  1. Installation Procedure for Full Bible Version
  2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  4. Hardware Requirements
  5. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6.  
  7. - IBM XT, AT or compatible computer
  8. - at least 256K memory (640K recommended)
  9. - hard disk drive C: (or another drive)
  10.     - 16 megabytes for AV-Darby-Youngs
  11.     - 15.5 megs for NKJV-RSV-NIV
  12.     -  1 megabyte for Greek Version
  13.     -  3 megabytes for Hebrew Version
  14.     - 16 megabytes for Bilingual Versions
  15.          (English-Foreign language-Englishman's Strong's Numbers)
  16.     - Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Verse Notes
  17.        7 megabytes
  18.  
  19. If you select the Data Compression option during the install, reduce the
  20. total space requirements by 7 megabytes.
  21.  
  22. Software Requirements
  23. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  24. - almost any current version of MS-DOS, PC-DOS, DR DOS, works
  25.  
  26. - DOS 2.11 or later
  27. - DR DOS 3.41 or later
  28. - OS/2 version 2.01 or later
  29.  
  30. Media Requirements
  31. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  32. - the Online Bible is normally distributed on 3 1/2 inch HD disks
  33. - these disk package should include:
  34.     - an INSTALLATION DISK to install ALL modules
  35.     - a TEXT module for each Bible version
  36.         - SCHOLAR = Combined Authorised Version & Darby & Young's (4 disks)
  37.         - MODERN = Combined NKJV & RSV & NIV (4 disks)
  38.         - Classical Greek & Hebrew Package (2 disks)
  39.     - CROSS REFERENCE module (1 disk on Install)
  40.     - TOPICS module (1 disk)
  41.     - New Testament Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (2 Disks)
  42.     - the Greek and Hebrew LEXICONS (1 disk)
  43.         -lexicons work with SCHOLAR, and MODERN packages
  44.          and bilingual versions
  45. - if you have 720k disks, about twice the number of disks are needed.
  46. - if you have 360k disks, about four times the number of disks are needed.
  47.  
  48. Shareware Versions of Authorised Version
  49. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  51. If you downloaded your copy from a bulletin board you should have a number
  52. of ZIPPED files. Format your disks and unzip the files to each of these
  53. disks.  If you use 360K or 720k or 1200K disks and wish to distribute it
  54. using these disks, read topic 9903 after you have installed the program.
  55. The install procedure can convert one size of disk to another.
  56.  
  57. If you do not want to become very frustrated, take 5 minutes and label your
  58. disks as follows:
  59.  
  60. 1) If the disk contains a file install.exe, label it the Install disk
  61. 2) If the disk contains a series of files scholar.001, scholar.002,
  62.    ... scholar.913, label the series the "Scholar Text Module" 1, 2, ... 13.
  63. 3) If the disk contains a series of files cxref.001 and cxref.902
  64.    label the series the "Cross References" 1 & 2.
  65. 4) If the disk contains a series of files topics.001 ... topics 904,
  66.    label the series the "Topics" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  67. 5) If the disk contains a series of files lexicon.001 ... lexicon 904,
  68.    label the series the "Lexicons" 1, 2, 3 & 4.
  69. 6) Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, tsk.001, tsk.002, tsk.003, tsk.904
  70.    label the series the "TSK" 1, 2, 3 & 4.

  72. Select option A on the install menu repeatily to install all these modules.

  74. Time Requirements
  75. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  76. - installation takes about this long for the full Authorised & Darby Version
  77.  
  78.    - 60 minutes, 4.77 MHZ 8088 (XT)
  79.    - 40 minutes, 6.00 MHZ 286  (AT)
  80.    - 30 minutes, 33.0 MHZ 386  (AT class)

