Instant Artist, Version 1.01 README.DOC 1/19/93 Page 1
╔════════════════════════════╗
║ Welcome to Instant Artist! ║
╚════════════════════════════╝
NOTE: Items denoted with an asterisk (*) are NEW to version 1.01
1: Adobe Fonts: IA is unable to use PostScript Type 1 fonts with sizes
that are greater than 64K. The actual files used by IA are the *.PFB files,
usually found in the \PSFONTS directory (if you have ATM). Default settings
in IA are for C:\PSFONTS. To change this, type IA -SETUP at the DOS
prompt.
2. Mouse use with 800 x 600: The Microsoft Mouse will not support
800 x 600 resolution. This is also true with some other mice. Trying to run
IA with the -MSVGA switch may have some pretty bizarre results if your
mouse is one of these (example: partial screens, invisible mouse pointers,
etc.). For Logitech users, your mouse driver must be version 6.1 or later.
Contact your dealer or Logitech for an update.
3. When moving or resizing objects, the following information will
appear in the upper right hand corner of the screen:
Move Distance center of object is from top of
page and right hand side of page.
Resize Width and/or height of frame
Rotate Number of degrees rotated (between -180
and 180, negatives represent clockwise
rotation)
Skew Number of degrees skewed (between -80
and 80, negatives represent clockwise
skew)
Information is displayed to one decimal place.
4. Arc Resizing: IA has a 180 degree limitation when resizing arcs.
This means that if you have an arc sized close to 360 degrees, it will take two
edits to make it less than 180 degrees (unless Resize Around Center is turned
on).
5. Marquee selecting can also be used to toggle the state of an object's
frame between selected and unselected. You can do this by pressing the
SHIFT key while making your selection. Example: Six items are on the
screen with two of the items selected. If you press SHIFT while making your
marquee selection of all the items, the results will be four selected items
and two unselected ones.
6. Group Rotate: In addition to resizing, you can also group rotate.
This is only supported by keyboard usage, much like group resize. To rotate a
group of objects about a common center, create your linked set, then press the
Ctrl+PgUp or Ctrl+PgDn keys. The linked set will rotate in 15-degree
increments. Chapter 8 contains information on creating a linked set of
objects and group resizing.

*7. Color Separations: In the list of items to print are now four
additional choices: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black Color Separations. When
you select one of these, you will get a black print of all occurences of the
specified color. This will allow professional print houses to produce your
signs, banners, etc. on their presses for mass production of your document.
*8. There are additional page sizes, printers, and printer configurations
supported in the Configure Printer portion of the Print Dialog.
A. Pages Sizes A4 and B5 for Metric Users
B. Addition of drivers for HP 550C, HP LJIV, and others
C. Support for half-page prints for those users with laser printers
but not enough memory in the printer to support full-page
printing at the highest resolution. If you have a laser printer
that only has 512k of RAM, you can then print a sign over two
pages and tape the halves together (a laser printer must have
1.5MB or more of RAM to support a full page of graphics printed at
300 DPI).
9. The results of using the Complement command also depend upon
rotation. If the item chosen is rotated fewer than 22.5 degrees, then the new
item will appear below the original (room permitting) at the same rotation as
the original. This is handy for stacking text flashes on a sign or banner.
If rotation is greater than 22.5 degrees, then the new item will be placed
with its center point over the original's center point, and also be placed at
the opposite rotation. This is especially handy in doing text circles. First,
place the first half of the text circle, widening the arc out to around 180
degrees. Next, complement that arc. Finally, edit the text in the new arc to
be the second half of the message. The Layout for Point Reyes Dance Studio
(Sign, Event, Dancing) is a good example of this function in action.
10. Layout availability: There are a number of layouts available
specifically for use as replacement panels for Greeting Cards and Postcards.
You can reach these from the Edit Menu's Change xxxx command, where
xxxx is the face of the object (Front, Back, Inside Panel, etc.). Many of the
replacement choices are available from the layouts listed in the New... Dialog
Box, but there are a number of original layouts offered that are only available
as replacement faces.
*11. Bring Forward/Step Backward: These two commands work similarly to the
Bring to Front and Send to Back commands, but instead of sending the object
all the way to the front or back of your document, they will step it forward
or backward by a single step.
*12. Shrink to Fit: This command will automatically shrink a frame
down so that it will fit as tightly around an object as possible. This is
very handy for frame handles that disappear off screen after a stretch or
rotation.
13. 1/4" Spacing: This feature was added because some dot-matrix printers
were having difficulty with text set to 12 point and under. If you use a
dot-matrix printer and have problems with text bleed, try setting your text
lines with this option for improved printing.

14. Snap to Grid: Gridpoints are set 1/8" (34mm) apart. This value is
not adjustable.
15. Resize Around Center: With this option turned on, all resizing done
with grab-handles will be around the center of the object. With it turned off,
the opposite side of the handle moved will be the anchor point for the resize.
You can temporarily toggle this setting by pressing the Alt key after grabbing
the frame handle you intend to move. Chapter 3 of the manual describes
frame handles and editing frames.
*16. Metric: When this option is turned on, all page sizes and distances
will be reported using Metric units (mm). Note, however, that this does not
affect the actual size of the page, nor does it affect the sizes of available
layouts. These are still absolute in their English Standards.
------------------------ Changes to Documentation ----------------------------
A. Pg. 25. The list of document types contains "envelope" twice. The
second occurence should be replaced with "postcard".
B. Pg 109. There is a reference to Figure 5.31. Change to 5.27.
C. Pg 143. Step 1 in "Insert and Place..." procedure -- append "and
press <Enter>" to end of the step.
D. Pg 143. Same section, Step 5 -- you are instructed to "type" some
text. You are meant to INSERT that text in the same manner as the text in
Step 1.
E. Pg 194. The illustration of Wire Frame Preview on this page was
created when no objects in the document were selected. Selected object(s)
will display normally when Wire Frame Preview is turned on.
F. Pg 235. The documentation refers to four printer port choices while
the illustration shows that there are five. The illustration is correct.
