on
screen or printed. DPOrder lets you place most frequently used
reports and panels at the top of an on-screen list.
Transaction Log
The optional Transaction Log helps you export all the information
in a database to a single transaction log. Using the log import
facility, you can retrieve all database data in a single operation.
This reduces the time you lose adding or deleting fields in an
existing database.
Test Drive
You can test out the new DataPerfect 2.3 by calling Information
Services (see inside back cover) and asking for a free copy of our
DataPerfect Test Drive Kit. The Test Drive Kit gives you the
features of DataPerfect but limits you to creating four panels and
99 records. The kit lets you explore this easy-to-use, powerful
product and includes the ten database applications that ship with
DataPerfect.

We Need Your Comments!
Some people have contacted us asking if we could carry more
information on certain products and platforms in our newsletters.
They ask us if we would produce separate versions of WordPerfect
Report that would keep them up to date on, for example, development
of products for Macintosh or Windows. We think that's a great idea
and we would like your input. Included in this edition of
WordPerfect Report is a business reply card with questions that
will help us determine your interest in newsletters targeted
specifically to your product or platform.
Please give us your comments on the attached business reply card
and mail it to us before April 30, 1993. Your suggestions will
help us make improvements to better meet your needs.
[end box]WPWIN 5.2 MAKES IS QUICK AND EASY
You should see what WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows (WPWin 5.2) now
offers. More power and capability than ever before is packed into
this version, which began shipping in December 1992.
QuickFinderNEW in 5.2
The new QuickFinder in WPWin 5.2 offers some of the fastest
indexing and text retrieval in the industry. WordPerfect has
always let you search directories for a particular word or file
pattern, but the QuickFinder lets you search any combination of
directories or drives (even on a network). It will index groups of
files so you can search more quickly for information within them.
The strengths of QuickFinder include the speed of index generation,
the small size of the generated index, and the nearly instantaneous
searches on an index.
QuickMenuNEW in 5.2
A QuickMenu appears when you click your right mouse button on any
Button Bar, graphics or text box, or graphic line. The Button Bar
QuickMenu lists all of the Button Bars you have created so you may
quickly switch among them. It also gives you options to edit and
create Button Bars. The QuickMenu for graphics and text boxes lets
you quickly edit the contents of the box, change the position, or
add a caption.
Quick ListEasy document management
The Quick List in the File Open dialog box lets you name your
directories without the eight-character DOS limitation. For
example, you could name a directory "Business Correspondence."
Other additions to WPWin 5.2 include:
Grammatik 5
This best-selling grammar checker from Reference Software (a $99
value) helps you proofread your documents.
Adobe Type Manager
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) and 12 new type 1 fonts are included to
give your documents the professional look for which Adobe is
famous.
OLE Support
You can use elements from any Windows 3.1 OLE (Object Linking and
Embedding) server application with your documents. By
double-clicking on a linked or embedded object within your
document, you can launch the application used to create it and make
any editing changes.
Mail-enabled
If you use an e-mail package, you can send a message or document
from WordPerfect via e-mail. WordPerfect for Windows supports
WordPerfect Mail, Digitals Team-Links mail, and any e-mail program
that follows the VIM or MAPI standards such as cc:Mail and
Microsoft Mail.
New Macros
WPWin 5.2 includes a variety of new macros to create envelopes,
bullets, pleading forms, bar codes, smart quotes (typeset-quality
quotes), and more.
New Button Bars
WPWin 5.2 ships with eight new Button Bars for these features:
generate, font, page, macros, merge, layout, tools, and graphics.
Enhancements
WordPerfect 5.2 includes better support for Windows printer drivers
so you can print on multiple paper sizes and use portrait and
landscape orientations in the same document. The Envelope macro
now works with Windows printer drivers, and has been improved with
options to select from multiple return addresses and to position
the US postnet bar code.
Other enhancements include a graphical installation, better network
installation, conversion for Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0 and
Lotus Ami Pro 2.0, and an enhanced RTF conversion. The Speller has
a simplified interface, and also finds and displays misspelled
words and makes suggestions.

WP INTERNATIONAL SPONSORS WORLD-CLASS CYCLING TEAM
This year WordPerfect International becomes the sole sponsor of the
worldrenowned Jan Raas cycling team. The three-year sponsorship of
the Holland-based team will help increase international name
recognition for WordPerfect Corporation.
