Because they are the children of a president and his popular wife, Caroline and
John Kennedy evoke national interest. As genealogists, however, our interest
is in their antecedents - their family histories. This book is created using
the Roots III "Reverse Register" Plan which proceeds through the ancestral
lines in the same manner as research is done,
progressing from the known to the unknown, from the present to the past.
Published genealogies usually begin with the earliest known ancestor, coming
down through the generations to contemporary times. However, a family history
prepared in the Reverse Register format is more easily understood by the layman
and is particularly good for getting children interested in their histories.

Although Caroline and John are no longer children, they were only preschoolers
when their father was assassinated; thus, they were deprived of the opportunity
to learn of their Kennedy-Fitzgerald families from their father.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy's election to the presidency was a culmination of the
political traditions in both his mother and father's families. From poor
immigrant to the White House through local, state and national politics took
only four generations. The Kennedy wealth was accumulated by Caroline and
John's grandfather, Joseph, whose political ambitions took him to an
ambassadorial post. Joseph's father, Patrick Joseph, came up from the ranks of
trade (he is listed on the 1880 census as a brass finisher) to serve in both
the Massachusetts House and Senate. Even before Joseph Kennedy married the
beautiful Rose Fitzgerald, their families had been tied together through ward
politics in Boston. In fact for a time Patrick Joseph and John "Honey Fitz"
were adversaries in the Democratic machine. "Honey Fitz" served in Congress
and was later mayor of Boston.

Due to space considerations, this report traces Caroline and John's
ancestors only to Rose and Joseph Kennedy. By comparing the material in the
Register/Record Plan presented earlier in this book, you can see how
the same data can be manipulated for different presentations with ROOTS III.
