│ DESCRIPTION │
└───────────────────────────────┘
Have you ever wanted to give your BBS callers a real nice catalog
to use offline? Ever had Users complain of the hassles of using text
editors and file lister/viewer utilities with BBS Library file
listings that quite typically run 1-5 megs on most decent sized BBSs?
Wanted to improve the image of your BBS to your callers? And if you
had such a nice offline user catalog, wouldn't it be nice to punch a
few keys and have it built right off your BBS?
RMS Catalog version 3.47 meets those needs in a superb way! It was
originally designed by me for use on my own BBS back in 1991. After
lots of good customer compliments and many very nice enhancements,
it is now being made available on a Shareware basis ("Try Before
You Buy") to other BBSs.
While specifically designed for PCBoard BBS systems, it can be used
with most any other BBS System using text files to contain listings
of filenames/sizes/descriptions on files available for download.
(See Technical Section)
RMS Catalog has very colorful menus, complete with scrolling
windows, highlight bars, File Directory selection from popup
windows, Single File Directory(s) and Entire Catalog Printing
features, Search features across Single Directories or the Entire
Catalog, super Picklist* features, ability to include your own BBS
information screens and advertisements. It can handle single-line
file descriptions or multiple-line file descriptions on each of
your library's files. RMS Catalog currently can support up to 255
Files of Listings and Descriptions information. Each of these can in
turn contain up to 3000 lines of Filenames and summary or detailed
file descriptions. RMS Catalog supports foreign language files PCB
style. And lots more packed features! Requires: 640k and Color
monitor for RMS User Catalog.
RMSBUILD V1.4 is a super tool to accompany RMS Catalog. It is menu-
driven. It can use your PCBoard DIR files and DIR.LST files and
automatically and quickly build your RMS User Catalog. You can use
it to build full-scale catalogs of multi-megs, and then quickly
use it to build small catalogs that can run on a floppy disk!
If you are using text files from another BBS System, you can manually
enter the full path name(s) of your Listings files in an RMSBuild
Tools file and then use RMSBuild to build the RMS User Catalog
automatically from that point! (See Installation Section)

│ INSTALLATION │
└───────────────────────────────┘
Here it is. Short and simple. Follow these instructions and you
will be up and operational in short order on both the Sysop Catalog
Build Program and the RMS User Catalog Program. The programs are
very straight-forward in usage and quick to learn how to use.
1. Unzip the files in a separate subdirectory. Use a name such
as RMS. It can be on any hard drive on your system.
2. Using your favorite ASCII text editor, edit the file: LOGO
a) File width: LOGO *must* be less than 78 chars wide
b) This is your BBS logo/ad screen for Print features in the
RMS User Catalog. Any Ascii characters permissible.
c) Use of box and ASCII characters > 127 does not print out as
such on some dot matrix printers. Printers which can emulate
IBM mode will be able to print them, however.
3. Using your favorite ASCII text editor, edit the file: INFO
a) Required file width : 78 characters exactly
Required lines per Box : 24
All text must be inside the Boxes.
Please RETAIN the Box characters and use the templates!
b) # of Boxes to use is Sysop's choice. Delete all Boxes that
you do not wish to use. Block copy more boxes with your
editor, if you need more.
c) This is the BBS Information that is displayed to the User
in option #1 of the offline RMS User Catalog.
4. Edit the RMS.CFG file
Line #1: Enter Your BBS name (Max of 30 chars, Case-Sensitive)
Line #2: Enter Your alphanumeric Serial # we send you after you
register. If unregistered, this line should be 000000000000.
Line #3: Y or N. Foreign Language File Attached?
Line #4: Foreign Language File Extension.
5. The Build Directory Information File: RMS.DIR
To Build Automatically
a) Run the RMSBLD.Exe program
1) Choose menu item #1.
2) Specify your PCB DIR.LST file to the RMSBuild Pgm prompt.
Specify either Append or New for the RMS.DIR output file.
Hit the Esc key at the prompt to abort, if necessary.
3) RMSBLD reads the DIR.LST file specified. Builds RMS.DIR
4) Each DIR file can have up to 3000 lines currently.
5) To edit the Build List, simply execute Option #2 and use
the Function Keys to Add to or Delete from the List.

the File with the User Catalog Pgm to make sure things fit
on the screens. (Yes, sometimes its tight squeezing things in.)

1) Choose menu item #3 and build the User Catalog.
b) Zip up the Required User Catalog Files
1) RMS.EXE 4) RMS.CFG 7) The Foreign Language File

┌───────────────────────────────┐
│ UNREGISTERED PGM NOTICE │
└───────────────────────────────┘
The RMSBuild program will show an "Unregistered" message on the
top of the Main Menu screen. Program functionality is not affected
in any way. Once registered, this top line will show your BBS
Name instead.
The RMS Catalog (for your users) will show a similar Unregistered
message, plus it will show an unregistered screen upon program exit.
Hitting the enter key allows the program to finish its exit.
Your Registration will likewise replace the first with a "Registered"
to:" and your name notice, plus disable the exit reminder screen.
Our registration fee is very inexpensive for software of this type.
Please support the shareware concept by registering the product
with us. Thank you.

│ TECHNICAL: OTHER BBS SYSTEMS FILES │
└────────────────────────────────────┘
While we make no warranties of the programs usability on other BBS
systems other than PCBoard, RMS Catalog has certain fundamental
capabilities if its required conditions are met.
NOTES:
1. Your Files that contain the BBS File names and descriptions
would need to be ASCII files, with a maximum width of 78
characters used. RMS Catalog will actually read in slightly
wider text files, but it will truncate things off at the PCB
standard of 78 characters.
For RBBS systems, our BBS has a utility program that will convert
RBBS files to PCB DIRxxx format files in a work directory of your
choice. It is available for download. These DIRxxx files could
then be referenced in the RMS.DIR file and used instead for the
automatic catalog building option #2 in RMSBUILD.
2. IMPORTANT! These Ascii File Directories Listing should *NOT* use
column #1 on SECONDARY description lines!
3. You can manually build RMS.DIR to list the DIR File names
and Descriptions. Then when the Catalog Build option is executed,
the system will go out and read your Files and Build the User
Catalog.
In theory, everything should go well, if you respect RMS Catalog's
requirements. But since we only a PCBoard system, we are unable
to do any hard QA testing using RBBS, Wildcat, Spitfire or other
BBS files.

│ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS │
└───────────────────────────────┘
I wish to thank all those individuals who helped us test out these
programs. Our offline User Catalog program has been in use for callers
to our BBS since 1991 and has gone through a number of enhancements
and significant improvements during that time. At each stage we have
been very appreciative of those who helped test out the programs.
Secondly, I wish to thank my wife and son for their patience as their
father was working on these programs and on his BBS.
Lastly, acknowledgement is made to the PCBoard folks, Clark Development
Corporation, for the very fine BBS system that they make.