Next to soccer, cycling is the most-watched sport in Europe. Our
main goal for sponsoring the team is to extend and improve the
image of WordPerfect Corporation throughout Europe. The
sponsorship will help build brand name recognition in Europe, with
special focus on the French, Italian, and Swiss markets. We will
also use the sponsorship to portray the image of WordPerfect
Corporation in Europe as an innovative software company with a
complete software line for office information and communication.
The Jan Raas team is a solid, world-class organization. Jan Raas,
a former cycling world champion, is the general manager of the
16-member team. The WordPerfect cycling team is composed of racers
from Belgium, Holland, France, Switzerland, and Mexico. The team
was introduced during a press conference on January 27, 1993, in
Paris.
World Champs
The teams seven-year record of victories includes a World
Championship, 18 World Cup races, 21 stages in the Tour de France,
and overall wins in many European stage races.
The cycling season runs from February to October and the team will
compete primarily in European races. However, look for them in the
Tour DuPont, May 6-16, in the United States with stage one
beginning in Wilmington, Del. and stage 11 ending in Piedmont Triad
in North Carolina.
WPCORP ACQUIRES GRAMMATIK
In January 1993, WordPerfect Corporation announced the acquisition
of a controlling interest in Reference Software International
(RSI), the world leader in the development and marketing of
software writing tools and electronic reference works. Through the
acquisition, WPCorp also acquires Grammatik, the worlds
best-selling grammar checking software.
Top-selling Grammatik
Grammatik is currently bundled with all three of the leading word
processors in the United States and France. Grammatik has an
estimated worldwide user base of more than two million.
WPCorp also acquires proprietary computer linguistics expertise
that will revolutionize the way word processing has been done in
the past. This means careful integration of RSIs technology in
various WPCorp applications for the ultimate purpose of giving you
the best combination of software tools in the industry.
Mor*Proof Technology
With the release of Grammatik 5, RSI unveiled a new technology
called Mor*Proof. For the computer to do more work in managing the
content of a document, it has to understand what the words mean.
Mor*Proof technology is the exciting new technology that makes
understanding the content of the document possible.
WPCORP'S UNIX PRODUCTS - YEAR IN REVIEW
WordPerfect Corporations UNIX division enjoyed the best sales year
ever in 1992. New products released in 1992 include WordPerfect

Office 3.1 for UNIX is similar to WordPerfect Office 3.1 for DOS
and is very popular in the UNIX environment.
WordPerfect 5.1
WordPerfect 5.1 was a significant upgrade over WordPerfect 5.0 for
UNIX. It included both a graphical user interface version for the
X Window system and a character-based version for non-graphical
UNIX terminals. Versions of WordPerfect 5.1 for SUN SPARCstations,
HP 9000 Series 700, IBM AIX RS/6000, DG AViiON, SCO UNIX, SCO
XENIX, and UNIVEL Unixware were all introduced during the last six

1993.
More to Come in 1993
This year, the UNIX division plans to finish the DEC Ultrix version
of WordPerfect 5.1. This division will then focus its attention on
new versions of WordPerfect for UNIX and WordPerfect Office for
UNIX in order to provide users with the best and latest UNIX
technology.
WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX Demos Now on Compact Disc
WordPerfect Corporations UNIX division is moving to CD ROM
technology. Evaluation copies of WordPerfect 5.1 for SCO UNIX, SUN
SPARCstations, HP 9000 Series 700, IBM AIX RS/6000, and DG AViiON
have all been included on a single compact disc that is now
available through WordPerfect Corporation.
"Abbreviated" WP5.1 Included
The evaluation CD includes a version of WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX
complete with demonstration documents, full documentation available
through online help, and every other feature available except print
and save. Users can run the evaluation software directly from a CD
ROM drive or load the software program onto their system and run it
from a hard drive. The software included on the CD is the
graphical (GUI) version and requires the user to have the X Window
system.
WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX also has a character-based version;
however, this will not be included with the initial CD release.
If you are interested in receiving an evaluation copy of
WordPerfect 5.1 for UNIX (GUI version) on CD, call WPCorps UNIX
Orders Department at (800) 526-5026 (this number is good until the
offer expires). The disc itself is free, but there is a $2
shipping and handling fee. This offer is good through March 31,1993.
WORKING SMARTER IN WORDPERFECT
Reading personal computer magazines may be the only way to keep up
with a technology that seems to reinvent itself every other month.
Even the best books about personal computing may be outdated on the
day they reach the shelves. Thats why subscriptions to good
computer magazines are essential.
