  1. AUTODESK SHIPS AutoCAD RELEASE 12 FOR WINDOWS
  2. Premiere Windows CAD Product Delivers Ease of Use

  4. Sausalito, CA - February 16, 1993 - Autodesk announced today that its
  5. first standalone, fully functional version of AutoCAD for Windows 3.1,
  6. AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows, is now shipping to Authorized Autodesk
  7. Dealers, independent application developers, Autodesk Training Center
  8. locations, high-priority business customers, and selected publications. 
  9. General customer shipments will begin before the end of February,
  10. according to Autodesk officials.

  12. AutoCAD software is a powerful and comprehensive product that automates
  13. most design and drafting processes, increases accuracy, simplifies
  14. changes and revisions, and boosts productivity.  AutoCAD Release 12 for
  15. Windows offers the full feature set of the most current version of
  16. AutoCAD--the world's leading CAD software--plus all the flexibility and
  17. functionality of the Microsoft Windows environment.

  19. An English-language version of AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows is now
  20. available in North America and Latin America.  A separate,
  21. international English-language version is also now available for other
  22. markets.  Additional language versions will be released in coming
  23. months, according to Autodesk representatives.

  25. "This is an amazing product," said Len Rand, Vice President of
  26. Autodesk's Design Automation Group.  "It gives designers, drafters, and
  27. engineers all the benefits of the latest DOS version of Release 12,
  28. plus all the powerful usability of Windows--DOS-based AutoCAD users
  29. will find that it is remarkably fast."

  31. AutoCAD Release 12 features found in this new product include all of
  32. those in AutoCAD Release 12 for DOS 386/486, including the AutoCAD
  33. Visualization Extension (AVE), the AutoCAD SQL Extension, the Region
  34. Modeler, the AutoCAD Development System (ADS), AutoLISP, the Autodesk
  35. Device Interface, network licensing, and PostScript In and Out.  In
  36. addition, the optional, fully integrated solid modeler, the Advanced
  37. Modeling Extension (AME), is also available for AutoCAD Release 12 for
  38. Windows.

  40. Windows-Specific Features
  41.  
  42. Windows-specific features of AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows include:

  44.   o Performance enhancements--Redraw, pan, and zoom speed in
  45.     AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows performance is comparable
  46.     to (and in some cases, faster than) AutoCAD Release 12
  47.     for DOS 386/486, due in part to a built-in display list
  48.     driver.  On large drawings AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows
  49.     performs redraws faster than AutoCAD Release 12 for DOS
  50.     386/486.

  52.   o Multiple Sessions--Allows customers to, for example, begin
  53.     to plot or render a complex AutoCAD drawing in the background,
  54.     open a second AutoCAD drawing for editing, open a third next
  55.     to the second, quickly copy geometry--including extended entity
  56.     data and block references--from one drawing to the other, then
  57.     return to the plot to check its progress.

  59.   o Easy-to-use Windows Graphical User Interface--Helps make
  60.     it possible to train new AutoCAD users quickly and easily,
  61.     using pull-down menus, dialog boxes, scroll bars, icon-based 
  62.     objects, and a fully customizable toolbox into which users
  63.     can put their most frequently used AutoCAD commands.

  65.   o Object Linking and Embedding Server Implementation--A key 
  66.     Windows feature that makes it possible for users to link or
  67.     embed AutoCAD drawings into other Windows applications, like
  68.     word processors or spreadsheets, and then edit them with
  69.     AutoCAD.

  71.   o Enhanced Clipboard Support--Enables users to copy and paste 
  72.     AutoCAD drawings to other applications for reports or 
  73.     presentations, and import vector-based graphical entities
  74.     from drawings created elsewhere directly into AutoCAD drawings
  75.     and edit them there.

  77.   o Aerial View--Allows users to quickly pan and zoom to any area 
  78.     on a drawing.

  80.   o Context-Sensitive On-line Help--Much more than just an on-line 
  81.     copy of the AutoCAD reference manual; available via the F1 key 
  82.     for all pull-down menus and commands.

  84.   o Render Window-- Allows users to view several rendered images 
  85.     simultaneously; via multi-page printing, rendered images can
  86.     be subdivided into segments and printed in sections on standard  
  87.     letter-sized printers.

  89.   o Visual Basic 2.0 Support--Makes it possible for users to quickly 
  90.     and easily write ADS applications.

  92.   o Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) Support--Allows AutoCAD Release 
  93.     12 for Windows to be linked to any other database program 
  94.     supporting ODBC, such as Access, Informix, or Oracle.

  96.   o Dynamic Data Exchange--Allows lists, tables, text--such as 
  97.     data-driven design tables, bills of materials, equipment lists 
  98.     for facilities managers--in other Windows applications (e.g.,
  99.     Microsoft Excel) to be dynamically linked to AutoCAD drawings,  
  100.     ensuring that changes made in either place are simultaneously  
  101.     reflected in both drawing and linked data.

  103.   o Enhanced Digitizer Support--Makes it possible to use a digitizer 
  104.     as a Windows pointing device, eliminating the need for a separate 
  105.     mouse.

  107.   o Drag and Drop--Allows users to quickly load drawings or ADS 
  108.     and AutoLISP applications, or change menus or fonts, just by 
  109.     dragging iconized files from the File Manager onto the AutoCAD 
  110.     graphics window.

  113. Autodesk recommends a minimum configuration that includes an IBM
  114. 386/486 (or 100 percent compatible) system plus 8 to 16 MB of RAM.

  116. The suggested retail price of the AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows is
  117. US$3,750.  The suggested retail price of AME Release 2.1 for Windows
  118. (the version required for use with AutoCAD Release 12 for Windows) is
  119. US$495.
