  22.         Frequently data imported via GEDCOM files includes records that
  23.         match data you already have.  These matching records may be merged
  24.         with the Match/Merge capability of PAF.  There is a problem,
  25.         however, when there are several records that appear very similar
  26.         in the imported file, but by research you have narrowed it down to
  27.         a single record.  If you ask PAF to "Find the next match", and you
  28.         are going through 150 John Smiths, it can take a long time.  The
  29.         ID number is the ideal way to specify a particular record.

  31.         PAF provides a way to assign Ahnentafel numbers as IDs to all
  32.         records in a database, but each database will have the same set of
  33.         numbers assigned to different records.  George Smith may be ID.123
  34.         in the Smith database, and Fred Brown ID.123 in the Brown
  35.         database.  AUTOID will assign unique IDs to all data and eliminate
  36.         worry about duplication between databases.

  38.         The ANANAN system, used for Canadian Postal Codes, is used for the
  39.         IDs assigned by AUTOID.  ANANAN codes consist of alternating alpha
  40.         and numeric characters.  In AUTOID the user supplies the first two
  41.         characters, and the computer supplies the remaining 4.  This
  42.         enables the user to have up to 260 sets  of over 65,000 codes
  43.         each.  ANANAN has an additional advantage in that it is very easy
  44.         to verify what character is in what place.  "I" and "1", "O" and
  45.         "0", and sometimes even "H" and "4" can get confused.  Because
  46.         only the first, third, and fifth characters are letters, and only
  47.         the other three are numbers, you can determine which a particular
  48.         character is by its placement.
