ABOUT FILE FORMATS AND WHAT THEY MEAN TO YOUR PROJECT:
TutorialWriter was designed to execute .voi files directly from inside it
self in order to simplify the process for you. In order to accomplish this
TutorialWriter needs the .voi files to be small enough to fit, so the .voi
file itself is clipped and crunched to enable the size to be very small and
to also conserve diskette space if you are planning to play your finished
tutorial from a diskette. The offset to this process is the sound quality.
Because the .voi file is processed this way, the sound quality is limited.
For many phrase's and applications this may be satisfactory.
The High Quality format is not to be compared to the above format. See for
yourself by listening to the "CUSTOM.EXE" file included with this sample
package. In applications where a higher quality phrase is required, you can
still have TutorialWriter execute it from your tutorial or quiz. Instead of
the #V command you would use the #U command. As a test on your tutorial or
quiz install a command line like this #Ucustom.exe and see how simple it
is. It really depends on the quality of voice sound you need, as to which
of the formats are best suited for your project.
FORMATS AND SPACE:
As mentioned earlier TutorialWriter format is very small in size in regards
to the actual file size. The phrase "Thank You" many be about 2,500 bytes
in file size as compared to the same phrase in High Quality could be 30,000
bytes in size. The file included called "CUSTOM" is 218,000 bytes in size for
about 20 seconds of sound.
What does all this mean to you: If you are working on a tutorial that you
have set as a rule, that when given out you do not want your recipient to
have to transfer to a hard disk to play. (because the complete tutorial with
all the associated files require two diskettes) I always give out my
tutorials on a 3 1/2 inch diskette and low density (720,000 bytes) because
I use TutorialWriter for commercial purposes and do not know what computer
will be on the other end. By doing this in my case I am limited to a total of
720,000 bytes for everything. Because of this I choose to limit my high
quality files and mix them with the TutorialWriter format as a matter of
priority. When I have the Tutorial first boot up and say the companies name
I want the high quality to please the client. On the other hand for a simple
Phrase like "Thank You" the TutorialWriter format is just fine for me.
If you run everything from a hard disk or you have no problem instructing
to copy from diskettes to a hard than there really isn't an issue with the
file size's.
