  3.     Welcome to PPCS!  This file tells how to get going with PPCS quickly, or
  4.     how to update your program from an earlier version.
  5.  
  6.     To update quickly extract the files as described under QUICK INSTALLATION
  7.     and then proceed to the section called QUICK UPDATE.
  8.  
  9.     To get started quickly the steps in this file are outlined below:

  11.     1. Follow the quick installation routine below
  12.  
  13.     2. Print the User's Manual as described below
  14.  
  15.     3. This is a Share Ware program. Please read the license and registration
  16.        requirements in the User's Manual sections
  17.  
  18.     4. Read the Big Picture Overview

  20.     ***** QUICK INSTALLATION
  21.     ***************************************************************************

  23.     PPCS is provided in a self extracting file of the format PPCxxx.EXE where
  24.     xxx is the version number.
  25.  
  26.     If PPCS was down loaded from a computer bulletin board it may also be
  27.     compressed and placed in a .ZIP .ARC or similar file. Place the compressed
  28.     file in a convenient directory on your hard disk drive other than the root
  29.     directory.  Decompress the down loaded file using appropriate procedures
  30.     for your system.
  31.  
  32.     If you are installing PPCS from a distribution diskette it is installed as
  33.     follows: Place the installation diskette in an available drive which will
  34.     usually be either "A" or "B". Select the drive in which the diskette is
  35.     placed by entering: "A:" and press the enter key.  (On some machines the
  36.     <Enter> key may also be labeled <Return>.)  Then copy the compressed self
  37.     extracting file into a convenient directory of your choosing on the hard
  38.     disk which will be designated as \ZZZ:

  40.                     A:\COPY PPCxxx.EXE C:\ZZZ
  41.  
  42.     Place the PPCxxx.EXE self extracting file in a directory by itself. Set
  43.     the current directory to the directory in which it resides:
  44.  
  45.                     C:\CD\ZZZ
  46.  
  47.     Extract the files by typing the file name (the xxx should be replaced with
  48.     the file version number) and pressing <Enter>:
  49.  
  50.                     C:\PPCxxx  <Enter>
  51.  
  52.     The decompressed files will be placed in the current directory after the
  53.     extraction is complete. (Do not try to run PPCS from this directory.)
  54.  
  55.     To install PPCS type "INSTALL" followed by a space and the letter of the
  56.     drive on which the program is to be installed. As this will usually be "C"
  57.     drive it will be so assumed for the rest of this discussion and the entry
  58.     should look like this:

  60.                     C:\INSTALL C <Enter>
  61.  
  62.     This command will automatically install the program on drive "C" in
  63.     directory "C:\PPCS" and a small batch start up file "PPCS.BAT" will be
  64.     placed in the root directory "C:\".
  65.  
  66.     When the file installation is complete PPCS will initiate a start up
  67.     sequence that consists of seven screens that provided details for basic
  68.     program configuration.  Follow the instructions on the screen.  At the
  69.     last screen save the configuration entered as instructed.

  71.     A shareware and registration screen will then be displayed. Print a copy
  72.     ot the Registration form by pressing <Y>.  Then press any other key to
  73.     display the title and password screen. If a password was selected you must
  74.     enter it exactly and press <Enter>.  If no password was entered just press
  75.     enter and the program Main Menu will be displayed.

  77.     This will install the program files and demonstration files in the \PPCS
  78.     directory.

  80.     ***** PRINT THE PPCS USER'S MANUAL:

  83.     The User's Manual is included in a file called PPCS.DOC.  It can be
  84.     printed using the DOS PRINT command.  Set the directory to the directory
  85.     in which PPCS.DOC resides. Then enter the command to print the manual as
  86.     follows:

  88.                      C:\PRINT PPCS.DOC
  89.  
  90.     For more information on the print command refer to your DOS User's Guide
  91.     and Reference Manual.

