  37.  Q: What is the purpose of comp.archives.msdos.announce newsgroup?

  39.  A: The CAM.announce newsgroup was created the 15th of December
  40. 1992.  It has the following clarified charter which gives it
  41. purpose.

  43.    This moderated newsgroup is for the upload announcements and
  44. related information from MSDOS FTP sites with PD and shareware
  45. material.  The subjects include the upload announcements via the
  46. MSDOS FTP site moderators, the MSDOS sites' periodical summaries,
  47. potential policy statements and downtime warnings, and the MSDOS FTP
  48. site moderators' reports about the connectivity problems with their
  49. archive sites.  Unix announcements conform only if they directly
  50. relate to transferring or handling the MSDOS material from the MSDOS
  51. FTP sites.

  62. The purpose of comp.archives.msdos.announce is to be a ONE-WAY
  63. channel for MSDOS upload announcements which the moderators handle,
  64. and other one-way, occasional information relating to MSDOS FTP
  65. sites.  The moderators will therefore not be handling users'
  66. discussion material, questions, and replies.  The unmoderated
  67. comp.archives.msdos.d newsgroup (see below) will cover that aspect.

  76.  A: The CAM.d newsgroup was created the 15th of December 1992.  The

  78. old comp.binaries.ibm.pc.archives newsgroup, which should thus no
  79. longer be used.)

  99.  Q: How do I obtain the announced files from the MsDos FTP sites?
  100.  
  101.  A: If you are not familiar with using anonymous FTP or mail servers
  102. for downloading material from the MsDos FTP sites, you should
  103. contact the maintainer of the relevant site for the instructions.
  104. Take a look at the instructions (given below in the second section
  105. A2 of this answer) on how to order for example the garbo.uwasa.fi
  106. instructions from Timo Salmi (ts@uwasa.fi).  The SIMTEL20
  107. information is available from Keith Petersen
  108. (w8sdz@TACOM-EMH1.Army.Mil).
  109.    Please note that you should not email the moderator(s) of an FTP
  110. site for advice on another FTP site.  Although the moderators often
  111. cooperate, the individualized queries should always go directly to
  112. the right place.  If you need the moderators' email addresses, see
  113. the MsDos FTP site list garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder*.zip. It also
  114. contains information about the major mirroring sites.
  115.    Likewise you should pose the questions concerning the mirror
  116. sites to the mirroring site's moderator, not to the moderator of the
  117. site being mirrored.  Although mirroring is very welcome and the
  118. sites cooperate, the mirroring is an independent operation by the
  119. sites that do the mirroring.

  121.   A2: Even if this relates to a specific site (Garbo), much of the
  122. information in the referred instructions is generic:
  123.    "If you do not know how to go about getting material from the
  124. Garbo archives, users are welcome to email me for the prerecorded
  125. garbo.uwasa.fi instructions (long, circa 29Kb).  North American
  126. users are referred to the Garbo mirror on wuarchive.wustl.edu.
  127. Australian users are referred to the archie.au mirror.  For the
  128. Asian users there is the NCTUCCCA.edu.tw mirror.  The mirrors may
  129. lag occasionally, or might not have all the files.  If you do not
  130. receive my reply within five days, please ask your own site's system

  135.  Q: Something is wrong with the .zip (.zoo) etc package I downloaded
  136.     I get a CRC error or whatever when I try to process a .zip
  137.     package.

  149.         Using the old Unix version for testing 2.04G .zip files on
  150.         Unix can cause false CRC error messages.
  151.  
  152. (The most common error with .zoo is using the old 2.01 version
  153. instead of the current version 2.10).
  154.  
  155.  A2: In over 99.9% of cases this is caused either by the user's
  156. failure to transfer the .zip packages in a binary mode or using an
  157. outdated version of PKUNZIP.  It is not impossible, but it is
  158. extremely rare that a package is actually corrupt on the archive
  159. site.
  160.    Some users want to know in this connection where to get PKZIPFIX.
  161. It is within the PKZIP distribution package (pkz110eu.exe,
  162. pkz204g.exe), but using it will not rectify the errors described in
  163. the above.
  164.    At least Garbo and SIMTEL20 do not yet take uploads made with
  165. PKZIP version 2.04G.  But some other FTP sites and BBSes might.
  166.    If you are using a 386 or 486 computer, PKUNZIP may be having
  167. some problems with your machine's BIOS.  You can force PKUNZIP to
  168. NOT use 386 instructions by doing SET PKNO386=ON at the DOS command
  169. prompt to put the variable PKNO386 into your DOS environment.
  170.    There is also a Unix version of unzip in case you wish to look at
  171. the package already at your Unix host.  At Garbo it is

  177.  A3: PKWare blissfully started advertising PKZIP 2.0 in Magazines
  178. already in spring 1992.  PKWare's PKZIP 2.04C was finally released
  179. the 28th of December 1992 and has been since updated to be
  180. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/arcers/pkz204g.exe.  For the time being at least
  181. Garbo does not accept uploads in the new format.  We are waiting for
  182. the matters to settle, especially since there was such a high number
  183. of bug reports with the original 2.04C version.
  184.    Also be warned that there are countless bogus PKZIP 1.20, 2.0,
  185. 2.02, 3.05 and whatever scams floating around.  They usually are
  186. hacks of PKZIP 1.93A beta test version.  Some of them are trojans
  187. and / or carry computer virii.

