README82.TXT
December, 1992
To all Sysops whose systems are listed on SOCAL.LiST:
TO MY KNOWLEDGE, NO ONE HAS YET COME up with a satisfactory explanation as to
why we sysops operate these Computer Bulletin Boards. Obviously, of course,
there are a number of multi-line or special-purpose systems running that
actually are profitable, but I am certain that mine (and probably yours) isn't
one of them.
I DO KNOW THAT I MAINTAIN SOCAL BBS as a hobby primarily, because I enjoy the
satisfaction of providing some of the pleasure and services that the average BBS
has to offer. I have been running my BBS since October of 1988, starting on a
two-floppy Kaypro II and advancing (a bit) to the current PC running DOS.
AT ANY RATE, MAINTAINING THE BBS isn't a terribly expensive operation;
maintaining SOCAL.LiST, unfortunately, is. There are currently more then 1500
entries on the current LIST; some releases have been delayed by the difficulty
I have incurred trying to verify many of the numbers. In fact, between the
time involved and long distance charges, maintaining the LIST has become a
significant burden.
YET, FOR UNFATHOMABLE REASONS SIMILAR to those mentioned above, I remain
desireous and willing to continue publishing the LIST. However, as we all know,
money talks, and it is time to find out how much you sysops are desireous and
willing to have me continue publishing.
THEREFORE, FOR THE DUAL MOTIVES OF providing fair compensation for costs and
labor involved in the upkeep of the LIST, as well as providing a means of
"thinning out" (hopefully not to the point of extinction!) the number of BBSs
listed herein, I have decided to institute a yearly subscribtion charge for
inclusion in the LIST.
EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1ST, 1993, ALL ENTRIES currently featured in SOCAL.LiST will
be placed on a "trial status". The LIST will be maintained as it is for four
more months. With the release of the MAY, 1993, edition, only those systems
whose sysops have sent the requested subscription fee will remain on the LIST.
THE SUBSCRIPTION RATE WILL BE FIVE DOLLARS ($5.00) for one year (i.e., to the
end of 1993) and each calendar year thereafter. I MUST receive a check, money
order, or cash by mail by MAY 1ST, 1993 in order for a system to remain listed.
Please make checks or M.O.'s payable to SOCAL CORNER.
IN ADDITION, HENCEFORTH, I will accept listing information FROM THE CURRENT OR
PROSPECTIVE sysop of a given system ONLY; I very much have always appreciated
information that has been received from users but, with the imposition of the
subscription system I will accept new BBS information from these sources by
mail or updates to subscribing system sysops directly by modem.
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, IF I AM able to continue to publish the LIST, then you
sysops will be seeing regular monthly, completely-verified releases. In ad-
dition, to offset costs of uploading update information to my BBS, I will con-
vert to a toll-free "800" number and a faster modem.
HOPEFULLY, ENOUGH OF YOU SYSOPS WILL realize the value of this LIST and of its
extensive circulation. I have been told that it does command a fair amount of
respect; I hope that I will be able to continue publishing the LIST even after
initiation of these reasonable subscription charges. Thank you for your sup-
port...
