Administrative notes:
Hey all, Erik here, sitting in for Kevin the scholar. There has been some
requests for a subscriber database for the Bottom Line. This would be a file
that would contain various information on each subscriber to this fine digest.
Suggested info includes the following:
Full name
city
state
country
electric or acoustic bass or both
discipline (rock,jazz,C&W,classical, etc.)
net address (we already have this info :))
main equipment (brief)
main influences (brief)
any bands involved with (brief)
other instruments played (?)
This would obviously be a big file, as there are well over 500 subscribers.
I am willing to collect and sort this data, as long as there is interest
in this information, as as long as all of you are willing to provide this
information. To make this a worthwile effort, subscriber feedback would need
to be much higher than response to the Readers' Polls. Please drop a line
to bass-request@uwplatt.edu or habbinga@csn.org and let us know what you
think of this idea. Also, please let us know if you would be unwilling to
give out this information. We will keep you updated on the progress of this
issue.
Thanks!
Erik

Subject: Howdy
Hello all --
I'm a new subscriber to the list so I thought I'd introduce myself.
My name is Mike Hutchinson, and I'm a senior at Ithaca College in upstate
New York. I've been playing electric bass seriously for about 4 years now.
I'm in a progressive hard rock outfit called "Lemon Juice" which has been
gigging in Ithaca and surrounding towns for a year.
I'd say my main influences right now (what time is it?) are Victor Wooten,
Bootsy Collins, and John Paul Jones. In the past I took in a lot of Geddy
and Billy Sheehan, but now I seem to be leaning toward highly groove oriented
funk players and Motown style "rocks."
I've been playing an M V Pedulla Series II Custom (lefty, active PJ) for
a year and a half and love it. After much deliberation, I picked up an
SWR Redhead this summer after trying every amp I could get my hands ,
and it has definitely lived up to its reputation.
Some of the bands I've been listening to lately: Fates Warning, King's X,
Bela Fleck, Maceo Parker, Dream Theatre, Alice in Chains, 24-7 Spyz.
I'm glad I finally discovered a forum for bass players on the Internet ...
I hope to learn as much from the list as I contribute.

Subject: Hello!
Hello! I am a new subscriber so I thought I would introduce
myself. My name is Aaron White and I am a student at Moorhead State
University in Minnesota. I am from Minneapolis. Currently I haven't
declared a major but music will be either a major or a minor. I plan to
spend my life trying to survive in the music business. I have played
bass guitar for about 5 years and though I try to have my own sound I am
influenced by Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Lee Sklar, and Will Lee. I am
very much a fingerstyle player, not a big fan of slap and the same goes
for the pick. Currently, my main instrument is a Philip Kubicki Factor
4-string and I also use a custom fretless Steinberger copy. I use a
Samson wireless, Gallien-Krueger 400RB amplifier, Alesis M-EQ230 Graphic
Eq., a GK 4x10" 4ohm cabinet, Korg MPK-130 MIDI Pedalboard and an old
Korg Poly-61 synth. Anyway, what else is there to say?
ALSO...
In a recent issue someone commented about the action on
Rickenbacher basses. Ric's tend to be set very low as they have always
been sort of a pick oriented bass versus slap/fingerstyle. The true
vintage sound of the Ric bass comes from a pick, and if you have one
handy a SVT 8x10 stack!! Anyway, I don't know if that is what you were
wondering, I read the question a while back! You should be able to set
it up the way you like it, or take it to your local guitar shop and have
them do it.

Subject: Eden/SWR
Here is what I know... I believe all of SWR's cabinets were
originally designed by Eden and until recently built by Eden. I played
through an Eden .25 head and two Eden 4x10's the other day and in my own
personal opinion it blew SWR sound away. VERY GOOD!! Although Bag End
has some fantastic speakers.
In response to the gain trouble with the SG800. If the click is
annoying you could try Billy Sheehan's epoxy trick. Coat the top of the
pickup with a thin layer of epoxy to cut down the click and a bit of
gain. Noise when turning near an amp could be the result of bad
shielding. Get some shielding foil in the control cavity if that is the
problem.
In response to Roman Richardson's comment on strings. I use Ken Smith
strings, they are awsome, however don't use the Burners, they aren't as
good as the higher version and the price is very similair. I use very
light strings (Smith 35-90) and they sound fantastic!
Anyway... /\aron \/\/hite

The holidays will soon be upon us, and just like last year, Bass Player
mag is running their "Buy one subscription-get one free" offer. If
anyone would like to share in the cost of the one full subscription with
me, we can get our new subscription at half price. Such a deal!
Mr Editor, is TBL going to drive this effort again like last year? Bass
Players all over the world are curious :^>

Subject: More of Speaker Enclosures
The other day I called JBL to get info on their drivers (speakers).
They sent me a number of things which should be of interest to anyone
thinking about building your own enclosures. First off, they sent me a
catalog, along with a couple of sample spec sheets. The spec sheets
have all of the Theile/Small parameters listed, so if you are going with
a T/S design all you have to do is plug the parameters in. They also
sent a stapled-together collection of info on enclosure design. This is
great, as it includes specs for about twenty typical enclosures, a sheet
of general tips for enclosure construction and usage, and a bibliography
containing twenty or so books on the subject of speaker enclosure
design. Sorry I don't have the phone number here at work, but it is
listed in the manufacturer's index in the Bass Player products issue.

Subject: Now what do I do?
I've somehow developed myself a case of tendonitis, and I have to lay
off playing for (at least) a couple of months. This turns out to be
very difficult for me- over the last three years, playing has become by
far the most important activity in my life. I find myself going home
from work and wandering around pretty aimlessly, trying to think of
something to do other than play. And of course my bass is always
sitting there, staring at me.
My question for any of you who have gone through a period where you
couldn't play is this- How do I deal with the jones? Any ideas of other
related things I could do to keep me busy and feeling like I'm making
some progress?

Subject: Cables
I seem to remember some posting about what gauge of cables to
use between different parts of your set up. What's the deal on this?
What gauge should I be using between guitar and amp?
between amp and cabinet?
if my speaker cab says 8ohms then can I use the outputs which say
8 and under? or 8 and over?
what about daisy chaining tuners/eq/ etc.? are there specs for
gauges here also?
ALSO, UNRELATED:
I have this woofer in a hartke 4x10 which seems to buzz a little
but it is not visibly ripped anywhere. It's really annoying when
playing soft. How much can I expect to pay for a new woofer or is
there some other way to repair it?
thanks for any help,
dave francis (my first post!)

Moserite
I just saw a Moserite "celebrity" short scale, semihollowbody bass here. SN#
Z2040. Any information about it? How old, what's it worth, etc... They want
$250 in a hard shell case. Except for finish cracks, it seemed to be in good
shape.
Oh, and anyone that may have tried to reach me about the Stick, I've been
having mail problems. Try me again at oz@pharlap.com.
THANKS!!
Bye!

Ok all, here it is for your bass-enjoyment. The linus and
Lucy theme as played by Stu Hamm.
A couple of notes: all of the G-string notes are played with
the right hand. Except for the part marked "Slap". The little `---'
things under the measures are ties. Sorry about the G-String tab being
so close together. Any other questions, feel free to mail me.
