NOVELL LICENSES LANALYZER TECHNOLOGY TO
NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS CORPORATION
NCC Acquires Novell's Hardware-Based LANalyzer Network
Analysis Product
Novell to Focus on LANalyzer for Windows Network Analyzer
SAN JOSE, CA -- February 8, 1993 -- Novell Inc. today
announced a licensing and technology agreement under which
Network Communications Corporation (NCC) acquires exclusive
rights to develop and market the hardware-based LANalyzer network analyzer.
In addition to the LANalyzer product, NCC also acquires
rights from Novell to use the LANalyzer registered trademark
for two years, as well as rights to and responsibilities for
all current LANalyzer sales, service and support. The
agreement includes the hardware-based LANalyzer only; Novell
will continue to develop and market its software-only
LANalyzer for Windows.
The two companies have shared technologies since September
1991, when they announced they would cooperate to combine LAN
and WAN analysis capabilities in a single testing instrument.
This agreement is the outcome of that relationship and of
Novell's continuing commitment to the software services
segment of the networking industry.
Navindra Jain, vice president and general manager of
Novell's Network Management and Internetworking Products
Division, said NCC's familiarity with LANalyzer puts them in
the best position to support current and future LANalyzer
customers. "This agreement assures customers that continued
development of and support for LANalyzer, one of the world's
leading network analyzers since 1986, is in the best possible
hands," said Jain. "NCC has established its technical
excellence in the WAN analysis field. They use many of the
same specialized resellers through whom LANalyzer has been
sold, and have the hardware expertise to continue evolving
this product.
"In addition, this agreement allows us to focus more
closely on software-based solutions for distributed network
management and analysis of the NetWare environment," Jain
added. "Through our NetWare Management System and LANalyzer
for Windows, we will continue to deliver the best possible
support to Novell's customers."
George Wood, president and chief executive officer of NCC,
said this agreement positions NCC to become the premier
supplier of LAN/WAN integrated testing platforms. "Novell is
an excellent company to partner with," Wood said. "We are
pleased to acquire the good name and excellent tradition that
Novell has established for the product. LANalyzer continues
to be the premier LAN analyzer on the market and it is a
natural product extension for NCC. Our customers are
continually moving forward with networking technology and the
acquisition of LANalyzer provides a clean convergence of
LAN/WAN internetwork integration that fits our customers
needs."
ABOUT LANALYZER
LANalyzer, a combination of specialized hardware and
analysis software, monitors network activity, diagnoses and
troubleshoots problems, and fine-tunes performance on
Ethernet or token-ring (4- and 16-Mbps) networks. It
captures 100 percent of network traffic, decodes all seven
protocol layers for 18 distinct networking environments, and
displays information about protocol errors, interfering
traffic, and the network's physical integrity.
Key features include the Automated Troubleshooting System,
a set of more than 175 pre-programmed testing applications
designed to troubleshoot common problems and perform
maintenance tasks. Tests are predefined; users select
criteria and parameters. LANalyzer also allows users to
develop their own customized testing routines.
LANalyzer captures 100 percent of network traffic, offers
configurable alarms and packet definitions, and simulates
network load conditions while simultaneously monitoring the
results. It automatically recognizes individual protocols,
offers real-time displays and stores analysis data for later
evaluation.
Network Communications Corporation (NCC) is a leading
supplier of wide area network test equipment based in
Bloomington, Minnesota. Its Network Probe and INTERNetwork
Probe product lines include wide area network portable
diagnostic instrumentation, performance measurement, and
media-level mapping and statistical tools.
Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL) is an operating system software
company, the developer of network services, specialized and
general purpose operating system products including NetWare
