  21.         AHNENTAF is a program to make an ahnentafel from a PAF data base. 
  22.         Its style is only slightly different, but in the opinion of the
  23.         author, more usable than PAF's ahnentafel. For example, AHNENTAF
  24.         puts the surname first, making it easier to scan for names. 
  25.         AHNENTAF will also fill in the information on duplicated lines,
  26.         while PAF says "same as ahnentafel number nnnn". The output is
  27.         similar to ahentafels published in genealogical magazines.

  29.         The word "ahnentafel" comes from the German, "ahnen"  meaning
  30.         ancestors and "tafel" meaning table.  As used today, it refers to
  31.         a numbering system for the ancestors of a person.  The starting
  32.         person is given the number 1.  The father is 2, and the mother is
  33.         3.  Number 2's father is 4 and his mother is 5.  Number 3's father
  34.         is 6 and her mother is 7.  Double any person's number to get
  35.         his/her father's number.  Double any person's number and add one
  36.         to get his/her mother's number.  After the first generation, the
  37.         men have even numbers, and the women have  odd numbers.

  39.         The information contained in an ahnentafel can be as short as a
  40.         name or as long as a paragraph.  Because an ahnentafel is a list,
  41.         rather than a chart, it can be very compact.  Many pages of four
  42.         generation pedigrees can be printed on just a few pages in the
  43.         ahnentafel format.

  45.         The information provided in this version includes birth date and
  46.         place, death date  and place, and marriage date and place.  If
  47.         birth and  death data are not available, baptism and burial data
  48.         are substituted if possible.  The layout is designed for
  49.         ahnentafel numbers up to seven digits long.  This allows for only
  50.         23 generations as opposed to PAF's 32 generations.
