  23.         When the Norfolk Corporation began commercial sand operations near
  24. Pinehurst, North Carolina in the early 1920's they laid the foundation for a
  25. remarkable undertaking. In the process of excavating sand to be used for such
  26. projects as the construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway, they molded and carved
  27. their "sand mine" into a canyon of mounds and pits.
  28.         Norwood and Linwood Pleasant took over this site in 1948 and continued
  29. their operations until 1975, after which time the land lay virtually unused.
  30.         In 1984, second generation golf cource architect Dan Maples saw in this
  31. property the potential for a truly unusual and spectacular golf course. After
  32. careful planning and design, bulldozers were brought in and the shaggy dunes
  33. were transformed into emerald fairways, and in 1985 this former sand pit
  34. became one of the country's most talked about and challenging golf courses.