  191.  Q: What if the FTP site is busy most of the time?
  192.  
  193.  A: If you have a BSD Unix host consider automated FTP:

  196. This is advisable even if you don't have access problems, since
  197. using batchftp decreases the overhead of being connected.
  198.    One thing not to do if an FTP site is busy.  If you have the FTP
  199. capability don't substitute FTP by mail servers.  The mail servers
  200. cause more load both on the net traffic and the mail server site's
  201. capacity.

  205.  Q: How do I submit programs to the MsDos FTP archives?
  206.  
  207.  A: The answer naturally depends on your target site. You should
  208. contact the maintainer of the relevant site for more information.
  209.    For Garbo you can also get the instructions by downloading
  210. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/UPLOAD.INF and /pc/UPTEXT.INF.  Please read these
  211. files carefully before you upload to Garbo, so that your own and our
  212. time will not be unnecessarily wasted.
  213.    For SIMTEL20 see the periodic posting by Keith Petersen, or
  214. contact him directly.
  215.    The addresses of most of the major MsDos FTP site moderators can
  216. be found in garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder*.zip.

  220.  Q: I don't have FTP. Where are the mail servers?
  221.  
  222.  A: I only have information on the Garbo mail server and a couple of
  223. mail servers serving SIMTEL20.  Information on the former is
  224. included in the prerecorded long (29Kb) Garbo instructions I have
  225. promised to send to users upon their email requests.  Some
  226. information on the latter is given in garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/
  227. moder*.zip list of MsDos sites.  I have no further information on
  228. the mail servers serving SIMTEL20, and none on the mail servers of
  229. the other sites.
  230.    Also watch for the periodic information on the CAM.announce
  231. newsgroup the mail servers serving SIMTEL20.
  232.    In general, this is practically all the information I have on the
  233. sites' mail servers.  I don't run even Garbo's.  (My fellow
  234. moderator Harri Valkama does that).  I just have the prerecorded
  235. instructions.  That's all, so I am afraid it is of little use of
  236. asking me about any mail server details or problems, since I do not
  237. know the answers.

  241.  Q: What if I do not get any response from a mail server?
  242.  
  243.  A: Contact your own site's system manager, and ask him/her to look
  244. at it.  You must has a returnable mail path in order to use the mail
  245. servers.
  246.    One thing _*NOT*_ to do if you haven't ever gotten a response
  247. from the particular mail server, is sending the the same request
  248. repeatedly.  It may reach the server even if the server cannot send
  249. the request back to you, because of your bouncing address.  You'll
  250. just be overloading the mail server.  Please do not do that!
  251.    If you have been able to get files from a mail server, but don't
  252. get the file you are currently requesting, the same applies.  Do
  253. _*NOT*_ send the request over and over again.  First assure from the
  254. CURRENT file lists that the file really is there.  Some programs get
  255. updated fairly frequently, and there may be other similar reasons
  256. for a temporary unavailability.

  262.  A: If you already know fairly accurately what you are looking for,
  263. then before posting you could first look at the file lists of the
  264. major MsDos FTP sites, or try the Archie server.  For example the
  265. main file list for SIMTEL20 and Garbo are

  269.    The tips in Samuel Ko's "The Most Useful MSDOS Programs at Simtel
  270. and Garbo" garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/filelist/useful*.zip can be of much
  271. help in for a number of the most common programs.

  274. the screen to a file or to the printer, utilities for directing all
  275. printer output to a file, and so on and on.
  276.    Likewise should you need programs for your Unix host to transfer
  277. and handle the files, programs like Zmodem and the various
  278. (un)archiving utilities like unzip, scan the said material, and the
  279. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/unix/INDEX.ZIP file list.  Also take a look at
  280. /unix/ts/0news-u for advice on making the Unix files operational on
  281. your host.
  282.    As for the Archie servers, see garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/tsfaq*.zip
  283. again for the pointer.  (But note that the coverage and an
  284. up-to-date status of the servers is not always guaranteed).
  285.    This item is definitely not to discourage anyone from asking
  286. relevant questions, quite the contrary.  Contributions in the form
  287. of news postings from all users are welcome and enjoyed.  Asking
  288. appropriate questions in order to find useful PD & shareware MsDos
  289. programs _and_ giving informative answers to the relevant questions
  290. is partly what the CAM.d newsgroup is about.  However, it is good to
  291. know these basics before asking away.  It is polite towards the
  292. other users to have already taken some trivial preliminary steps.