Two recommended magazines, written specifically for WordPerfect
users, are WordPerfect Magazine and WordPerfect for Windows
Magazine. Both magazines can simplify your wordprocessing life.
Each issue is packed with helpful hints, timesaving tips, quick
and easy approaches to macros, shortcuts, previously unpublished
keystrokes, and other ideas to increase productivity.
"Theres Always a Better Way!"
Step-by-step articles show you better ways to merge, address
envelopes, find elusive files, and zip through correspondence.
Tips from other readers show how they solved tough word processing
problems. WordPerfect Magazine and WordPerfect for Windows
Magazine offer you a myriad of new ideas every monthall in
user-friendly languageto use as building blocks for creating
custom solutions for problems you encounter every day.
WordPerfect Magazine
WordPerfect Magazine is the one computer magazine that regularly
focuses on word processing and related tasks, and has been rated
one of the top 15 computer publications in the US. It is dedicated
to helping you use WordPerfect to solve your day-to-day business
needs and word processing problems.
Would you like to know about the undocumented features of
WordPerfect (DOS)? Learn to create (and use) new time-saving
macros? Understand the creative uses of block, switch, merge and
other features? Produce eye-catching publications with desktop
publishing? Put your printer through all its paces? Then
WordPerfect Magazine is for you.
WordPerfect Magazine offers a mix of useful advice and solid
applications for advanced users and novices alike.
WordPerfect for Windows Magazine
WordPerfect for Windows Magazine focuses on business applications
and macros that readers can put to immediate use. Our monthly,
full-color publication also features step-by-step "how-to"
articles, along with timesaving tips, and creative applications.
WordPerfect for Windows Magazine serves as a forum for readers to
share their own experiences and discoveries. It is the first and
only magazine designed specifically for users of WordPerfect for
Windows software, and contains up-to-date information and reviews
on third-party products and new releases.
Disk of the Month
For readers who like the macros, styles, merges, and othertimesaving applications found in both magazines but dont have time
to create them, we have the solution: Disk of the Month.
Our editors pack each Disk of the Month with selected macros,
sample merge files, tables, styles and other useful tools from each
issue. These applications are tested for accuracy and a "readme
file" is then created to explain what the application does and how
to use it. The "readme file" also describes how to copy the files.
Bonus files, such as graphics and complex macros, are also included
on each disk. The Disk of the Month (each magazine has its own) is
purchased separately from the magazine, and usually arrives at the
home or office the same week as the magazine.
Perfect Solutions
WordPerfect Magazine, WordPerfect for Windows Magazine, and Disk of
the Month mean working smarter with WordPerfect. Subscribe today
by calling (800) 228-9626. You may subscribe to the magazines
separately for one year at $24.US ($32.US in Canada) or for two

special combination rate of one year at $39.US ($55.US in Canada)
or for two years at $69.US ($101.US in Canada). You can purchase
the Disk of the Month for $7.95 for a single disk or a one-year (12
disks) subscription for $69.95.
SOFTWARE PIRACY AND THE LAW
Software piracy in the US is costing almost $2.3 billion in lost
revenue, and some $12 billion in lost revenue worldwide every year.
This costly problem is receiving some serious attention by the
software industry in the US. In 1990, the US Congress approved the
Software Rental Amendments Act, which prohibits the commercial
rental, leasing, or lending of software without the express written
permission of the copyright holder. In late 1992, Congress passed
an amendment to Title 18, United States Code, instituting criminal
penalties for copyright infringement of software. Penalties now
include imprisonment up to five years and/or fines of
$2,500-$250,000.
Joining Forces
To further control the problem of software piracy, several major
software producers have joined together with the Business Software
Alliance.
The Business Software Alliance (BSA) is an organization active in
over 30 countries around the world, working independently and with
other similar organizations to stop software piracy.
BSAs report showing the current picture of piracy is not very
promising:
Approximately 40 percent of all business software in the US is
obtained illegally.
Worldwide losses due to software piracy are $12 billion
annually.
80-85% of the worlds business software is produced by US
software companies; therefore, the losses are greatest in the US.
Growth, creativity, and selling prices are all stifled for
software publishers because economic return on investments is
curtailed by illegal copying.
BSA is pointing not only to theft on a large scale, but to the
millions of individuals who copy someones program, thinking it an
innocent act hardly noticeable to anyones bottom line. But when
multiplied out, the loss from "innocent" copying is greater than
the national budgets of many countries around the world.
