  3. Congratulations on your good taste in DOS keypunch emulators! This text
  4. file explains how to unpack and install the KP5 shareware package.
  5.  
  6. The shareware distribution kit consists of (1) this 'read.me' file, (2) an
  7. installation program (INSTALL.EXE), and (3) six self-extracting 'modules'
  8. (KP5PAKA.EXE through KP5PAKF.EXE).
  9.  
  10. Presumably, you have either downloaded and unzipped the distribution kit
  11. from a bulletin board or CompuServe, or have received it on a diskette from
  12. a shareware vendor.
  13.  
  14. You use the INSTALL program to unpack and install the KP5 modules. In cases
  15. where disk space is tight (for example, installing onto a 360K diskette),
  16. the INSTALL program will allow you to unpack just those modules you need.
  17. You may unpack KP5 modules all onto one disk, or onto several diskettes.
  18. You will need 300K free disk(ette) space to install the basic system;
  19. 630K free space for all modules.

  22. HOW TO UNPACK AND INSTALL

  24. The way to run INSTALL is as follows:

  27.    [drive1:][path1]INSTALL [drive2:][path2] [-s] [?]

  30. Sorry, I couldn't resist a little DOS manual-like syntax.  The first
  31. incomprehensible construct ([drive1:][path1]) refers to the drive and
  32. directory in which the INSTALL program, and the rest of the distribution
  33. kit, is located.  The command-line argument [drive2:][path2] refers to the
  34. drive and directory in which you would like KP5 installed.  The directory
  35. does not have to have been created prior to running INSTALL.  You may omit
  36. this option, or you may change your mind while INSTALL is running.  The -s
  37. option is used to compensate for 'snow' on CGA displays; if you're not sure
  38. what kind of display you've got, try INSTALL without the -s option first.
  39. The ? option will generate a 'help' screen describing INSTALL's syntax.

  43. (1) Distribution kit is in a diskette in drive A:, you want to install
  44.     KP5 to hard drive C:
  45.  
  46.     a:install c:

  48. (2) Distribution kit has been unzipped to the current hard drive
  49.     directory, and you want to install KP5 to the same drive...

  53. (3) Distribution kit has been unzipped to the current hard drive
  54.     directory, and you want to install KP5 to a public directory
  55.     on a network drive...

  61. THE KP5 MODULES

  63. In case the INSTALL program is missing or demonically possessed, the KP5
  64. modules may be unpacked simply by executing them as programs. For example,
  65. if you issue the command KP5PAKA, the basic system will be unpacked into
  66. the current directory.

  81. You can learn a lot about KP5 by just running it, as the small and large
  82. HELP files provide an online User's Guide. In fact, the text file KP5.DOC
  83. found in the Documents module is a printable version of the large help
  84. file, generated by the KP5 help system.

  86. However, you should take a look at the text file README.DOC, also located
  87. in the Documents module. This file explains the basic features of KP5,
  88. offers tips on how to maximize its performance, and shows how to install
  89. KP5 in Windows 3.

  93. Remember that shareware is not free.  If you decide to use KP5, you must
  94. register it according to the instructions in the REGISTER.DOC text file.
  95. If that file is missing, contact me through postal or electronic mail.  If
  96. you register KP5, you will receive a printed, typeset-quality manual, have
  97. access to unlimited technical support, and will recieve all future upgrades
  98. for just the cost of shipping & handling.

  100. The KP5 shareware package follows the guidelines advocated by the
  101. Associaton of Shareware Professionals (ASP), of which I am an
  102. author-member.  It is fully functional and not 'crippled' in any way.

  104. You should read the following ASP Ombudsman's statement. It explains what
  105. ASP can do for you if you have trouble resolving any problems regarding
  106. shareware marketed by an ASP author-member.
