I've had mine for about 8 months now with nary a problem. I purchased
the box by mail order from KCS in Arlington at the recommendation of a
friend.
I've been running OS/2 on it since September without too many (one)
problems.
I like it. I'd say... "go for it" but then, I also haven't seen a
DX2-66 either. I've heard that these machines are a bit faster but
no-one I know can tell me how (either subjectively or objectively)...

What's the data transfer rate? That tells a lot more than merely
moving the head to a disk location. I've grown to distrust the
"performance index" reported by some programs...seems they are based on
old XT architecture.

Hi, network!
Long ago, I bought a CMS21plus hardcard and I remember it claimed to be
XT/AT compatible. The hard disk is now in limbo but I would like to use
the controller to drive another MFM hard disk on an XT I'm trying to
upgrade to AT.
Did anyone do thing more wiser than I and keep the booklet of this
hardcard? I would just need to know the jumper functions.
Thanks a lot.

You could always use DOS's ICA ("Intra-Application Communications
Area"). Per Norton's Programmer's Guide, "The ICA is a 16-byte
reserved area from locations 4F0 through 4FF that is used to store data
that can be shared by several different programs."
No, your 300 character parameter wouldn't fit there. But a FAR pointer
to that parameter sure would!
I don't know what rules have been worked out on using the ICA (e.g.,
how to check if anyone *else* is using it, etc. Long long ago I did a
wee little demo (TOAD_IAC.PAS on SIMTEL20) on how to use this. Hadn't
heard much about its usage since then. Maybe something in Ralph
Brown's famous Interrupt list?

Two approaches come to mind:
1 - A fast fgrep of SIMTEL20's archives reveals:
PD1:<MSDOS.DSKUTL>
RMDRIV20.ZIP Disable or enable any DOS logical disk drive
So .. you could run that. Except that wouldn't keep anyone from
rebooting the system off a floppy.
So ... if you're running AT-type machines (with a CMOS that contains
the system setup):
2 - Get public domain software that saves and restores CMOS data. Save
the current setup (e.g., with hard drive and floppies) to a file.
Maybe an encrypted file to keep those snoopy students out, eh? On the
hard disk, natch, because Real Soon Now you're not gonna HAVE any
floppies, ok?
Go into setup (via running program, via Delete key during boot,
however). Change setup so you don't HAVE any floppies. Exit to DOS,
save THAT setup (e.g., no floppies) to a separate file (encrypted
again).
Now, whenever you want full access, run CMOS restore software to
write the "full setup" back to CMOS and reboot.
When the students are coming in, run CMOS restore software to write
the "hard drive only setup" to CMOS and reboot.
What CMOS software? Again, at SIMTEL20 (and probably elsewhere):
PD1:<MSDOS.AT>
CMOS14.ZIP CMOS v1.4: Saves/restores CMOS to/from file
CMOSER11.ZIP 386/286 enhanced CMOS setup program
CMOSRAM.ZIP Save AT/386/486 CMOS data to file and restore
ROM2.ARC Save AT and 386 CMOS data to file and restore
SETUP21.ARC Setup program which modifies CMOS RAM
I use CMOS14 myself (although not for anything like this.)
What encryption software? Well, that opens a can of worms, what with
the US Customs regulations and all. If I told you, I'd have to shoot
you.
But you might consider the password protection available in PKZIP :-)
Assuming the Feds let Phil export it :-)
Hope this helps.

Can anybody tell me if and where I could find versions of the following
running under Windows 3.1?
-TeX 3.1x (I currently use SB38TEX and TEXAS10 under DOS, do they work
under Windows 3.1, does anything else?)
-Red Eyes Software dvips (I currently use the DOS 386 version)
-Metafont (I currently use SB13MF, version may be wrong).
I must know the answer for planning purposes before I can purchase and
install Windows 3.1 on my machine. This is why I ask instead of trying.
( I am not in my home Institution at this time...)
In the SIMTEL20 <MSDOS.TEX> directory I found a Previewer running under
Windows. Any user report would be welcome (works? fast? user friendly?
not limited to short built in font set? etc...)

Subject: How to insert control characters (V93 #20)
p.farry@ucq.edu.au (Paul Farry) asked how to insert control characters.
I understand he means Escapes, escape codes used with loaded ANSI.SYS
to force colour changes on the screen. The ESC is the only control
character necessary here. It's ascii value is 27.
It depends on the editor one uses how to insert them within the text.
Some editors accept Alt-27 (having Alt pressed down press the 2 and 7
keys on the numeric keypad and release the Alt key). The control
character may be visible as a left arrow.
EDLIN accepts it by entering ^V[, that is hold down the Ctrl key, press
V, release the Ctrl key and press the [ key. If listing the line in
which it was entered the code is visible as ^[.
For example to set a red colour on a black background one should insert
the code ESC[31;40m within the ascii text (^[[31;40m) and to reset all
colours to normal the code would be ESC[0m. For further details one
should consult the DOS manual under the ANSI.SYS part.
Regards - Jim.

Why do you want to use 800x600 when the card is capable of
1280x1024x256 or 1600x1200x64 grayscale - all NonInterlaced. Don't
think it emulates XGA, since XGA is later than the IA/A, but it CAN

You get them from Orchid Technology's BBS. I've downloaded the Windows
drivers and they seem to work fairly well. They don't, and never will,
have drivers for OS/2 1.3. They were supposed to release the drivers
for OS/2 2.0 a while ago (I haven't gone up to 2.0, yet, so I haven't
been interested). The number is:
(510) 683-0237 (2400 Baud) or (510) 683-0555 (9600 Baud) 8bit, 1stop,
No parity.
You could also call their Tech Support hotline at (510) 683-0323 and
pay to have them mail you a diskette with the drivers.

There are many POP mail clients. I only look at the universityware

For the original POPmail programs for PeeCees & Macs, try ftp'g to
boombox.micro.umn.edu in the /pub/pc directory for PeeCees. This
directory also has the packet drivers for the various EtherNet cards.
But, I like Eudora for the PC (see announcement below). I've used the

on the mail server - important to some folks. It also has numerous
other options that allow it to exist in a PeeCee and Mac environment.
PC Eudora is new (re: version 1.0) and is for Windows 3.1. Its one of
the best first addition programs I've seen. I encourage you Windows
3.1 folks to try it.

Eudora and documentation are best obtained by anonymous ftp to

Alternate sites will undoubtedly become available, currently,
ftp.cso.uiuc.edu will also be mirroring the programs.

I used Norton Utilities to Unfragment my disk and now when I

an error message stating that the program did something illegal and
violated system security and that I should quit Windows and reboot my
system. Some of these applications print a few large characters on the

control. My Windows applications all seem to run okay.
I am running DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 on a 80386-25 with
16Mbytes of memory and 300Mbytes of disk. I used Norton Utilities 6.0
to do the Unfragment. I have tried restoring that disk from tape (I
had backed it up just before doing the unfragment) but that didn't fix
the problem. I will eventually reinstall Windows and see if that fixes
it, but then I would have to reinstall fonts and do other tedious
tweeking to bring the system back to its former setup, so I'd rather do
something less drastic if possible.
If anyone could help me solve this problem, I would really
appreciate it.
