  1. Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend is the oldest child of Robert and Ethel
  2. Kennedy.  She is currently making a bid for the congressional seat in her
  3. district in Maryland.  Her campaign stresses community service.  She is an
  4. ardent feminist and social activist.  She is the first Kennedy woman to continue
  5. the political legacy of her family.

  7. Kathleen is a graduate of Harvard University where she met her husband David Lee
  8. Townsend, then a doctoral student in English and American history there. After
  9. their marriage in 1973 they moved to New Mexico where David taught classics and
  10. Kathleen attended Law School.  They returned to Boston and both completed law
  11. degrees at Yale University.

  13. Kathleen has taught English to Navaho children and worked with Eskimos in Alaska
  14. as well as campaigning for George McGovern's presidential bid and as campaign
  15. director for her Uncle Ted's Senate race.
