  10.                         USAGE POLICY and CREDIT CARDS
  11.  
  12.      In addition to site licenses, there is now an individual user registra- 
  13. tion (including an update disk and support) for $30.  Credit cards may be used 
  14. to charge registration and site license fees, through the Public Software 
  15. Library.  See VDE.DOC and ORDER.FRM.

  17.                           FOREIGN LANGUAGE VERSIONS
  18.  
  19.      Several foreign language versions of VDE are under development; one, 
  20. Finnish, is now available, with full documentation.  Please write if you need 
  21. a specific foreign version, or are interested in collaborating to produce one.

  23.                        GENERIC (ANSI.SYS) SUPPORT ENDS
  24.  
  25.      VDE 1.65 will be the last version to support the Generic installation 
  26. (DOS screen output via ANSI.SYS).  Future releases will use direct video 
  27. output only, supporting IBM compatibles and a few near-compatibles.
  28.  
  29.                          NEW DEDICATED HP95LX VERSION
  30.  
  31.      In early 1993, a version of VDE extensively customized for the HP95LX, 
  32. called "FastWRITE", will be offered as a retail product by ACE Technologies.  
  33. It will include a number of additional conveniences:
  34.          * full multitasking (popup/hotkey) ability under SWITCH! 2.0 API
  35.          * special HP95LX-style command menus
  36.          * turns HP95LX serial port on/off when printing
  37.          * integrated spelling checker
  38. Registered VDE users will be eligible for a discount toward purchase of 
  39. FastWRITE for the 95LX.  Contact ACE at (800)825-9977.

  44.      The following is a quick guide, for users of previous versions of VDE, to 
  45. noticable changes in operation.  Please check VDE.REF and VINST.REF for full 
  46. details.
  47.  
  48.                                  VDE 1.65A
  49.  
  50.      Release 1.65A is a minor update with internal improvements only.  
  51. WordPerfect 5 users should find that files written by VDE in /F mode are now 
  52. consistently recognized by WP5 as WP5 documents, as may not have been the case 
  53. previously.
  54.  
  55.                                NEW IN VDE 1.65
  56.  
  57.      * There is a new "Protected mode", toggled by the command ^KO.  When 
  58. engaged, the flag "R/O" (for Read/Only) displays alone in the header, and no 
  59. commands that would modify the file will be accepted.
  60.      If you load a file with the DOS R/O attribute, protected mode will engage 
  61. automatically.  If you then disengage it, you will be able to modify the file.  
  62. See PROTECTED MODE.
  63.  
  64.      * In the File Browser, the plus key "+" acts to tag or untag files.  You 
  65. can tag as many files as VDE has room to load.  When files are tagged, you can 
  66. load them all with the ^T key.  See FILES.
  67.  
  68.      * You can invoke the File Browser from the command line by entering VDE 
  69. with a command like VDE *.DOC.  See SYNTAX, FILES.
  70.  
  71.      * A new feature has been added to filename parsing: you can include a 
  72. number in square brackets immediately after the name, and when the file is 
  73. loaded the cursor will be placed at that line (for nondocuments; page, for 
  74. documents.)  This works on the command line and at any VDE prompt.  Examples:
  75.             C>VDE PROGRAM.C[1204]               Starts at line 1204
  76.             Load new file(s): MY.DOC[20]/D      Starts at page 20
  77. The filemode, if specified, must come afterwards.  See SYNTAX.

  79.      * A number of MenuBar entries have been redesigned.  See MENUBAR MODE.

  81.                                  VINST 1.65
  82.  
  83.      * The quote key used by VINST for alphanumeric data entry in hex strings 
  84. is now ['], which most people think of as the "single-quote", instead of [`] 
  85. as before.  Also, the double-quote ["] can now be used to duplicate the 
  86. previous value.  See RUNNING VINST.

