Digital Sound and Music Interface
Until now, the PC sound world has suffered from lousy
MOD players that eat up processor power and don't
deliver high quality sound. On the era of 16-bit, CD-
quality sound cards, we are still forced to use 8-bit
sound even though those sound cards could provide a
lot more. Most players are also limited to four channels,
some even give you eight, but then you have to give up
quality. None of them give you the possibility to use
sound effects. DSMI is different.
As I started this project in early 1992, I had a clear
goal: a system capable of playing music with simultaneous
sound effects. This meant giving up the old four-channel
thinking and creating a new, expandable system, that
would support as many channels as needed. And now, almost
a year later, that goal is within reach, not just for
me, but for all PC coders.
DSMI, pronounced 'DISMI', is a commercial product for
creating high quality music and sounds in your programs.
Most of you have already touched it in the form of DMP,
the famous Dual Module Player, but it's much more than
that. Here is a list of some of its features:
* Supports following sound cards:
- Sound Blaster 1.0 - 2.0
- Sound Blaster Pro (stereo)
- Pro Audio Spectrum+ (stereo)
- Pro Audio Spectrum 16 (16-bit, stereo)
- Sound Blaster 16 ASP (16-bit, stereo)
(also Gravis Ultra Sound in the future)
* Up to 32 simultaneous channels
* Plays MODs, STMs and many other formats
* Two operating modes for 8-bit cards:
- Fast mode
- Quality mode (better sound quality)
* Special 16-bit support, which means GREAT sound quality
on 16-bit cards
* Very extensive programming interface that lets YOU
decide what to do
* Modular structure means easier upgrades (e.g. new
sound cards)
* Printed manual (estimated size is about 70-80 A4-pages)
* Example programs
* Utilizes 386 instruction mix to reach maximum
performance, 286 NOT supported :-(
* Free 'Timer Service'-pack for easy timer handling
* Comes in 'C & Assembler' and 'Pascal' versions
* All C (or Pascal) source code is included for
recompiling or changing (yes, that means DMP too!)
* One FREE major upgrade
And last but not the least:
* DSMI IS DEFINETELY THE FASTEST PLAYER ON EARTH!!
Ok, now that I got you all drooling I have to tell you
that it's NOT READY... Well, the code is actually
in shape, but it's still in beta-test, and the manual
is only half ready. So you'll have to wait until late-
February... I'm really sorry for the delay.
Do you still remember I mentioned the word 'commercial'
in the beginning? That means you have to pay me a
little money before you can have your own licence to
use DSMI. Yes, that's right, I'm selling licences, not
copies, which let you use DSMI in all your
NON-COMMERICAL products without restrictions, but if you
are planning to do a commerical product, you'll have to
contact me.
I suppose you are all eager to hear the price of this
product... How about 270mk (or 70USD)? But don't
send me any money yet, I'll inform you all when DSMI is
ready and for sale.