  82. Installation is Easy
  83. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  84. 1) Verify you have the correct hardware, software and media
  85.  
  86. 2) PUT WRITE PROTECT TABS ON DISKS
  87.  
  88. 3) If you have a version 3.03 or earlier installed,
  89.  
  90.    a) delete everything EXCEPT your notes directories
  91.    b) create directory on hard drive used to install Online Bible
  92.         e.g. md c:\bible
  93.    c) for each note directory, copy as follows
  94.         md   c:\bible\notes.000
  95.         copy c:\notes.000 c:\bible\notes.000
  96.         del  c:\notes.000
  97.         rd   c:\notes.000
  98.         .
  99.         .
  100.         .
  101.         md   c:\bible\notes.300
  102.         copy c:\notes.300 c:\bible\notes.300
  103.         del  c:\notes.300
  104.         rd   c:\notes.300
  105.     d) the installation marks your notes so the verse display
  106.        shows which verses have notes.
  107.     e) if you are unsure about how to do this, get a friend to help.
  108.  
  109. 4) Make the floppy drive which contains the installation
  110.    disk your default drive, (i.e. set DOS prompt to A: or B:)
  111.  
  112. 5) Enter GO from A: or B: DOS prompt to install the program
  113.    DO NOT COPY DISKS ONTO HARD DRIVE - install from A: or B: drive
  114.  
  115. 6) Reboot system after installation is complete
  116.  
  117. 7) Use the mini-menu, MM to start the program.
  118.  
  119. Installing if you have no C drive
  120. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  121. Normally a hard disk is installed and accessed using the drive letter C.
  122. Some machines, e.g. Texas Instruments, install their hard drive at E.
  123. There is no hard drive at either C or D. To run the install for these
  124. machines, specify the drive letter as follows:
  125.  
  126.    install e
  127.  
  128. Network Installation
  129. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  130. - on a NOVELL or other network make sure the LASTDRIVE parameter
  131.   is correctly set in CONFIG.SYS to match the highest drive letter
  132.   used by the network.
  133. - install program on a node in the network and than copy all the
  134.   files to the main server.
  135.  
  136. Problems
  137. ~~~~~~~~
  138. 1) Data errors reading disks
  139.    - almost always caused by irregular spots ("dropouts") on disks,
  140.      but occasionally by actual disk damage (from a magnet, etc.),
  141.      and very rarely by dirty or poorly aligned read/write heads
  142.    - specify "Retry" to the DOS "Data error reading drive.." message
  143.    - Retry at least 50 times before giving up (this USUALLY works).
  144.      certain utilities such as PC Tools Compress (Surface) may work
  145.    - try on someone else's system
  146.        - if it works, COPY (don't DISKCOPY) the files to a better disk,
  147.          clean your drive heads and try again
  148.        - if it fails, reorder replacement disks from supplier
  149.  
  150. 2) Installation fails or mysteriously aborts
  151.  
  152.     - you are likely running some sort of menu system that
  153.       has caused the installation to fail
  154.     - if you are running DOS 4.00, upgrade to DOS 4.01 or DOS 5.00
  155.       or some other release. DOS 4.00 is so buggy it is hopeless.
  156.     - boot system from your original DOS disk
  157.     - retry installation
  158.     - if it fails, call for help
  159.  
  160. 3) VIRUS infection detected
  161.     - the installation disk must have the following files
  162.         go.bat, bible.901, view.com, install.exe, choose.exe,
  163.         install.901, read.me, sharewar.doc, tutorial.doc
  164.     - if these are altered, CRT displays VIRUS infection message
  165.       and stops the installation.
  166.     - this means the disk has been altered or is damaged.
  167.     - get replacement from distributors.
  168.     - check your computer for virus infections
  169.  
  170. 4) CRC errors during installation
  171.  
  172.     - disks altered by distributors or damaged
  173.     - get replacements from distributors
  174.  
  175. 5) Installation ok, but program aborts with "Undefined File(4)" message
  176.  
  177.     - update CONFIG.SYS to specify 20 files
  178.     - some machines like the Tandy 1000RL or PS/1 can be configured
  179.       so CONFIG.SYS is in ROM.
  180.         - the set up information for the computer must be changed
  181.         - change this so it is on the C drive.
  182.         - see your hardware manual for your machine or your dealer for details
  183.     - see DOS manual for details
  184.  
  185. 6) Install fails trying to access your C drive and your hard drive is
  186.    installed at some other letter
  187.  
  188.     - install again and specify your hard drive letter
  189.       - if your only hard drive is at the letter E: run install as follows
  190.  
  191.            install e
  192.  
  193. Conclusion
  194. ~~~~~~~~~~
  195. - if you have corrupted disks, get replacements from the one
  196.     you got them from
  197. - if you get stuck
  198.   - REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM FROM YOUR ORIGINAL DOS DISK IN DRIVE A
  199.     AND RETRY INSTALLATION
  200.   - TRY INSTALLING ON SOMEONE ELSE'S MACHINE
  201.         BEFORE CALLING ANYONE
  202. - if you are still stuck, ask friend for help who knows about DOS
  203. - if you are still stuck, call your distributor
  204. - if he is stumped, write or call

  219.                       TWO important rules...

  223.                   1. Press "RETRY" up to 50 times if you
  224.                      get a "DATA ERROR" while installing.
  225.                      Sometimes opening and closing the drive
  226.                      latch and reinserting the disk fixes the
  227.                      problem.
  228.  
  229.                   2. If INSTALL fails mysterously, redo
  230.                      eliminating ANY program, device,
  231.                      menu, shell, RAM disk or file manager
  232.                      from memory.  ONLY DOS in memory. It's
  233.                      BEST to REBOOT from A: Drive using
  234.                      a plain DOS system disk.