Risks By the Dollar
BSA points out that illegal software can be more expensive than
original software. The unnecessary risks for a user of counterfeit
software include:
Viruses, corrupt disks, or otherwise defective software.
Inadequate documentation.
Lack of technical product support available to registered
users.
Lack of reduced prices for software upgrades that are offered
to registered users.
Costly fines and/or imprisonmentraids have been conducted by
BSA, Federal Marshals, and local law enforcement officers.
BSA receives nearly 200 calls a day on its hotline from people
seeking information about piracy or to report suspected incidents
of software theft. Since 1988, BSA has filed nearly 300 lawsuits
worldwide with approximately half of these cases against end-user
organizations and the other half against software retailers.
What Can You Do?
If you have questions about the proper use of software, you may
call BSA for their "Guide to Software Management," or call the same
number to report incidents of piracy. BSA may be reached by
calling (800) 688-2721.
WordPerfect Corporation is a member of BSA, and joins BSAs other
worldwide member companiesAldus, Apple Computer, Autodesk, Borland
International, Lotus Development, Microsoft, and Novellin this
unified effort to make software less expensive, more powerful, and
more reliable for us all.

WP 5.2 for OS/2 Now Under Development
WordPerfect Corporation announced in January 1993 the development
of WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 2.0, the first graphical version of
WordPerfect for OS/2. The product is being jointly developed with
Micrografx using Mirrors technology and the same features as
WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows. WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 is scheduled
to ship this spring.
"Support from the industrys leading word processing software
developer is a clear indication of the markets support and
acceptance of OS/2," said Lee Reiswig, president of IBMs Personal
Software Products division. "WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 will satisfy
customers needs for a graphical word processor that will take
advantage of OS/2s advanced technology."
The file format of WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 is identical to that of
WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS and WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows so files
are compatible across platforms. WordPerfect 5.2 for OS/2 will also
be compatible with WordPerfect Presentations and WordPerfect Office
4.0 for OS/2 that are scheduled for release in 1993.
WP 5.2 for Windows Integrates with Digitals TeamLinks
WordPerfect Corporation announced in January 1993 that WordPerfect
5.2 for Windows integrates with Digitals TeamLinks 1.0 for
Windows. TeamLinks is an integrated workgroup platform that
enables PCs using Microsoft Windows to integrate into
enterprise-wide networks and take advantage of Digitals electronic
mail, file sharing, workflow and other workgroup applications. A
TeamLinks integration module, available from WordPerfect
Corporation, supports both the e-mail services and the File Cabinet
services of TeamLinks. Call Orders (see inside back cover) to
request the module.
WPCorp Acquires WordPerfect Publishing Corporation
WordPerfect Corporation and WordPerfect Publishing Corporation,
publishers of the WordPerfect Magazine, WordPerfect for Windows
Magazine and WordPerfect Magazine UK, have decided to join forces.
Various WordPerfect Publishing Corporation operations will be
phased into WordPerfect Corporation. The acquisition is projected
to be completed by March 31, 1993.
The acquisition will have no effect on continued production of the
WordPerfect magazines. WordPerfect Magazine, one of the top 15computer publications in the country, is read in more than 90
countries. Combined, WordPerfect magazines have more than 300,000
readers. In just four years, WordPerfect Publishing Corporation
has also become the largest commercial publisher in the state of
Utah, has grown from five employees to 105, and has seen revenues
exceed $12 million. The acquisition will increase WPCorps ability
to create newsletters and magazines internationally.
Analysts Look to a Strong 1993 for WPCorp
Despite increased marketing efforts by competitors, most analysts
expect WordPerfect to come on strong in 1993 as corporations
already standardized on DOS move to Windows. "It will take
dynamite to get them [WordPerfect Corporation] off that track,"
said analyst Amy Wohl of Wohl Associates in Pennsylvania.
A "plan-to-buy" survey (December 1992) by Computer Intelligence, a
market research firm in La Jolla, Calif., confirmed that 66 percent
of the 1,194 US businesses surveyed who plan to buy word processing
software from December 1992 to December 1993 will purchase
WordPerfect. A similar study by Computerworld magazine (1992)
showed that 71 percent of businesses surveyed plan to buy
WordPerfect in the coming year.
"Our most recent studies show that software users have a high level
of product loyalty when it comes to using WordPerfect," said Dan
Ness, senior analyst at Computer Intelligence.
