Customary Plea for Bucks:
I fully realize that there are thousands, if not millions of these
cd-drives installed in an equal number of computers... therefore,
if I (as a Computer Technician) were to charge you for this, I'm
sure you would understand why. However, I can't get to all of you,
and you can't get to me, so just send me $5.00 for the headache I
saved you and we'll call it even.
===================================================================
It has been "claimed" that the Mitsumi CD-ROM cannot be daisy-chained,
this is not so. The key to this, is to avoid DMA and IRQ conflicts,
with other devices already installed in your system.
As of this writing, I am running 2 of these drives on my system, they're
drive D: and drive E:
The downside to this, is that you need a seperate expansion slot for
each controller card... and you MUST use Microsoft CD-ROM Extentions
v2.2 (the disk is label CD-ROM Device Driver v1.3). Later versions
that I tried this on, didn't work properly.
Also note that I have not been able to successfully load the drivers
"high" in QEMM's Optimize. The machine currently has 4 meg of ram. They
WILL load high, releasing an additional 77k of lower ram, but doing so,
results in "Invalid Drive Specification" messages from dos. In other
words, dos doesn't reconize (read) the cd-drives.
I don't, as yet, have a explaination for this, but 77k is not too much
to sacrifice for the advantages of an additional cd-drive.

If you don't know your system inside out, or aren't a technical
person, don't attempt this! - Get PROFESSIONAL assistance!
BACKUP YOUR "current" AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files to a BOOTABLE
floppy FIRST!! - DISASTERS can and do happen - BE PREPARED!!
IF this is NOT done right the FIRST time, your system will LOCK-UP
when you re-boot!! You'll need this disk to re-gain control!!
Installation Instructions
-------------------------
MAKE the BOOTABLE floppy, described above, BEFORE you continue!!
================================================================
Assuming that you have previously installed the Microsoft Extentions
software, using the default installation directories, and selected
DMA transfer, proceed as follows...
1) Configure "card #1" (first drive) to the factory defaults
(as came out of box)...
IRQ - 5 and CH - 3
SW1 settings (1-8) - 00000011 (address 300h)
2) Configure "card #2" (second drive) to the settings...
IRQ - 2 and CH - 1
SW1 settings (1-8) - 00100011 (address 310h)
* The CD-ROM manual lists the SW1 settings in REVERSE order! These
are "looking at the board" settings! (DipSwitch #1 on the left,
0=OFF and 1=ON).
3) Add/Edit the line below to your AUTOEXEC.BAT
\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /D:MSCD002
4) Add/Edit the following lines to your CONFIG.SYS
LASTDRIVE=Z (probably already there)
DEVICE=\DEV\MTMCDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:300 /A:0 /M:32 /T:3 /I:5
DEVICE=\DEV\MTMCDD.SYS /D:MSCD002 /P:310 /A:0 /M:32 /T:1 /I:2 /L:E

SPECIAL NOTES
-------------
* If you are installing both drives for the first time (in a new
installation) use the CD-ROM setup disk to install the software
drivers FIRST, then edit the 2 files as shown above.
* If you have 2 hard drives, and/or are using a "Stacker" type
utility, change the "E" in CONFIG.SYS's /L:E to the next available
drive letter.
In other words, set this to F (or whatever is appropiate) for your
system.
* Also note that depending upon your particular configuration, you may
have to experiment with (decrease) the "memory buffer" settings, to
achieve optimum performance.
* Some bios chips (such as the AMI) revector IRQ 2 as IRQ 9. My system
has this chip. This means that if IRQ 2 is already in use, (Desqview
uses this IRQ), the bios will automatically revector the second device
on IRQ 2 to IRQ 9. The result is that both devices run as they should,
even though the IRQ's would normally be in conflict. If your bios chip
supports IRQ 9 directly, and/or you purchased the Mitsumi "clone", you
may be able to use IRQ 9 directly on the controller card. Consult your
cd-drive's manual.
-------------
* Did you make that BOOTABLE floppy ???
-------------
5) Re-boot your system, if all went well, you should now have 2 cd drives
installed. If it didn't work, check the files you edited for proper
syntax, and your system for DMA/IRQ conflicts with other devices.
