BORLAND ANNOUNCES NEW PROFESSIONAL
PASCAL DEVELOPMENT SYSTEMS
High-Productivity Products Feature Breakthrough Technology
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- November 2, 1992 -- Borland International Inc.
(NASDAQ:BORL) today announced Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0, a new
development system for professional DOS and Windows programmers. Borland
Pascal with Objects 7.0 enables programmers to create applications for three
platforms: DOS, DOS Protected Mode Interface (DPMI) and Windows environments.
Borland also announced the availability of Turbo Pascal 7.0, a new version
of Turbo Pascal for entry-level programmers who want to learn object-oriented
programming.
Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 features breakthrough technology not found in
any other programming language that enables programmers to share code
libraries between DOS and Windows. This new technology provides programmers
with an easy migration path from DOS to Windows by including the exclusive
capability to create Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) that can be used in both
DOS and Windows.
"Our huge base of professional Pascal programmers asked for a product that
combines the best DOS and Windows development systems," said Paul Gross,
general manager of Borland's Application Development Business Unit. "We've
responded by delivering a professional development system that removes the
limitations of DOS with DPMI and provides a smooth migration from DOS to
Windows."
BORLAND PASCAL WITH OBJECTS 7.0 NEW FEATURES
DPMI Application Creation - This feature enables users to create
protected-mode applications that access up to 16 megabytes of memory for code
and data, giving programmers the ability to process larger amounts of data
more efficiently.
DOS Dynamic Link Libraries - This feature is exclusive to Borland Pascal with
Objects 7.0 and enables users to create DOS and Windows Dynamic Link
Libraries (DLLs). In addition, DLLs written in C/C++ or other languages can
be linked into DOS and Windows programs created with Borland Pascal with
Objects 7.0.
DOS and Windows ObjectBrowsers - The integrated development environment now
includes ObjectBrowsers for DOS and Windows which allow the user to easily
navigate source code either by objects or by units. The browser can display
information in hierarchical form as well as all reference to variable types,
and other symbolic formation.
New Optimizations - Six new compiler optimizations have been added including
80386 32-bit math operations, so that existing programs can be recompiled for
faster performance.
Tools - Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 includes all of the tools necessary
for DOS and Windows development without requiring the Microsoft Windows SDK.
The package contains TurboVision and ObjectWindows application frameworks,
WinSight, WinSpector, Resource Workshop and enhanced versions of Turbo
Debugger, Turbo Profiler and Turbo Assembler.
Other new features in Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 include high-capacity
DOS and Windows Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), color syntax
highlighting, unlimited undo/redo, and new language features for added
flexibility.
TURBO PASCAL 7.0
Turbo Pascal 7.0 is an entry level programming system for DOS developers who
want the fastest way to learn object-oriented programming. This new DOS
version is a subset of Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0, which provides the
ability to create DOS real-mode programs.
Turbo Pascal 7.0 has many new enhancements to the compiler, environment and
libraries. New features include a high-capacity DOS IDE, color syntax
highlighting with unlimited undo/redo, an ObjectBrowser for navigating source
code, and new tutorials on using the Turbo Vision applications framework.
BORLAND PASCAL PRODUCT LINE
Since its introduction in 1983, Borland's Pascal compiler has been the world
standard with more than two million users worldwide. Borland offers a
complete line of Pascal products aimed at professionals as well as novice
programmers. Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 and Turbo Pascal 7.0 replace
the current Turbo Pascal Professional 6.0 and Turbo Pascal 6.0. Turbo
Pascal for Windows 1.5 will remain on the market as an entry-level,
object-oriented programming system for Windows. For users who want to learn
how to program, Borland also offers two training videos from its Visions
video series, "Learn Programming Today" and "The World of ObjectWindows for
Pascal."
THIRD PARTY SUPPORT
Borland's Pascal product line is supported by more than fifty third-party
tool vendors. Additionally, Turbo Pascal 7.0 and Borland Pascal with Objects
7.0 will be supported by two Borland-endorsed books from Bantam Electronic
Publishing: "Borland Pascal Programming for Windows," by Tom Swan and
"Borland Pascal 7.0 from Square One," by Jeff Duntemann. Other major
publishers have announced books based on Borland's new Pascal products
including Que, Osborne/McGraw-Hill, Addison-Wesley, Sybex, Sams, Abacus,
Benjamin/Cummings, Richard T. Irwin and Windcrest/McGraw-Hill.
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 runs on any IBM or 100% compatible personal
computer and requires an 80286 or higher processor, two megabytes of memory,
and a hard disk. DOS development requires DOS 3.3 or later and Windows
development requires Windows 3.0 or later, graphics (EGA, Hercules, VGA or
higher resolution), and a mouse. Turbo Pascal 7.0 requires 720K of disk
space and 512K of memory. A hard disk and an 80286 or higher processor is
required to use high-capacity IDE.
PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 has a suggested retail price of $495.
Current owners of Turbo Pascal for Windows, Turbo Pascal Professional or
Turbo Pascal can upgrade to Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0 for $149.95. As
a special introductory offer, the Application Framework and Runtime Library
Source Code, a $195.00 value, is included in Borland Pascal with Objects 7.0
at no extra charge.
