Insert a different data disk in you data drive and
when you are done, press 'CRTL'+'ENTER' to continue
with the program.
If you didn't really want to change the data disk
just leave the current data disk in the data drive
and press CTRL+ENTER to continue with the program.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the desired
action and then press the 'ENTER' key to execute your
choice.

If you are here to Add, Edit or View the data, you can
the move cursor by tapping the 'ENTER' key to move to the
next field, or the 'ESC' key to back-up one field. You can
also exit the screen and save the updated data from any-
where on the screen by pressing the F10 key.
If you are adding records, as you reach the end of the
screen, the record will be saved and you can then start
entering a new record. To exit when the last new record
has been entered, just press the 'ESC' key.
If you are here to delete this record, you can tap the
'ENTER' key to delete the record, or the 'ESC' key to
exit this screen without deleting the record.
Press 'ENTER' for more Help or 'ESC' to exit
Enter the data from the census data records as appropriate.
Note that the fields on the screen will be selected for
data entry in the same order as the field on the original
census forms. (The only exception to this is on the 1880
census form some of the later fields are skipped on the
entry screen. The location of the skipped fields are
marked by the '
' characters seperating the parts of
the screen.)
Note also that the 'ESC' key will do exactly as the name
implys. Which is to say that if you have started to enter
data in a field, it will return the field to whatever
values it origionally contained. If you have not entered
any data in the field, it will back you up one field (from
the first field on the screen it will return you to the
previous screen).
The 'Remarks' line is really 5 lines and will scroll as
required. An '*' beside the 'Remarks" line means that there
is more than one line of remarks data. Use the arrow keys
to scroll thru the remarks lines as required.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
Use the arrow keys to move the cursor to the file you wish
to work with. Then press "ENTER" to load the file.
If you want to start a new file, just press the "INS" key,
and to delete the file the selector bar is on, just press
the "DEL" key.
MAIN MENU HELP
The top portion of the menu shows the name of the data
file you are using. The next line shows the number of
active records in that data file.
Select the desired item by moving the cursor using the
arrow keys and then press the 'ENTER' key to execute
your choice.
Available choices are:
ADD NEW RECORDS
- Add new records to for a
selected census year.
VIEW/UPDATE RECORDS
- Select a record, then
view, edit or delete the
record.
RETURN TO MASTER MENU
- Exit the Data Entry
program and return to the
Master Menu.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
Use the arrow keys to move the selector bar to the desired
action, and then press the "ENTER" key to execute.
Your choices on the Master Menu are as follows:
CENSUS DATA ENTRY AND EDITING
- Change to the Data Entry
$program for the selected
$data file.
PRINT CENSUS REPORTS
- Change to the Reports
$program for the selected
$data file.
SELECT A NEW DATA FILE
- Select a new data file,
$delete an existing data
$file, or add a new data
$file.
WORK WITH THE CENSUS UTILITYS
- Work with the Census
$Utility program.

Press "ESC" to Exit the Help Screen
If you are using single sheets of paper to print
your reports on, then select 'YES' to make the
printer pause and allow you to insert a new sheet
of paper before printing the next page.
If you are using 'Fan-Fold' paper and don't want
to pause between pages, just select 'NO' with the
arrow keys.
When you have made your selection, press the
'ENTER' key to continue with the report.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
You can either select a record by moving the cursor with
the arrow keys or by entering a search key. The search key
is the particular field entry you have selected to select
a record by. As you enter each character of the search key
the closest matching record will be hi-lited. When the
record you want is hi-lited, you can press the 'ENTER' key
to view or edit it, press the 'DEL' key to delete it.
You can also move the selector bar (hi-lited record) using
the arrow keys on the number pad.
When you are done on this screen, just press the 'ESC' key
to return to the menu screen.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
Use the arrow keys to select the desired report,
then press 'ENTER' to print the report.
The available reports are as follows:
Summary in Name sequence
- print a summary of each
!record in Last Name,
!First Name sequence.
Summary in County sequence - print a summary of each
!record in County, Last
!Name, First Name sequence.
Detail Report for One Name - Print all data for one
!record, selected by name.
!(NOTE: Exact data on the
"report will be determined
"by the census year.)
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
The Soundex Search requires that you enter the full last
name that you wish to search for. When you have entered
the name and pressed the "ENTER" key, those records which
have a last name that sounds the same will be shown. To
try another name, delete the old search name entry and
enter the new name. Note: The Soundex Search WILL NOT
work on partial last names! Also, due to the current
limitations of the search function, the search name must
exist in the data base for the search to take place.
This screen is used to enter the basic data required to
enter the basic selection data for the individual(s)
you want to get from the archives.
The name and census year are both required. The census
year is required because it will enable the program to
select the proper form for census data entry.
Pressing 'CTRL'+'R' will duplicate the previous entry
for any field (from a previous screen) allowing you to
save keystrokes. This is not applicable to the
'REMARKS' field!
You can use the first letter of the desired action (on
the last line) or use the arrow keys to move the cursor
to the desired action and then press the 'ENTER' key.

The "As Entered Sequence" search screen works sligtly
different than the other search screens. Your only means
of moving through the listings is to use the arrow keys
and the PgUp and PgDn keys. The arrow keys will move the
selector bar up or down one listing, while the PgUp and
PgDn keys will move the selector bar up or down by one
screen.
As with all selector screens, pressing "ENTER" will allow
you to edit the selected record, while the "INS" key will
allow you to enter a new record immediately after the
selected record. Pressing the "DEL" key will allow you to
delete the selected record. Pressing the "ESC" key will
exit the selector screen and return you to the menu.

Enter the drive and path to where your data files
will be located. The program will default to
the current drive and directory. Note that the
final \ is required.
Press 'ESC' to exit 'Help'
The first line is the short version of the file name. It
can be from 1 to 8 characters long. It can not have
spaces or '.' in any part of the name. This is the actual
DOS file name. The program will not allow you to enter a
duplicate file name.
The second line is a descriptive file name that you will
normally use to select the file name and can be up to 25
characters long. You can use any characters you wish in
this file name.
If you are here to delete a file, just press the "ENTER"
key to delete it or press "ESC" to exit without deleting it.
For the 1790 census year some states did not use the
Federal form. If your state did not use the "Long"
Federal form you will answer this question with a "N".

When adding a new record, you must enter the proper census
year so that the appropriate form can be selected for data
entry. Only actual census years will be allowed.
