  32.         Descended from many generations of pack-rats, the author had old
  33.         wills, land deeds, and diaries that make mention of relatives not
  34.         in my direct line (Aunt Sarah, Uncle Abe, Aunt Anna, Cousin
  35.         Charlie, etc.)  Who are these people???  How do they fit into the
  36.         picture???  Not one genealogy program seemed to provide a quick
  37.         and easy way to show all of great-grandma's close relatives, even
  38.         if their data had been entered.  Family Viewer was written to fill
  39.         that gap.

  41.         Family Viewer is not a general purpose genealogy database program. 
  42.         Although it uses its own data structures, this data CANNOT be
  43.         changed and can ONLY be entered by reading in a GEDCOM file
  44.         generated by some other program such as PAF.
  45.  
  46.         For convenience, Family Viewer allows you to preview a GEDCOM file
  47.         without having to convert and save the data.  This would be useful
  48.         if you want to see how large it is and what family names are
  49.         included.  the program will read the file displaying the number of
  50.         individuals, families and family names.  When finished, it will
  51.         display a list box of all the family names.

  53.         When names are entered, they are converted into 'metaphs' to be
  54.         used for searching.  A metaph is similar to a soundex code, but it
  55.         uses only letters instead of letters and numbers.  (See Metaphone
  56.         algorithm, Lawrence Philips, Computer Language magazine, Dec 90)

  58.         Photographs, maps, coats-of-arms, or any document that can be put
  59.         into a graphics file using the 'PCX' format can be attached to a
  60.         person, along with a comment, and displayed by this program.