  91.                       VDE 1.64 UPDATE SUMMARY (Aug 1992)
  92.  
  93.      * ^KM (not ^PZ) now sets a place mark.  ^QM (not ^QZ) goes to a place 
  94. mark.  ^PZ now inserts an actual ^Z, as you would expect.
  95.      * Filemode /A is now truly ASCII text, and does NOT interpret control 
  96. codes as printer commands, allowing them to display and print directly.  A new 
  97. filemode /D (Document) is now the default; it DOES interpret control codes.
  98.      * There is a new find/replace option "W" for "whole word only".
  99.      * Different .VDI (installation) files can now be loaded with the AltU 
  100. command, or with a semicolon on the command line.
  101.      * Block write (^KW) now offers a choice of Overwrite or Append if the 
  102. named file already exists.
  103.      * The Esc* command has a new toggle "X,x" to control margin release.
  104.      * Print toggles/switches (^PS, etc) always insert in document modes, 
  105. rather than overstriking, regardless of INSERT status.
  106.      * Prompt input now uses ^Y (not ^X) to erase the entire entry.
  107.      * The ^QT command will report "not found" if the given character doesn't 
  108. occur -- unless it is ^Z.  ^QT^Z will still delete to the end.
  109.      * In the file browser, pressing [Esc] returns you to the ">dir" prompt, 
  110. where another directory or filespec may be given; press [Esc] again to exit.
  111.      * VDE is now DESQview aware.  It will multitask more efficiently, and no 
  112. longer needs special installation to handle direct screen writes.  See 
  113. MULTITASKING and SCREEN SIZE for further information.
  114.      * Backup (.BAK) files are handled more like they were before 1.63: every 
  115. MANUAL save (^KS,^KX etc) once again updates the BAK file.  Autosave does not.
  116.  
  117.                                   VINST 1.64
  118.  
  119.      * The printer driver "Reserve header space?" option has been replaced by 
  120. "Top margin if header used" and "Lines between header and text".
  121.      * There is a new User Option to select a default right justification 
  122. setting for documents (on or off).
  123.      * There is a new (separate) screen color for error messages.
  124.      * The Generic installation now asks whether it will be running on an IBM 
  125. PC.  Answer Yes to allow display of PC graphics characters.
  126.      * Screen colors for the HP95LX are still distinct from the IBMPC colors, 
  127. but are now also user-changeable.  To change them you must run VINST on the 
  128. 95LX (still selecting the "IBMPC" installation).
  129.      * There is a new 132-column installation option "T" for Trident SVGA.
  130.      * As of 1.64C, VINST can accept and display PC keystrokes like [PgUp] in 
  131. macro key definitions.

  135.                       VDE 1.63 UPDATE SUMMARY (Jun 1992)
  136.  
  137.      * There is a new command ^\.  Like ^L, it repeats the last find/replace, 
  138. but in the opposite direction.
  139.      * Whatever macro you have assigned to the key Esc0 will now run 
  140. automatically whenever you first enter VDE.  See AUTOEXEC MACRO.
  141.      * A pair of new macro test commands, Esc< and Esc>, allow comparison of 
  142. characters by ASCII values.
  143.      * New synonyms for commands formerly unusable in macros or Generic 
  144. Terminal mode: ^O= for [5], ^Q- for Shift[Tab], Esc^R/^C for ^[PgUp/Dn].
  145.      * When an error message displays, it is no longer necessary to press 
  146. [Esc]; it will disappear after 1.5 seconds, or upon your next keystroke.
  147.      * Block commands (except ^KV,^KPB) will now work if the block is only 
  148. half marked; they will mark the cursor position as the other end of the block 
  149. first, then execute.
  150.      * The help menu (^J) now has a new page (press "F") listing all the file 
  151. modes.  A new mode /F is for WordPerfect 5.x (/P remains for 4.x).  The mode 
  152. for WordStar 5.x is now /S (not /5) to avoid confusion.
  153.      * The variable tab set and clear commands (^OI,^ON) both now accept a 
  154. simple list "n1,n2..." of columns to add or clear several tabs.   To clear all 
  155. tabs, type ^ON* (not, as before, ^OI# or ^OI@).
  156.      * A new option, "M"=multi-file, has been added to the find/replace 
  157. commands (^QF/^QA), to allow these functions to run in sequence through every 
  158. file currently being edited.
  159.      * There is a new Print option "R" to reverse the "Reserve header space" 
  160. choice in the printer driver.  Printing can now be paused by pressing any key 
  161. other than [Esc].
  162.      * It is no longer necessary to type "SHELL" to enter a DOS shell via the 
  163. AltR command; simply hit [Enter].  ([Esc] or ^U cancel.)
  164.      * The File Browser's (^KF) behavior and command keys have been revised in 
  165. several respects.  See FILES for details.
  166.      * The graphics function (AltG) has a new command "-", which clears all 
  167. graphics definitions not currently in use; and "=" will redefine a previously 
  168. defined graphic, if it is not in use.
  169.      * In document modes, print codes are now ignored when counting columns.  
  170. This affects tabs, vertical cursor movements, and column number display.
  171.      * The HP95LX palmtop no longer requires special installation; VDE detects 
  172. it automatically.  Performance on the HP95LX has been improved.  The [MENU] 
  173. key now calls up the MenuBar.