  93.     ***** HOW TO START PPCS:
  94.     **************************************************************************
  95.     Start PPCS by entering "PPCS" and pressing the enter key:

  97.                       C:\PPCS <Enter>
  98.  
  99.     This will start the Professional Photo Catalog System Program. If the
  100.     program has not been registered a shareware and registration screen will
  101.     appear.  Press any key other then <Y> to proceed. A title, copyright, and
  102.     password screen will be displayed and a password will be requested if one
  103.     has been entered. If no password has been entered just press <Enter>, and
  104.     the Main Menu will be displayed. If a password is installed it will be
  105.     necessary to enter the password before pressing <Enter>.  The password
  106.     must be entered exactly using capital letters and small letters.  These
  107.     letters will not be displayed as they are entered for security.

  109.     ***** REGISTRATION, DISCLAIMER, AGREEMENT, AND LIMITATIONS
  110.  
  111.     The registration form may be printed from the shareware screen displayed
  112.     on program start up by entering a <Y>.  Please print and complete the
  113.     registration form.  A copy is also provided at the front of this Users
  114.     Manual.  When I receive your registration and the applicable fee I will
  115.     send instructions for disabling the shareware screen.
  116.  
  117.     Users of the Professional Photo Catalog System must accept this disclaimer
  118.     of warranty: "The Professional Photo Catalog System is supplied as is. The
  119.     author disclaims all warranties, expressed or implied, including, without
  120.     limitation, the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any
  121.     purpose. The author assumes no liability for damages, direct or
  122.     consequential, which may result from the use of the Action Management
  123.     System."

  125.     The Professional Photo Catalog System is a "shareware program" and is
  126.     provided at no charge to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it
  127.     with your friends, but do not give it away altered or as part of another
  128.     system. Such shared copies must be in the compressed self extracting file
  129.     that includes all the unaltered files that it contains.
  130.  
  131.     The concept of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
  132.     users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide an
  133.     incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products.  If you
  134.     find this program useful and find that you are using the Professional
  135.     Photo Catalog System and continue to use the Professional Photo Catalog
  136.     System after a reasonable trial period, you must make the registration
  137.     payment.  The registration fee will license one copy for use on any one
  138.     computer at any one time.  Treat this software just like a book.  This
  139.     software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
  140.     one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
  141.     being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a
  142.     book cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.

  144.     Users of the Professional Photo Catalog System must register and pay for
  145.     their copies of the Professional Photo Catalog System within 30 days.
  146.  
  147.     Evaluation copies of the Professional Photo Catalog System may be
  148.     distributed provided the cost is $10.00 or less and the program is
  149.     distributed in an unmodified form as described above.  This is not to be
  150.     construed as representing the registration fee which must still be paid as
  151.     described above.

  153.     You are encouraged to pass a copy of the Professional Photo Catalog System
  154.     along to your friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register
  155.     their copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users will
  156.     receive a copy of the latest version of the the Professional Photo Catalog
  157.     System system.

  159.     ***** THE BIG PICTURE

  162.     Read section 2.0 of the User's Manual or Help Module B as they describe
  163.     the management framework in which PPCS is to be used.  This is just as
  164.     important as learning how to use the computer program and will have a
  165.     strong bearing on the successful implementation of the system.  Section
  166.     3.0 includes a brief tutorial using demonstration files that will provide
  167.     a look at PPCS reports and provide hands on experience using PPCS.
  168.     Section 5.0 provides a detailed description of the main program functions.
  169.     Skim this section to learn where to find the details.  Section 4.0, 6.0,
  170.     7.0, and the Appendices provide material for future reference as PPCS is
  171.     used. And of course read 1.4 on registration and legal stuff!

  173.     ***** QUICK UPDATE
  174.     ***************************************************************************

  176.     If not already completed extract the files in a directory separate from
  177.     the \PPCS directory in which PPCS is installed.
  178.  
  179.     To update PPCS type "UPDATE" followed by a space and the letter of the
  180.     drive on which the program is to be installed. As this will usually be "C"
  181.     drive it will be so assumed for the rest of this discussion and the entry
  182.     should look like this:

  184.                           C:\UPDATE C <Enter>
  185.  
  186.     This program will copy the new files into the \PPCS directory over the old
  187.     program files but will not heart any data entered under a previous version
  188.     of PPCS.  Then start the program as normal and the appropriate changes
  189.     will be incorporated automatically upon the first program start up.

  191.     A brief review of the version changes is included in the file PPCS.REV.
  192.     This file should bring you up to date with the new changes in this version
  193.     of PPCS.
