Collection Description
----------------------
John DeHaven is the chief programmer of Bangkok Security Associates
(BSA). The utilities in this collection have been assembled by him
over a period of years of low-level programming. They range across the
spectrum of personal computing -- from security to utility to mildly
entertaining.
Each of these utilities (and each of DeHaven's sharp-edged batch
files) has just ONE purpose. Each is carefully crafted to be as small
as possible, with most occupying less than a single disk cluster. Each
is written in assembly language, "talks directly to the hardware," and
operates at blazing speed.
DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools do not provide spiffy menus, colorful
screens, or configurable sound. They are specifically designed to do a
job, give whatever help might be needed -- and get out of your face.

The DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools collection is not freeware or public
domain software. All programs, documents and files contained on this
disk or in this archive are copyright. You are permitted to try all
programs in order to evaluate them only. After 30 days of such
evaluation, you must register Sharp-Edged Tools or delete them from
your computer disk.
To register DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools, please read the enclosed file
ORDER.DOC. For further information, consult the rest of this text file
and the other documentation on the disk or in the archive.
This document, DSHARP.DOC is an overview of DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools.
Please note that every program in this collection is accompanied by
specific documentation, a .DOC file with the same name as the relevant
program. For example, for instructions on how to use BEEPER.COM, see the
text file BEEPER.DOC; for how to employ CMON.COM, consult CMON.DOC. All
files in this collection which end with a .DOC extension are made in
ASCII format. You may print any such document easily, with the command:
TYPE filename.DOC > PRN
Be sure to substitute the name of an actual document for "filename" in
this command -- and be certain that your printer is on-line and turned on.
Here is a summary, in alphabetical order, of the .COM files included in
DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools.
BEEPER : Sounds tones and plays music on PC speaker (See SOUNDS.BAT)
BOOT : Reboots the machine as if you issued a Ctrl-Alt-Del.
BORD : Get a colored border around the monitor screen.
CBOOT : Cold boot the computer, similar to hitting Reset button.
CMON : TSR intercepts commands (Step through a batch file).
CPOP : TSR. Alt-Shift to display Hex-ASCII-Decimal codes.
ESCAPE : TSR. Use the ESC key at the command line.
FFIND : Extremely fast text-searching utility works on any files.
FREE : Display summary of all memory and remaining disk space.
GET : Multi-purpose batch program acts on keystrokes ("GET" for info)
HANDLE : All information on file handles on the machine.
HOT2 : TSR will hot-key out of pesky programs and reclaim RAM.
LANCHECK : Return errorlevel according to type of LAN running.
LSS : F-A-S-T and basic directory listings.
MAKEFILE : Eat up disk space (or reserve it for later use).
PURGE : Wipe out a directory and all sub-directories below it.
SHOW : Unique file browser with line wrap and other features.
VCMOS : Save/Restore CMOS settings. (Do YOU know your drive number?)
VECTOR : See where any interrupt is hooked.

In addition to the provided on-disk documentation, MANY of the files
above will display brief "help screens" when you type the name of the
program at the DOS prompt. This help is meant only as a reminder, once
you have used the program and are basically familiar with it.
System Requirements and Compatability
Most of DeHaven's Sharp-Edged Tools need the minimum of the minimum
of a computer and resources. We highly recommend:
o DOS 3.0 or above
o An IBM PC or compatible computer, including most PC, XT, AT, PS/2,
286, 386, 386SX, 486 machines.
o A hard disk. Any program in the DeHaven collection can be run from
a floppy disk, but the collection is best sited on a hard drive.
o A minimum of 256K RAM. The TSR programs in this collection may use
high memory (above-640) if available.
o NOTE: The programs CMON.COM and ESCAPE.COM require DOS 3.3 or
above. These two utilities will NOT function correctly with
NDOS or 4DOS Ver 3.x. Both work correctly with 4DOS Ver 4.x.

Distribution:
-------------
Shareware distribution provides a full, working copy to users for
evaluation on a "try before you buy" basis. If you choose not to
register, then erase or pass your copy onto someone else.
Please note that if you obtained your copy from a mail order or disk
distributor, the fee paid goes entirely to the distributor and does
not cover the cost of the program license itself.
To register Sharp-Edged Tools, please see the document ORDER.DOC.
If you register Sharp-Edged Tools, you will receive:
1. The latest version of the programs, in case of any updates/fixes.
3. Printed manual(s) on installation and use of programs.
4. Discounts on future versions. Programs are under constant
development, and new programs being researched.
The shareware, evaluation version of Sharp-Edged Tools is meant only
for single-user computers. Companies, businesses, schools or government
offices wishing to register Sharp-Edged Tools for use on a site, or in
multiple locations, should contact BSA or a BSA agent listed in the
document in this shareware diskette or archive.
You may make as many copies of this shareware evaluation copy of
Sharp-Edged Tools as you wish, provided you copy, UNCHANGED, all files
and included documentation, specifically including this document.
Copies may be distributed freely to others electronically or via
diskette.
However, you may not sell or ask any consideration for Sharp-Edged
Tools. Mail Order Vendors and BBSes may charge a nominal distribution
fee NOT EXCEEDING $5.00 (five US dollars) or the equivalent in foreign
currency to cover copying and distribution costs.
The latest version of Sharp-Edged Tools always is available for
download at the BSA home BBS, the War on Virus. For fast access, log
onto the War on Virus under the user name "Victor Charlie" and use the
password "VC". Reliable, secure copies of the latest program versions
also can be obtained from BBSes listed in the file AGENTS.DOC included
in this evaluation.

What is Shareware?
------------------
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
some request registration while others require it. Some specify a
maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
simple right to continue using the software to an updated program
with printed manual.
In the specific case of this program, you are encouraged to evaluate
it for a maximum of 30 days. After this period, please register it
by sending us your license payment -or- delete the program from your
disk -or- pass it along to someone else for evaluation.

Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a commercial
disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use
the product, you don't pay for it. Who could ask for more?
