First, a few facts....
Fact: No deficit-reducing tax in history has ever reduced the deficit!
Fact: For every dollar we send Washington, they spend $1.69!
Fact: The tax increase of 1990 triggered the resession that we are
just coming out of... And we kicked that guy out of office!
Fact: Members of Congress in 1992, introduced bills to increase spending
by a gross total of $4.83 trillion, while proposing cuts of only
$448 billion. This ratio of $11 of increases for every dollar of
cuts reflects overwhelming pressure on the budget. Of the $448
billion in cuts, 45 percent were across-the-board measures that
failed to specify which programs to cut, or how to cut them.
When only specific spending bills are tallied, the ratio of
proposed increases to cuts is nearly 20 to 1.
Fact: Budget Cut is Washington-speak for a reduction in a increase in
spending. Don't laugh. A overwhelming majority of the proposed
"cuts" have shown up on the chopping block up to six times before.
Fact: If law, i.e. the Gramm-Rudman Budget Reduction Act, can't force
Congress to cut spending, do you think they will do it this time?
By the way, Gramm-Rudman only affected discretionary spending.
Non-discretionary spending, which by law can't be touched,
includes $302.2 billion in Social Security, $202.8 billion in
interest on the debt, $129.9 billion in Medicare, $83.4 billion
for welfare, $80.5 billion for Medicaid, and $77.4 billion for
federal retirement.
I joined the National Taxpayers Union for one reason only. To keep
track of our elected representatives.
I am bound and determined to gather as much information as I possibly
can about our elected officials and share that information with others.
Take a look at our elected representatives and see how well they are
doing in hold the line. But let me make a point about this....
This last election, we put 85% of our elected officials back into
Washington. Why? Because our guy is a great guy. Our guy really
brings the bacon home. It's the other guy that we need to get out
of Washington. A federally-funded waste treatment plant in our
district is a good thing. It's pork if it ends up in another
Congressman's district. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
The overriding concern that our elected officials have during
their tenure is their re-election. That's why they try to get as
much of the federal pie as they possibly can for their district.
Witness the fevor everyone experiences when they think that
a federal project in their district or entitlement is in danger of
getting cut....