  294.  A2: If you are quite a newcomer to all this then you'll need the
  295. utilities to unpack the archived files like the .zip files referred
  296. to in the above.  You can get the archive extractors from many
  297. sites.  For Garbo the references to .zip extractors are the

  314.  A: These formats (tar and Z) are (usually) Unix files.  The files
  315. with the .Z extension are compressed files which you'll need to
  316. uncompress.  Uncompress is available as a standard feature on Unix
  317. systems (try "man uncompress").  You can get it for MsDos as well eg
  318. as garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/unix/comp430d.zip.  For more on this and many
  319. similar MsDos utilities questions recurring over and over again
  320. please see for example Samuel Ko's "The Most Useful MSDOS Programs
  321. at Simtel and Garbo" garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/filelist/useful*.zip.
  322.    Tarred files with the extension of .tar ("tape archives") can be
  323. handled with a tar program on a Unix system, or on MsDos with the
  324. utilities pointed to in useful*.zip like garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/unix/
  325. tar4dos.zoo.  On unix try "man tar".  You'll also find some further
  326. information in garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/ts/0news-u of for processing tar
  327. files on Unix.
  328.    Uuencoding is a 7-bit format for sending files in ordinary ascii
  329. format.  On a Unix system see "man uudecode" and for MsDos get
  330. garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/decode/uuexe520.zip and/or see gain useful*.zip.

  334.  Q: How do I get it from a mirror site? And which directory?
  335.  
  336.  A: If you have managed to get a pointer to, and the location of a
  337. utility you wish to have, and you would prefer to download it from a
  338. mirror site near you, please consider the following.  All the
  339. potential questions concerning the mirroring site are best directed
  340. to the moderator of the site that does the mirroring.  Not to the
  341. moderator of the site being mirrored.  This is because mirroring is
  342. an independent operation.  You can find the email addresses of the
  343. major MsDos mirror sites in the MsDos FTP site list.  It is
  344. available as garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder*.zip, where the "*" stands
  345. for a growing version number.
  346.    Naturally, don't go asking the moderator to find the directory of
  347. the utility for you.  See the site's file list(s).  The moder*.zip
  348. has pointers to the file lists of some sites, and besides they are
  349. usually well in evidence at the sites.

  355.  A: It is not necessary to try to find someone who might be willing
  356. to do it.  That is what the mail servers are for.  Watch out for the
  357. periodic information in comp.archives.msdos.announce, or if you wish
  358. to use the garbo.uwasa.fi mail server you are welcome to email me
  359. for the prerecorded instructions (long, about 29Kb) as explained in
  360. the item "How do I obtain the announced files from the MsDos FTP

  368. the other potentially interested readers of CAM.d, that is quite a
  369. selfish attitude, and is not condoned.  To prosper the newsgroup
  370. needs everyone to be ready to contribute one way or the other.

  378.  A: To avoid this is exactly why we need the users to summarize if
  379. they get useful replies by email.  Likewise this is one of the
  380. reasons why I almost always post my own pointers, and very seldom
  381. email, even when the user has explicitly expressed such a wish in
  382. his/her posting.  Besides, it often pays take a moment to scan the
  383. postings before rushing to anything.  There may already be posted
  384. replies to the question.  Please do not post "me too's" even if we
  385. understand why some users do this.
  386.    Now what to do if someone is clearly planning to hog the answers
  387. to a question that definitely interests you.  The answer is not to
  388. send a me too, but to point out by email to the poster of the
  389. request that you would like him/her to share the information s/he
  390. gets from the gentle users of CAM.d.
  391.    The real point here is, however, that in order for CAM.d to
  392. prosper we need all the gentle users to be also prepared to
  393. contribute, not just to exploit.

  409.    The unarchivers (and many of the archivers) are available also
  410. for Unix, which means that you can (if you wish to) check and handle
  411. the downloaded files already on your Unix host before transferring
  412. the files to your PC.  At Garbo the relevant directory is
  413. /unix/arcers.

  419.  A: The most publicized sites SIMTEL20 and Garbo do not carry
  420. recreational games, but for example ftp.ulowell.edu has a very good
  421. collection.  For a list of MsDos FTP sites see garbo.uwasa.fi:

  423.    As for gifs, that information is not readily available since the
  424. powers that be do not always look benevolently upon using the
  425. resources for the purpose.  Perhaps the best avenue for getting them
  426. is calling BBSes (bulletin boards system).  One pointer to an
  427. InterNet site, however, is that wuarchive.wustl.edu carries a large
  428. selection of gifs in their /graphics/gif directory.  (That will all
  429. from me on this.)