  177.                       VDE 1.62 UPDATE SUMMARY (Oct 1991)
  178.  
  179.      *  ^KE (rename) will now accept a directory name alone, to move your work 
  180. into another directory under the same filename.
  181.      *  ^K# (auto number) now uses the simple character "#" as a number 
  182. marker; the previous command ^P# has been removed.  (You can convert files 
  183. containing old-style markers by replacing (^QA) the old code, which can be 
  184. entered as ^PF, with "#".)
  185.      *  AltS (split file) usage has been simplified: you supply only the input 
  186. file name.  VDE constructs the output name by adding numbers to the end of the 
  187. file name (so TEST.FIL produces TEST1.FIL, etc).
  188.      *  There is a new function, delete word left, given by ^[BkSp], though 
  189. this can be changed to delete character left (as before) with VINST.
  190.      *  ^[Ins] now functions as a Word Insert toggle, the same as ^].
  191.      *  The [Home/End] keys, when used repeatedly, will keep on moving to the 
  192. beginning of the previous line or the end of the next one.
  193.      *  VDE now runs in 40-column mode, on portable computers with small 
  194. screens or on any CGA/EGA/VGA system using the MODE CO40 command.  Some menus 
  195. remain 80 columns wide and can be scrolled by pressing the arrow keys.
  196.      *  AltA and AltE now fully support the changing of screen sizes under 
  197. UltraVision.  See SCREEN SIZE.

  199.                                   VINST 1.62
  200.  
  201.      *  The video card installation now supports "Standard" SVGA -- including 
  202. any VGA board (like Boca) using video modes 23h and 22h for 132 columns.
  203.      *  One new IBM PC Installation option fixes conflicts between VDE and 
  204. some other software over the use of the Print Screen key; another allows the 
  205. use of the Tandy 1000 keyboard.
  206.      *  Entry of hex strings in VINST for the printer driver has been 
  207. simplified; instead of the (#),bytes format used previously, simply enter the 
  208. desired bytes.  To enter a null string (00), type ^J or ^[Ret].
  209.      *  There is now an installation for the HP 95LX palmtop computer.
  210.      *  There is now an installation for the Otrona 8:16 with IBM video 
  211. emulation, allowing faster screen updating.
  212.      *  The Generic Terminal installation now allows choice of screen colors.

  216.                       VDE 1.61 UPDATE SUMMARY (Mar 1991)
  217.  
  218.      *  The Print command (^KP) now offers a new option "A" for convenient 
  219. addressing of envelopes while writing correspondence, by simply marking off 
  220. the address as a block and inserting an envelope in your printer.
  221.      *  The AltE command now offers a wider choice of screen sizes, from 17 to 
  222. 57 lines.  Screen sizes other than 25 and 43/50 lines require the new 
  223. companion file VDEOPT.DAT.
  224.      *  Blocks can now be marked by holding down the Shift key while moving 
  225. the cursor with the PC keypad keys (arrows, [Home, End, PgUp/Dn]).
  226.      *  There is a new file mode /C, for programming in "C" and other 
  227. structured languages: nondocument, but with autoindent and variable tabs.
  228.      *  Accessory files (including VDEOPT.DAT and all ".VDx" files) may now be 
  229. kept in a designated "VDE directory", using the SET VDE= command.

  232.  
  233.      *  Under "Installation": for IBM PCs, you can specify a default screen 
  234. size for editing with VDE.  For the generic ANSI installation, you can select 
  235. support for the special keyboards of DEC Rainbow computers or VT terminals.
  236.      *  There is a new user option to determine whether the new page is 
  237. positioned at the top of the screen after use of the ^QI,^QN,^QL commands.
  238.      *  Several improvements have been made regarding data files:
  239.        VINST now creates ".VDI" files for storing installation, options, and 
  240.   menubar information -- useful when updating to a new version of VDE.
  241.        VINST now creates ".VDC" files for storing character width data.  
  242.   These, and the ".VDG" files for graphics, can now also be accessed from VDE 
  243.   using the AltU command or command-line semicolon syntax.
  244.        Since printer drivers have changed several times recently, VINST can 
  245.   read .VDP files from versions 1.52 through 1.6 as well.  (VDE cannot, so 
  246.   write them back to disk with VINST before trying to use them with VDE.)
