Edward M. Kennedy is the only surviving Kennedy brother. Following family
tradition, he graduated from Harvard University. After receiving a law degree
from the University of Virginia, he worked on JFK's campaign. In 1962, at age
30, he won the Massachussets Senate seat once held by JFK. With one brother the
President and the other the Attorney General, Teddy's political future seemed
assured. After Bobby's assassination in 1968, Teddy became a substitute father
to Bobby's children and the focal point of the Kennedy family: the one to carry
on the political legacy. The 1969 Chappaquidick Island incident, resulting in
the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, ended his presidential possibilities for the 1972
election. He is currently (1988) a U. S. Senator from Massachusetts.
